ARIS STATHIS
ARIS STATHIS
I was born in Athens in April 1983 and grew
up in a middle class neighborhood of the city.
Even though during my school years I was not
much into studying, since my interests rather
focused on music and other creative activi-
ties, I succeeded in graduating from a techni-
cal school with a Graphic Design orientation.
Following the directions given by some of
my teachers, I followed the Industrial Design
courses of Technological Institute of Kozani
were I gained engineering background and
fell in love with Design.
By the end of my studies I moved to Thessa-
loniki, Greece, in search for new professional
and personal experiences. During the first six
years of my stay I was employed by various
companies; from furniture to urban equip-
ment and from playground toys to metal
constructions and dental equipment. During
my employment I also worked on personal
projects with my main focus concentrating
on furniture and gadget design. The first
international recognition of my work came
through the international Industrial bench
design competition Athens Benchmark. By
winning the first prize I not only had the
opportunity to produce a small quantity of
benches and have them installed in the center
of Athens, but also to promote myself in the
Greek press. Apart from that, I have also been
included in articles by some international
Industrial Design blogs and magazines, the
most important of which was the annual
Design and Design book.
By the end of the summer of 2011 I moved
from Thessaloniki to Utrecht, Netherlands,
making, for one more time, a brand new
start, aiming at new employment opportuni-
ties, studies, and interaction with interesting
people.

//MODU
Modular mobile phone
Modu is a mobile phone with modular features both in
software and hardware. Software like other third genera-
tion phones can be modified according to the user’s needs,
however the main feature that makes Modu special is the
hardware upgrade and modification system. The three part
body consists of the coated aluminum base, the LCD screen
and the main mechanism. All parts can be upgraded or modi-
fied according to the user’s needs.
If we are talking about concept, the idea of a mobile phone
with updated hardware looks pretty much as the ideal solu-
tion to slow down a little bit the huge production of devices
year after year. However what is more important to the
fulfillment of such a project is the engineering study and the
technology companies are willing to launch.
Hardware upgrade is usually the main reason for someone to
change his mobile phone. If companies slow down their “every
six months a new model” policy and focus in functionality and
upgrade of current models then we definitely can talk about a
true sustainable new era in the consumer electronics market
ARAMIS
Electric Voodo
Since I began playing music (somewhere in
my adolescence) my dream was someday to
make my own electric bass. Years after that
my dream remained the same and finally re-
alised. Aramis is a high end electric bass with
strong focus on material and parts quality.
The aesthetics are a mix of 60’s/70’s classic
designs in a more contemporary approach.
SPECS:
Body: Mahogany and flame maple top.
Neck: Quarter saw maple with walnut strips.
Freatboard: Ebony with pearl Gibson style
blocks.
Gotoh high quality tuners.
Ebony/maple headstock top with waterprint
logo.
Steambended flame maple top.
TV Jones® oldschool pick-ups.
Babicz® CAM bridge.
CLEAN CAT
Sandpot for cats
Pets have always been part of millions of familiesa-
round the world. Cats are one of the most common
choice; they are cute, independent and really
beautiful. Clean Cat is a sand pot with a strong and
dynamicshape with great focus on the problems
usually cat owners face.
With common sand pots cats fill the whole floor
withsand while scratching it. As a result apart from
changing the sand, cat ownersalso have to clean the
area around. On the upper side of Clean Cat there
is a curved lip whichhelps to keep sand inside the
pot. Moreover the basic pot can be removed like
adrawer and be cleaned separately.
MYBENCH.GR
Interactive bench
Usually very common habit of young people when theysit
on a new clean bench is to write down a message or draw
something on it. Mygoal was to transform that culture in
something fresh and contemporary. Mybench.gr imple-
ments traditional aesthetics -througha modern view- with
interactive technology. Every bench has a data matrix
onboth sides which links users on a forum-like web page
where they can post theirmessage, upload photos or
even chat with other users. This way every benchacquires
its own history. At the back of mybench.gr, between the
metal legs laysa 5 place bicycle stand. This way the prod-
uct encourages people of Athens touse their bikes more.
EXAMPLE 01
A young couple gives teir first kiss on one of thesebench-
es. They can link on the web page, write their message
(ALEX: Maria I loveyou so much!!!!!!! MARIA:
Me too!!!!!!!!!) or even upload a photo of them.
EXAMPLE 02
A group of young boys have a meeting point in a par-
kand they got “their” bench. They link on the web page,
they posttheir message (BEASTIE BOYS RULZZZZZZZZ)
and they upload a photo of them.
