1. This illustration of the classic
“Simon” game caught my attention
almost immediately and sparked a
bit of nostalgia upon viewing it. I
was reminded of the fun and
frustration of trying to keep up with
the sequence of lights and sounds as
each successfully completed cycle of
button-mashing awarded me with an
even longer and often faster series of
lights and sounds to match in the
never ending pursuit of the elusive
high score.

2. This series of flags constructed of
Lego bricks harkens to a favored
past-time of many children and
catered to their imaginations
allowing them to create virtually
anything they wanted. Upon
viewing, I reminisced not only of the
time spent playing with the bricks as
a kid but also of a bit of patriotism.

3. This print was interesting to me
because of the idea of self-gifting (as
indicated by the title) around the
Christmas shopping season. Guilty
of this trend myself, I’m reminded of
the satisfaction of finding that
special item that I’ve been wanting
at a good price. Crossing the
threshold into adulthood and
fending for myself, there’s a bit of
self-centered gratification in buying
that special item that is less likely to
be received.

4. This set of paintings reminds me
a bit of my own childhood,
exploring in the backyard and
marveling at the changes that
the seasons bring. For some
adults, myself included this sense
of child-like wonder in the isn’t
lost. Understanding that the
paintings of the exhibit are
spaces in her parents and
grandparents home, a feeling of
familiarity is transferred upon
viewing, as if I have been to the
actual space and I am reminded
of the garden behind my
grandmother’s home as I
remember from my childhood.

5. Much like the previous two, this
painting also reminds me of a
room in my grandmother’s home,
from the painted lamp, to the
porcelain plates mounted on the
walls, and the arrangements of
the paintings behind the couch. If
you were to change the wall color
to a golden floral – print
wallpaper and it was my
grandmother’s living room. The
fond memories of my time spent
with my grandmother has a
powerful effect on my
appreciation of this painting,
making it an instant favorite.
