In this paper presented in study about the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation. Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation Limited was Incorporated during February 1998 and transport service is converted into Pondicherry Tourism and Transport Development Corporation Limited with effect from 1992. PT&TDC has paid up capital of about Rs.28.42 crores and was incurring substantial annual losses in the tourism sector. Hence , the corporation was bifurcated with effect from 1st April 2005 into the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation and Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation , in order to focus on diversification and expansion project. Bus service in modern days is a greater utility to the society in all ways and means. The education , employment , social commitment and business all depending on the extent of bus service. The extent of bus service prevailing in a particular r area, determine the economic and social wellbeing of the society. Though the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation service is more benefit to the public and its new Dimension of corporation Transportation Climate is useful l to the future plans of PRTC and its expansion is very useful to the public.

Efficient transportation with in a region reflects the social and economic advancement of
the region. Inadequate transportation facilities would slow down the place of economic
development

transportation has increased day by day. For speeding up the process of socio – economic
transformation , transportation service occupying a place of outstanding significance . Of
late, this sector is considered to be a de- factor barometer of the national economy. It has also
been successful in transforming the globe into a village.

Development of Road Transport
In the Road Transport Sector , the ministry is responsible for Motor Vehicle
legislation, of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and taxation of motor vehicle, compulsory
insurance of motor vehicles, administration of the Road Transport Corporations Act,
1950, and promotion of Transport co-operatives in the field of motor transport . The
Ministry also evolves road safety standards in the form of a National Policy on Road
Safety and by preparing and implementing the annual Road Safety Plan. It collects,
compiles and analyses road accident statistics and takes steps for developing a Road
Safety Culture in the country by involving the members of public and organizing
various awareness campaigns. To this end, it provides grants – in – aid to Non-
Governmental Organizations in accordance with the fixed guidelines .
Puducherry Road Transport Corporation and Incorporation
Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation Limited (PTDC) was
incorporated during February 1998 and transport service is converted into Pondicherry
Tourism and Transport Development Corporation Limited (PT&TDC) with effect from
1992. The corporation operates inter-state buses on 55 routes throughout the territory,
providing direct services to important tourist destinations in all the southern states of
India. PT&TDC has paid up capital of about Rs.28.42 crores and was incurring
substantial annual losses in the tourism sector . Hence , the corporation was bifurcated
with effect from 1st
April 2005 into the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC)
and Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) , in order to focus on
diversification and expansion projects.
Functions
PRTC operates over 100 buses in various Inter – state and Intra – City routes. It
operates around 40 JnNURM buses in all the 4 territories, viz Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe
and Yanam, with a majority of them operating in Puducherry. The fleet with PRTC is entirely
from Ashok Leyland.
It operates various inter-state routes, connecting important cities of Tamil Nadu like
Chennai, Coimbatore, Tirunelvdeli, Nagercoil, Velankanni, Nagapattinam, Neyveli,
Chidambaram, Villupuram from its towns of Puducherry and Karaikal. It also operates to
Mahe, Tirupathi, Bangalore from Puducherry, which till date, are its only services outside
TamilNadu. Off late, they have been adding more and more services in Mahe and Yanam. As
of now, they are operating 3JnNURM town buses, each Mahe and Yanam. PRTC is running
the following types of buses, connecting different places in its 4 regions as well as to the
neighboring states
 City Ordidnary -2*2 Cidfty bus and 3*3 City bus
 City Semy Low Floor – 2*2 JnNURM bus
 Express – 3*2 Mofussel Bus
 Delux – 2*2 Non – Push Back
 Ultra Delux – 2*2 - Push Back

Statement of Problems
Bus service in modern days is of greater utility to the society in all ways and
means. The education, employment, social commitment and business all depending on
the extent of bus service. The extent of bus service prevailing in a particular area,
determines the economic and social wellbeing of the society, Puducherry Road
Transport Corporation Ltd., is one of the public funds. So that public transport
corporation has a great responsibility to serve the public , effectively and efficiently.
General Conclusion
Though the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation service is more benefit to the
public and its New Dimension of Corporation Transportation Climate is useful to the future
plans of PRTC and its expansion is very useful to the public.
