3. Introduction
• Manufacturing and Service companies spend a significant amount of
time and money to design or redesign their facilities. This is an
extremely important issue and must be addressed before products
are produced or services are rendered.
• A poor facility design can be costly and may result in:
• poor quality products,
• low employee morale,
• customer dissatisfaction.

4. Problem statement
A pen manufacturing firm wants to place its manufacturing setup /shop
floor in an allocated area of 40x40 ft. This firm has to meet on hand
demand of 2 million pens as its first order due in next month after
installation. There are two main categories of pen; ball point and
retractable pen. Total demand includes; .8 million ball points and 1.2
million retractable pens. Operating hours for the firm are 8 hrs/ shift
and there are two shifts a day, with two operators minimum required
on the shop floor. Total allotted budget including raw material and
machinery is 5 million PKR
