3. INTRODUCTION
What is a Military Strike???
Military Strikes are a group of military operations that aims an attack to
damage or destroy an objective or a capability and comes under the
formal umbrella of military operations other than war (MOOTW).
4. Types of Military Strike
A covert operation is something that is done without an open declaration.
This could be anything from espionage, to abduction of enemy to killing
an enemy and destroying an enemy target.
A surgical strike, is a much like a surgery, - you intrude into an exact
enemy territory, you complete an operation ( which is not passive like
espionage , but active like killing of enemy/ destroying targets etc )
without affecting the non target area.
5. Contd..
Like the killing of Osama, was a surgical strike, you penetrate through the
border and kill and abduct the enemy, without warning anyone.
This is unlike a war where you do ho halla, and may be stopped at the border
itself.
6. WHAT IS SURGICAL STRIKE????
Surgical strike is a pre-emptive military attack on a specific target
with an aim to neutralize the enemy with minimum or no collateral
damage to surrounding structures, vehicles, buildings, or the
general public infrastructure and utilities.
7. Contd…
Neutralization of targets with surgical strikes also prevents escalation to a
full blown war. Surgical strike attacks can be carried out via air strike,
airdropping special ops teams or a swift ground operation or by sending
special troops.
Precision bombing is another example of a surgical strike carried out by
aircraft precision bombing which refers to the attempted aerial bombing
of a target with some degree of accuracy, with the aim of limiting collateral
damage
8. How is it carried out?
It is primarily conducted in three ways:
Air strikes: The most convenient and safe way to
conduct a surgical strike is through dropping
missiles or air strikes.
9. Contd….
Example-
During the First and Second Persian Gulf wars in 1991 and 2003,
respectively, by the US and its Nato allies. The US also used it against the
Taliban in 2001 in Afghanistan and on numerous other occasions. Washington
and its Nato allies perhaps lead the world in the use of surgical strikes to
achieve their strategic and military objectives. That said, such operations
require a vastly superior air power and domination, as demonstrated by the
US time and again.
10. Contd…
Airdropping teams: The second way
is airdropping special operations
teams, like during the Indian Army’s
operations against the Naga militants
in Myanmar, reported The Hindustan
Times, when a crack team of elite
commandos crossed into the
Myanmar border and killed 38
insurgents within 40 minutes.
12. Contd…
Precision bombing: A third way is precision bombing of enemy targets as
employed by Israel against terrorists operating from Palestinian territories.
It is different from air strikes or carpet bombing where there is a much
larger impact and destruction of the area, as described by the Gulf News .
13. The Final Strike
Preparation: The collection of actionable
intelligence is essential to any surgical strike,
and makes all the difference in the final
outcome of such operations. The success or
failure of such operations, especially ground
operations teams, depends entirely on on-
field intelligence. The US collected
intelligence and analysed it for months
before striking the house where Laden was
hiding in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
14. Contd…
Capabilities: Ultimately, everything comes down to delivery on the
ground, which depends on the capabilities of countries using surgical
strikes as an option. Most countries keep the information on their special
operations teams and capabilities secret for obvious reasons.
15. Major requirements for carrying out
Surgical Strike
Accurate and credible intelligence is the most important element
required while planning and executing a surgical strike. The military’s
special operations units work very closely with the Intelligence Bureau,
the Research & Analysis Wing, military intelligence services and deep
assets that the country has within the enemy nation to get all the
information related to the targets, etc.
Such Special Operations are very complex and are very carefully planned
and coordinated.
16. Major Surgical Strikes
1. INDIAN ARMY OPERATION IN
MYANMAR
In June 2015, a team of some 70 Indian Army
commandos carried out surgical strike inside the
jungles of Myanmar. The 40-minute operation took
out 38 dreaded Naga militants and left seven
injured.
The strike was planned hours after the Naga
militants killed 18 soldiers in an ambush in Chandel
area of Manipur on June 4, 2015
17. 2. OSAMA BIN LADEN'S
ASSASSINATION, PAKISTAN
In May 2011, the US special forces attacked an ISI
safe house in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where al-
Qaida chief Osama bin Laden was hiding, taking
him out in a contained attack.
In the CIA-led operation, code-named as
Operation Neptune Spear (also Operation
Geronimo), was carried out by the US Navy
18. The surgical operation that Indian Army conducted
covered eight locations up to two km across the LOC.
It started around 2.30 am (IST) on Thursday and
continued till 8 am (IST) on Thursday on 29
September 2016.
The operation began with Indian forces firing artillery
across the frontier to provide cover for three to four
teams of 70-80 commandos from 4 and 9 Para
(Special Forces) to cross the LoC over at several
separate points shortly after midnight IST on 29
September.
