Injection of a small amounts of material into the
corium or substance of the skin, done in diagnostic
procedures and in administration of regional
anesthetics, as well as in treatment procedures. In
certain allergy tests, the allergens is injected
intradermally.

5. Precaution
•This is painful procedure and is used only with small
amounts of solution
•The nurse should ensure that the needle is inserted
into the epidermis, not subcutaneously, as
absorption would be reduced

9. PROCEDURE
• Check order
• Explain procedure
• Wash hands
• Prepare medication from ampoule/vial
• Assemble all articles
• Position pt locate site(inner aspect of fore arm, upper
aspect of chest, beneath scapula)
• Cleanse the site with alcohol swab in circular motion
moving outward.
• Allow skin to dry
• Keep cotton in the tray for reuse when taking out the
needle

• Remove needle cap with non dominant hand
• Use dominant hand to spread skin taut over injection site
• Place needle flat against patient skin(15 degree) and insert needle Into
the skin
• Insert needle only about 1/8 inch
• Slowly inject 0.01-0.1 ml watch for bleb/blister to develop if not present
with draw needle slightly and inject medication
• Do not massage
• Do not recap
• Remove gloves
• Draw a circle using blue/ black pen around injection site
