P!NK PRESENTATION Media Studies – Music Video Leon, Anthony, Arfa and Hannah
Performance, narrative, concept or combination? We’re going to make our version of “Who Knew” a performance/narrative video. The lyrics tell the story of how Pink was once provided stability by someone important to her but they have now left her- “if someone said three years from now you’d be long gone”. Most of her videos are performance/narrative therefore we wanted to continue with this style.
What concept, story or direction did you want to achieve? With “Who Knew” we wanted to achieve a music video that highlights the lyrics but does not make it literal. For example we did not want to literally show Pink talking to someone she loved about how they have helped her etc. We wanted to show the background story of the lyrics and show how certain events have led to the point where she’s sitting alone on the sofa in corset prom dress with mascara running down her face and watching her love leave her life.
How do our ideas sell/market our artist? The fact that Pink is wearing a corset prom dress with a single line of mascara running down her cheek highlights her vulnerability which sells her as an artist because her target audience would feel sympathy for her and perhaps relate their own experience to hers. However, the fact that it’s only one tear stops the audience from feeling too much sympathy for her.  Also, the corset prom dress highlights her rebellious, provocative and “kick ass” attitude. Also the fact that she’s smashing a frame at the end of the chorus reinforces her rebellious and sometimes controversial attitude.  This would sell Pink as she is know as being rebellious, controversial and “kick ass”.
How our music video matches the mood, expectations and interest of fans and new audiences. Pink is also known for exploring societal problems in her music videos for example in “Family Portrait” Pink highlights various problems families face. In “Who Knew”, Pink is exploring the idea of betrayal and loyalty. This further sells her image as she opens herself to new avenues of emotions which can broaden her fan base. Her style, emotional lyrics and rebellious image in the video allows her older and more familiar fans to still identify with her as her image is still the same however in order to attract new fans, we’ve decided for Pink to explore the background story of her lyrics in order for news fans to understand her as an artist.
How is our music video relevant to your research findings? From our research, we found that Pink is a “kick ass”, strong artist that shows a vulnerable side in her lyrics in order to be more dynamic and mainstream. The fact that Pink has the ability to explore different emotional avenues has helped us to create a dynamic music video that portrays her rebellious, “kick ass” yet vulnerable side through the use of costumes, props and candid lyrics. The next slide displays how we created visuals to match her lyrics in order to portray the background story and Pink’s pain.
Pink- “Who Knew” Lyrics Visuals 0.07 Music introduction You took my hand Setting the scene: Camera goes through a set of apartment doors to find Pink sitting on a big, luxurious sofa in a corset prom dress looking down with a single of mascara running down her left cheek. You showed me how You promised me you’d be around Over the shoulder shot of a man dressed in jeans and a band tee with a black suitcase walking out of the apartment doors that the camera just went through. Medium- dark lighting. Uh huh That’s right I took your words and I believed In a romantic- gothic looking bathroom you see Pink singing in the mirror to herself. In everything You said to me Yeah huh That’s right Flashback (blurred edges): to Pink and the guy that we saw leaving on the sofa throwing popcorn at each other smiling. Natural lighting. If someone said three years from now You’d be long gone I’d stand up and punch them out Cause they’re all wrong Pink in a crowd of people in suits and briefcases (dressed in black and grey) whilst she is wearing a brightly coloured provocative outfit, walking towards the camera singing the lyrics. Medium-dark lighting. Facial expressions: looking meaner as the lyrics progress. I know better Cause you said forever Back in the romantic- gothic bathroom singing to mirror. You can see the hurt and anger in her eyes. And ever Who knew … . On sofa and picks up the photo frame of the two of them next to her and throws it against the wall. CU of frame smashing on the floor in slow motion as it shatters- you can see the reflection of her face in the shattered fragments of glass.
