The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie is the world's first hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of koalas, and features a treatment room, intensive care units, and recovery yards. As many as 250 sick and injured koalas get treated at the hospital every year before being released back into the wild, relying on the support of hundreds of local and international volunteers. At the heart of the hospital’s fundraising efforts is the Adopt A Wild Koala Program. People from all over the world donate between $40 to $50 per annum toward the programme to help nurse a Koala back to full health and learn about its progress through-out the year. In turn, the funds are used to keep the hospital operating at a cost of at least $140,000 per year. Since 2005, the hospital has been offering PayPal as the preferred method of payment for the Adopt A Wild Koala Program as well as for making one-off donations via its web homepage. As thousands of people from all over the world support the hospital’s fundraising efforts every year, they need a secure and convenient way to donate money online. “ PayPal is a trusted global brand that gives our supporters a simple way to make donations online, regardless of where they live,” said Bob Sharpham, President, Koala Preservation Society of NSW Inc. “We may be a local organisation, but we have an international base of supporters and need to make it as easy and secure as possible for them to donate money to our cause. Even though we still offer mail order, cheque and cash payments, we receive the majority of funds online via PayPal because it is convenient and easy to use.” In the last year alone, the Koala Hospital raised more than AU$100,000 using PayPal’s secure online payment system.