EXAMPLE 03
A middle aged lady goes every evening in a park nextto
her house for a walk with her dog. She is sitting on the
bench and watchingher dog playing with others.
Suddenly her dog starts
chasing a cat.
She losesher
dog. She can
link in the web
page, write her
message (Mrs.
PALOUSI: Today
Ilost my dog in the park.
If anyone can help please
sent me an e-mail...) and even
upload a photo of her dog.
Mybench consists of the fol-
lowing parts: The sitting-
system made of wooden
blocks, the metal legs
and the metal bicycle
stand. Allmetal elements
are made of standard parts
(DIN pipes, hollow structural sectionHSS etc) and the
rear part with the flower design is made of metal leafs
t=20mm cut with laser cutting machine. The use of
standard elements gives limit the cost ofproduction
while the absence of molded parts and the supply of
raw materialsfrom local suppliers decrease the carbon
footprint of the product.
FLEXISHELF
S(h)elf system
for modular bookcase
My intention was to design something simple
andfunctional. Flexishelf has not only a simple
form that leads tothe basic idea of a system of
shelves (very familiar to most of us) but alsohas
a unique functionality based on the need for
easier way of assembly. The key rule is to plug
the steel bases and thenadjust the shelves later
manually.
Another key function is the die-cut letter, met-
albookstop.Users can interact with the product
and form to thefinal result, a result made by
them for them.
The basic surface is made of plywood elements.
The plywood elements are hanging from three
steelnickel bars with the use of PVC coated
metal wires.Every steel bar is plugged on the
wall with the use ofbolts. In every plywood shelf
a metal book-stop with adie-cut symbol or letter
in the middle, is joint in either side. With the
die-cut book-stops users can choose lettersand
create their own message.
SINE CASE
One piece CD case
I wanted to create a cd case that can be easily
manufactured with plexiglass or other plastic.
The basic shape for this cd case was inspired
when observing an “s” curve.
The way that it is manufactured is a sheet of
plexiglass is processed through a bending ma-
chine which gives it this specific shape.
The folds that are created by the bending
machine are ideal for storing cds on both sides
of the case.
Plastic materials offer a big variety of colour
and texture that give the consumer a great
choice. The cd case can be placed both hori-
zontally and vertically.
+TUBU
Publi bench
“Mitosis is the cell reproduction phase by sepa-
ration of one cell in twonew ones.”
Following the aesthetic and logic of the mitosis
phases I created +TUBU,a visitor sitting system
for public spaces (ex. museums) for a short
durationof use. +TUBU consists of two different
modules whose repetition can give us awide
variety of solutions. The transpar-
ent appearance and the soft colors
of +TUBU foreground theplants. The
deep color of Iroko in combination
with the clean white of the main-
body and the green variations of the
plants communicate with the user and
themessage is simple: in the age of
speed take your time and relax, prefer-
simplicity and gentleness, leave your
footprint on the planet without being
theproblem. Create silently...
The two variations of the modules are
comprised of two different parts,the
basic body made of molded Corian
and the upper surface made of CNC
workedIroko. In both modules the upper sur-
face can be removed and the main body canbe
used as a flower-pot. Moreover an extra cylin-
drical flower-pot can be placedin the center
between the modules. This way both exterior
and interior spacecan be transformed into a
beautiful garden where the user can relax.
TABLE No1
Indoor vintage
Custom designed coffee table with steel coated
connectors, mahogany feet and clear glass surface.
The concept aims on a vintage look design that can
function well in a modern residence.
EXVO
Mobile phone
Exvo is a new promising company with focus
on mobile applications. This project was my
proposal for a touch screen mobile phone with
Exvo interface and applications. My concept
was to focus more on follow the current trends
of mobile industry than try to innovate. Due to
a market research that I made I came to the
conclusion that what makes mobile phones like
iPhone and Samsung Galaxy a success are the
plenty of choices that user has to personalize
his/her device.
My design was planned to be elegant with
simple lines. In order to make it pop out from
competition I added the colorful side with the
negative curve. The color selection can vary
from the combination of metallic black and
fresh green, like on the presentation, to red,
blue and perhaps a few special combinations
for limited edition model.
Simple shapes make it easier for potential cus-
tom creators to produce cases and peripher-
als. An open design policy that promotes the
users’ creativity, works as advertisement and
the actual product can easily grain reputation
through web platforms like Etsy.com or even
Kickstarter.
DANTSI
Indoor functionality
Indoor hammock with stainless steel frame and pat-
terned sitting and pillows. The focus in this concept
was to redefine the indoor furniture with added
functionality pillow.
