Evaluation for Bandai Namco
By Arran Spencer
What initial research was conducted?
Initial research was conducted when I had to look into what the most famous games which was created by Bandai was
and the games involved some Dragonball Z games and games like Dark souls 1,2 and of course the classic Pac-man.
There was other research done to the website like i had to find out when the merge between Bandai games and Namco
Hometek which was only a few years ago. Other research was done in the creating of the business cards like when i
had to find out who the CEO was and the contact info for bandai namco like the phone number and the e-mail. There
was initial research which involved a focus group and some web browsing to learn the information i need.
How successful was this?
The research was very successful since it gave me some useful information to use to help rebrand the company. I was
able to learn things like who the target demographic and what I could do to the company without ruining the
demographic for Bandai Namco. This meant i could look at what people thought of the company and anyone who did
know what the company was they interpreted the company with games. So i took that into account when i was
tampering with the company logo and business cards. This was very successful and helped a lot with the slow
development of the logos and business cards.
What data did you gather from this? , and
how did this help?
As I explained on the previous slide doing this research into the company gave me an insight on what people thought
of the company and what the mascot for the company which was of course Pac-man since it was their big
breakthrough into the gaming world. This made me have an idea of incorporating pacman and the 4 ghosts into near
enough all my rough designs in my logo, business cards and the websites. With doing this idea it meant that the logos
etc would be bright even though the original logo was very bright as well but I incorporated more bright colours for
example i involved all the 4 colours of the ghosts then of course yellow for pac-man then orange since that was original
colour scheme.
How effective was the pre-production?
The pre-production was quite effective in the way it helped me learn some more figures about the company. I learnt
facts about what year the joining of the company's happened. I learnt some of the most famous games developed by
the company so this helped with the facts and figures. I did a fair bit of pre-production i did a focus group to get what
people thought of the original logo and to get any ideas of what i can add to it to improve. I got some mixed response
with some people saying get rid of the colour bubble in the background of the original logo and then others saying to
change it up but to keep the colour scheme part of the logo which i did to an extent. The pre-production could also be
classed as the research we undertook to find out more information about the company and if this is the case it was
very effective since i found the information I used on the business cards and Letterheads.
How did i respond to this feedback given
I responded to the feedback by taking in some of the feedback in some forms like when people said it might be better
to change the font of the text in the middle of the logo. there was like 2 people out of 18 people who wanted the colour
changed but i had to go for the unanimous vote and i kept the colour scheme similar since that was the most
recognised thing about the company was when you would load up their games and you would see their colourful logo
come up for like 3 seconds i tried to keep to the same colour scheme so that people would get the same effect when it
came up when loading games up on your consoles. I responded positively since there was no negative feedback apart
from things like “Try a different font” or “Move text it’s hard to read” this feedback was the main points that got raised
to me.
What skills have I developed throughout this
unit.
The skills I developed in the unit have been minimal but I did learn a great lot about Photoshop mainly how to use the
pen tool to trace images onto the Photoshop document. This became a crucial skill in my logos and business cards
since I had to trace the Pac-man ghosts into the images. I learnt how to use layers and brush tool together so that you
can use the brush to colour in certain images and shapes you have put in or imported this tool was used to colour in
the ghosts in the 4 colours, the main trouble was not missing a spot inside the shape. I have developed skills which
have been explained on the images on LO2
What does my final design “Communicate”?
My final design communicates with the company nicely. Since my logo was taking from their best selling and most
famous game Pac-man it communicates the company nicely since Bandai Namco are a games company. The use of
Pac-man is also universal since it is one of the highest selling and most famous games globally. People around the
world would of heard or even played Pac-man. This will communicate nicely with Bandai Namco because the gaming
company is best known for games like DBZ and Pac-man. My final design will relate to old school gamers because
most people who are old enough to know what and who Pac-man is have also played his games. Since Bandai Namco
have made the “Dark Souls” which is a 16+ Most people of that age range would know who Pac-man is.
Does your design fit or meet the original
intentions.
My original design for my logo was nowhere close to the one I ended up with at the end. I had no idea I was going to
incorporate Pac-man into the final design. The idea to have Pac-man and the ghosts involved in the Logo and business
cards was given to me by my media teacher. I had a little idea in my head to involve the games that was made famous
by Bandai Namco but it completely crossed my mind that Pac-man was made by Bandai so as soon as my teacher
pointed it out I added Pac-man and the ghosts straight into my logo designs I then incorporated the ideas into the
business cards and the Letterheads. My final design does fit the original intentions in some ways since my intention
was to link the logo to a game that Bandai Namco did release but i didn’t remember that Bandai made Pac-man.
How appropriate is it to the target audience
The target audience has not change through the Company getting remodelled. The target demographic has already
been around the ages of 12+ people of younger ages are allowed to like Bandai but stereotypically the age range for
gamers and predominantly is 12-18 year olds. The target audience is still the same as it was before the company
underwent the rebranding. The target audience will always be around the age range that play their games. This can be
difficult since they made a game that is a 3+ which is Pacman they have also made a few 12+ games like Dragonball Z
but also made some 16+ games like Dark Souls. So this company has a giant target audience theyw ill need to know
what games are appropriate for them and which of those are not.
How effective is the final design?
The final design is effective in the way it relates more to the company than the original logo. The original logo I believe
had a nice colour scheme I personally thought that the colours used and the way they blended together was really nice.
The only downfall is that it doesn’t help show the Company. My final design I have gone with shows more of the
company than the original logo. When I did my Focus Group for the original logo lots of people said and I quote “ The
colours are off putting” so I took that into account and changed some of the things about the Logo. I used certain
colours and I didn’t overlap the colours. The logo is very effective in the idea that is makes people remember that
Bandai Namco is a games company.
Comparing a different company's rebranding.
I have chosen to speak about the pepsi rebranding over the last 117
years. The original logo looks very weird but since 1950 they have
kept with the colour scheme. They tampered a bit with some
designs but the 1991 logo looks weird and it makes sense to why it
got changed again 1 year later. I followed the same type process
when rebranding, I changed the colours and the font. Pepsi did so
something with a bottle cap which looks nice but it looks more old
fashioned. That wouldn’t of been a problem in 1950 since that is lie
65 years ago. They also changed the fonts after a while they left the
curly text and made the text more bold and noticable.
