Into of who I am. how i became interested in this. 2nd part of preso last year.
1st thing to ask is...why free? what makes you want to look at free tools? we all know why we're looking at free. even before budget crisis libraries didn't always get funding
well why not? what stops us from trying new things? i know we don't fix things unless they are broken, but why not look at how to improve things
perhaps its easier...perhaps it isn't
2nd thing to do, figure out the questions you need to ask before you start looking. it sounds obvious, but its really an important step
again this sounds obvious, but ask yourself what is it you need out of the tool. for example looking for a photo tool are you just looking for a simple crop tool or a complex image editing tool? these are two very different things
This is the 2nd part of the 1st question, what do you need it to be able to do? does it need to convert in certain formats, does it need to have to be free, does it have to work with just macs?
some new for the sake of being new explore what's out there. what's new, perhaps it simplifies the process, offers more, makes it easier to do, it improves efficiency
