4. THE EVIDENCE
Parents who take on a supportive role in their
child’s learning make a difference in improving
achievement and behaviour (Education
Scotland)
Of all the intervention types studied ‘parental
involvement in their child’s learning’ was the only
area with sufficient evidence to suggest a causal
model for impact on pupil attainment (Gorard et
al., 2012)
5. PARENTS’ EXPERIENCE
Teachers and parents have to work alongside each other. Education
doesn't stop when a child leaves the school building. I need to be
aware of my children's needs so that I can boost their development
(Mother, Greece)
It (being involved in school) allows parents to learn about child's
progress, be part of the school life and your child can see that you
are interested and involved (Mother, Poland)
My son loves it when he sees me at assemblies (Mother, Pakistan)
9. OTHER IDEAS
• Always go to parents’ evening
• Attend events at school
• Ask your child about their day
• Join a library
• If there are problems speak to the teacher
10. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ACT
“Parents have the opportunity to express
their views and have these taken into
account on matters affecting the education
of their children, the school’s arrangements
for promoting parental involvement and
other matters or issues of interest to
parents”
12. WHAT IS A PARENT COUNCIL?
• The committee appointed by the parents in the school to run
matters on its behalf
• A Parent Council is not run by the school or the local authority
but by the parents in the school
• The local authority should support a Parent Council both
financially and through advice/support
13. WHAT CAN A PARENT COUNCIL DO?
• Help to improve links between all parents, school and
local authority
• Report to parents on a regular basis
• Discuss issues of interest to parents including school
policies
• Helps parent to be engaged with their child’s education
• Represent parents’ views to the local authority and
others
14. WHAT CAN A PARENT COUNCIL DO?
• Make sure parents get information in an accessible way
• Become involved in the recruitment of new head teachers and
senior staff
• Take an important role during and after a school inspection
• Organise social and fundraising activities

This presentation looks at what parental involvement means- why it is important for parents to be involved in their children’s learning and school and some ideas for how parents can support their children at home. It also gives a over view of the role of the Parent Council in being a voice for parents in the school
Overview of what involvement is (all involvement is helpful, it shows children that you believe that school is important and you care about them doing well)
In school- attending formal meetings with school, helping school with events, coming along to school activities and performances
Out of school- reading info from school, helping with homework, reading together, asking about their day
What do you do?
Discuss in pairs and feedback to the room, write up the activities that the parents do
Help parents see that they are already involved and helping their children learning
Why it’s important-
Lots of research to show that when parents take an active role in supporting their children the children do better- this can help overcome challenges like poverty, home background etc.
And this is why parents think it’s important
Parents and school need to work together, supporting their children’s learning
Children can see that their parents take an interest- shows that school is important to them
Seeing parents coming to school events gives children confidence, feeling of belonging
Speak to the teacher- any problems, things you aren’t sure about please try speaking to teacher, you can bring a friend along to translate if it’s just a simple question or request a meeting and interpreter for a bigger problem. Let the school know before things become bigger problems
Use home language- the better children are in their first language the easier it is for them to learn a second language.
Activity for younger children- still learning to use pencil, important to help them get used to using their hands and recognising the shapes of letters.
With playdough make your name
(fun activity to do with your child- older children will enjoy it too)
In secondary school children are expected to be able to be more independent and in control of their learning, however it is still important parents are involved
Know when things are happening- My World of Work website has section for parents so know what time of year children need to make subject choices, meeting with career advisor (parents can attend these too), when applications to college and university need to be made etc. Speak to your child about the events and find out if you can help
Making choices- children need to choose what subjects they will take for nationals, highers etc, where to go after school. Find out information and speak to your child about the choices they are going to make, make sure they are thinking carefully about the decisions as these can affect the rest of their lives
Parent evening- you can ask for interpreter, think of questions to ask beforehand
Coming to events means a lot to children, try to attend one
Libraries have lots of resources including homework groups, story time, computers, magazines etc

2006- Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act. This recognises how important parental involvement is and put duties on the school to think about how to involve parents, consult their views and support them to be involved in their children’s learning.
Parents have a right to have their views heard- in small groups think about your child's school and what you would like changed about it
Share back with the group
Parent Councils are the group of parents at the school who represent the voice of all the parents in the school- they can raise concerns with the school and work for change
Parent Councils are all volunteers- if no one volunteers there will not be a parent council.
Normally there will be an meeting every year where the parent council tells all parents about the work they have done and new members are elected. Any parent with a child at the school can join.
Parent Councils are often consulted by the local authority on issues such as improvements to the school building, how best to spend the education budget and the Curriculum (many parent councils were involved in developing the Curriculum for Excellence)
Need to meet with the parent forum (all the parents at the school) at least once a year to share what they have been doing- many PCs will have regular newsletters, facebook updates, coffee mornings etc.
PCs have input into anti-bullying policies, uniform etc
Highlight to the school areas that parents need support with eg. if school information is difficult to understand
PCs need to be trained before they can join the interview panel but can have a big influence on choosing at new head teacher or deputy head.
In school inspections the way that schools involve parents will be looked at and Parent Councils can help the school find ways of improving this.
After going over the role of the PC look back at the “wish list”- what could the parent council do/ influence?
