The work is about using Simulated Annealing Algorithm for the effort estimation model parameter optimization which can lead to the reduction in the difference in actual and estimated effort used in model development. The model has been tested using OOP’s dataset, obtained from NASA for research purpose.The data set based model equation parameters have been found that consists of two independent variables, viz. Lines of Code (LOC) along with one more attribute as a dependent variable related to software development effort (DE). The results have been compared with the earlier work done by the author on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and it has been observed that the developed SA based model is more capable to provide better estimation of software development effort than ANN and ANFIS

The traditional approach for solving the object recognition problem requires image representations to be first extracted and then fed to a learning model such as an SVM. These representations are handcrafted and heavily engineered by running the object image through a sequence of pipeline steps which requires a good prior knowledge of the problem domain in order to engineer these representations. Moreover, since the classification is done in a separate step, the resultant handcrafted representations are not tuned by the learning model which prevents it from learning complex representations that might would give it more discriminative power. However, in end-to-end deep learning models, image representations along with the classification decision boundary are all learnt directly from the raw data requiring no prior knowledge of the problem domain. These models deeply learn the object image representation hierarchically in multiple layers corresponding to multiple levels of abstraction resulting in representations that are more discriminative and give better results on challenging benchmarks. In contrast to the traditional handcrafted representations, the performance of deep representations improves with the introduction of more data, and more learning layers (more depth) and they perform well on large-scale machine learning problems. The purpose of this study is six fold: (1) review the literature of the pipeline processes used in the previous state-of-the-art codebook model approach for tackling the problem of generic object recognition, (2) Introduce several enhancements in the local feature extraction and normalization steps of the recognition pipeline, (3) compare the enhancements proposed to different encoding methods and contrast them to previous results, (4) experiment with current state-of-the-art deep model architectures used for object recognition, (5) compare between deep representations extracted from the deep learning model and shallow representations handcrafted through the recognition pipeline, and finally, (6) improve the results further by combining multiple different deep learning models into an ensemble and taking the maximum posterior probability.

"Optimization of patient throughput and wait time in emergency departments (ED) is an important task for hospital systems. For that reason, Emergency Severity Index (ESI) system for patient triage was introduced to help guide manual estimation of acuity levels, which is used by nurses to rank the patients and organize hospital resources. However, despite improvements that it brought to managing medical resources, such triage system greatly depends on nurse’s subjective judgment and is thus prone to human errors. Here, we propose a novel deep model based on the word attention mechanism designed for predicting a number of resources an ED patient would need. Our approach incorporates routinely available continuous and nominal (structured) data with medical text (unstructured) data, including patient’s chief complaint, past medical history, medication list, and nurse assessment collected for 338,500 ED visits over three years in a large urban hospital. Using both structured and unstructured data, the proposed approach achieves the AUC of 88% for the task of identifying resource intensive patients, and the accuracy of 44% for predicting exact category of number of resources, giving an estimated lift over nurses’ performance by 16% in accuracy. Furthermore, the attention mechanism of the proposed model provides interpretability by assigning attention scores for nurses’ notes which is crucial for decision making and implementation of such approaches in the real systems working on human health."

The automatic question answering (QA) task has long been considered a primary objective of artificial intelligence. Among the QA sub-systems, we focused on answer-ranking part. In particular, we investigated a novel neural network architecture with additional data clustering module to improve the performance in ranking answer candidates which are longer than a single sentence. This work can be used not only for the QA ranking task, but also to evaluate the relevance of next utterance with given dialogue generated from the dialogue model. In this talk, I'll present our research results (NAACL 2018), and also its potential use cases (i.e. fake news detection). Finally, I'll conclude by introducing some issues on previous research, and by introducing recent approach in academic.

In response, previous work combines decision trees with deep learning, yielding models that (1) sacrifice interpretability for accuracy or (2) sacrifice accuracy for interpretability. We forgo this dilemma by jointly improving accuracy and interpretability using Neural-Backed Decision Trees (NBDTs). NBDTs replace a neural network's final linear layer with a differentiable sequence of decisions and a surrogate loss. This forces the model to learn high-level concepts and lessens reliance on highly-uncertain decisions, yielding (1) accuracy: NBDTs match or outperform modern neural networks on CIFAR, ImageNet and better generalize to unseen classes by up to 16%. Furthermore, our surrogate loss improves the original model's accuracy by up to 2%. NBDTs also afford (2) interpretability: improving human trustby clearly identifying model mistakes and assisting in dataset debugging. Object detection and recognition are important problems in computer vision. Since these problems are meta-heuristic, despite a lot of research, practically usable, intelligent, real-time, and dynamic object detection/recognition methods are still unavailable. The accuracy level of any algorithm or even Google glass project is below 16% for over 22,000 object categories. With this accuracy, it’s practically unusable. This paper reviews the various aspects of object detection and the challenges involved. The aspects addressed are feature types, learning model, object templates, matching schemes, and boosting methods. Most current research works are highlighted and discussed. Decision making tips are included with extensive discussion of the merits and demerits of each scheme.

Online First. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/xlm0000103 Abstract: In this talk I present some recent work looking at the question of how to understanding learning complex computer-based tasks in terms of component learning processes. The research tests and examines what Lee and Anderson (2001) labelled the "decomposition hypothesis" : i.e., that learning complex tasks can be understand as the result of learning many simpler subtasks. To test these ideas, we get participants to practice computer-based tasks where all mouse clicks and key presses are logged. We then extract a range of measures of strategy use, subtask performance, and overall task performance. We then use Bayesian hierarchical methods to test models of how strategy use and performance changes with practice at the individual-level. Overall, these model provide a more nuanced representation of how complex tasks can be decomposed in terms of simpler learning mechanisms. The research also presents a case study of how Bayesian methods can be used to yield novel insights to well-established psychological questions. Bio: Dr Jeromy Anglim is a lecturer at Deakin University in Melbourne. He completed his PhD at University of Melbourne on mathematical models of learning, and his Post Doc in the Melbourne Business School on applications of Bayesian hierarchical models to psychology.
