1. TASK 8 - Audience Profile and Focus Groups
Stereotypical Audience of R’N’BProfile

appeals to a stereotypical female audience as they are known to relate to
written expression such as notes, poems, letters.

live performances from the 60’s onwards: James Brown
Dress Sense Glamorous in an evening out sense, convey beauty through their image and
lyrics. Originally very respectable clothing back in the 60’s in
suits and long expensive clothing. Recently
more provocative clothing due to a
developing material based image,

Men topless attract young girls,
women little clothing audience for
men more desirable, tall heels, fresh
haircuts, creative, modest or bold makeup,
shows power, all of which induce sex
appeal. Simple jewellery to suggest class such as a watch, earing, necklace
whereas hip-hop is cluttered with diamond chains etc...
Why they listen to R&B Relatable music, usually a narrative it conveys situations
relevant to the audience. Visually, R&B artists look appealing and desirable
and which goes hand in hand with the lyrics which are relatable and so spurs the
2. audience into believing they’re on mutual levels. Feels familiar as the soulful
roots are likely to have been what their parents would’ve listened too.
My Target Audience
General Background
Name Grace Williams
Age 16
Ethnicity Black British
Educational Status College student, Year 13
Interests Music such as R’n’B due to the moving lyrics, soulful beats and often mellow
tempo. Enjoy hip-hop music also due to the heavier beats, the cultural aspects.
When and Why I listen to music when I am travelling to college or other destinations with my
headphones in as I can concentrate on the rhythm or the vocals of a song. I
also listen at home on an iPod dock so I can listen and move around freely
through my house and have it as a low accompaniment. I also listen when I am
at dance rehearsals where I have the opportunity to move with the music or
create something to the music resulting in a greater enjoyment of this genre. I
also go to concerts and so have the opportunity to listen to music live and
appreciate all the components of a typical song.
What would you like to see? Strong images close up of R&B artists’ faces, long
shot of their whole image promoting new albums, personal and relatable
interviews, information, and fashion current events concerning R&B
3. OVERALL SUMMARY OF YOUR RESULTS
MY TARGET AUDIENCE WOULD LIKE:
From my research I have concluded that the general public want on their magazine cover several images alongside a
strong main image. This suggests to me that I need to direct my audience to younger generations as they have a short
attention span and having more than one image that appeals to them. The most votes went to the several imagesont he
front cover, next was the use of bright colours. My audience want bright colours for an R&B magazine thast will uplift
them and look appealing to the eye.
THE MAGAZINE COVER PREFERRED FROM MY RESEARCH:
Mid Shot image of a female showing strength and power within the music industry, the colour will
be bright (most likely red) and the background will be simple however I will have names of artists
in the background in grey capitalise font to further enhance the genre of R’n’B.
THE MAIN ARTISTS I NEED TO REFER TO ON THE COVER SHOULD BE:
-Beyoncé, Mary J Blidge, Frank Ocean Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Alicia Keys, John Legend, R Kelly.
AUDIENCE WOULD LIKE STYLE OF MAGAZINE TO BE:
• A lot of colour and several images, that is bright in colour.
• Mainly images with chunks of text
• Strong dominant main image
IMAGES PREFERRED:
• Bright images are preferred to dark ones
• Several images are wanted so I shall put a variety on the cover
COST OF MAGAZINE
4. • Audience would pay between £1-£3.00
SUMMARY
After handing out questionnaires to ten different people both male and female aged 16-17 I have found that they
would prefer an R&B magazine to include the most notorious and well-known artists such as Trey Songz, Chris
Brown, Beyoncé as well as not so known / up and coming artists’ such as Miguel, Marsha Ambrosius, or Frank
Ocean. They would prefer the magazine to be highly focused around personal and relatable aspects of R&B
such as interviews, gossip and interactive features such as fashion trends. They would also enjoy reading
information about upcoming gigs. My research tells me that their attraction to the genre is because of the lyrics
of a typical R&B song. The lyrics are generally based on love and loss and heartbreak, usually narrative and so
are significant to a regular listener. I will try to apply this style of language to my text within the magazine, to
create an associated vibe with the readers. They would generally pay from £1-£3 for a magazine, and so I will
price it accordingly. A cheap price is one of the factors researchers said encouraged them to buy a music
magazine, as well as this exclusives, interesting insights into the genre they like that is only limited to a certain
magazine or one issue. The layout is a major part and must not be too cluttered as well.
