In addition to this, delivery channels of IoT (devices/sensors) are required to connect with existing backend systems and service platforms to pull and push events. Therefore, IoT architecture requires an unified manner of handling this situation. APIs, enable extensibility of business operations in internal, external and partner networks. The capability of APIs is such that it can be used to bridge the new IoT world and SOA, EDA, also legacy systems that exists in the enterprises. Patterns are the universal language of architects to communicate, refer, implement and improve. Architecture patterns from traditional SOA (service-oriented architecture) to ROA (resource-oriented architecture) and today to MSA (microservice architecture) drive most enterprise architectures today. Subpatterns such as EDA (event driven architecture) and WOA (web oriented architecture) also has a lot of traction today. Event Streaming with Apache Kafka plays a massive role in processing massive volumes of data in real-time in a reliable, scalable, and flexible way integrating with various legacy and modern data sources and sinks. In this presentation, I want to give you an overview of existing use cases for event streaming technology in a connected world across supply chains, industries and customer experiences that come along with these interdisciplinary data intersections: • The Automotive Industry (and it’s not only Connected Cars) • Mobility Services across verticals (transportation, logistics, travel industry, retailing, …) • Smart Cities (including citizen health services, communication infrastructure, …) All these industries and sectors do not have new characteristics and requirements. They require data integration, data correlation or real decoupling, just to name a few, but are now facing massively increased volumes of data. Microservices are a well-established architecture applied by many organizations around the world to build scalable and fault-tolerant backend systems. But as these systems grow so does the number of services in them. And this brings many challenges when we want to introduce new functionality. For a simple feature, engineers may need to spend a lot of time designing the end to end flow, changing code in multiple services and setting up complex test scenarios. During this talk, we’ll explore how to evolve a microservice architecture to be easily extensible based on some lessons learned from running 5000 microservices in production. We’ll go over different architectural patterns and open source tools that we can use to make it easy for all engineers to understand, extend and be more and more productive in such big complex systems.

When service mesh was introduced as a concept, some thought this was the end of APIs - a few even said: "API Management is Dead". However, it was fiction, and the reality is that APIs are a crucial attribute of modern digital enterprises. Mesh architecture is fueling distributed patterns like microservices and Web 3.0. As a result, sub-patterns such as data, event, and identity mesh are added to the catalog. At the same time, mesh implementations are improving by utilizing high-performance low-level protocols like eBPF. In this session, Asanka will deep-dive into the mesh architecture and look at the role of APIs from a digital craftsman's view.

As a result, people and things have an equal digital representation, which we call a digital double. APIs are the products of the 21st century. As we build out API systems, we find that we are constantly learning from product journeys. We propose a new kind of supply chain - the Integrated Supply Chain for APIs (ISCA) - which is needed by any organization looking to create and monetize API products, either directly or indirectly. In this session, Asanka will outline our vision of the ISCA, identify five key patterns for success, and give a blueprint for creating a digital business based on API products.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English.
