Music Video Analysis
1. The Vaccines - If You Wanna Music video analysis! Current Music Video Research/Analysis Antonia Roberts
2. Current Music Video Research/Analysis Antonia Roberts The silhouette's create quite an edgy effect, which reflects the indie genre of music, as songs are often slightly more edgy and original. These are quite long shots which show the whole of the band, including their musical instruments and sound system, as if they were actually performing a live show. This is something that a few people in our survey said they were looking for within an indie music video, however we are unsure whether it’s the road we want to go down at the moment! I really like the effect the silhouette’s do create though, and the impact of the black against a bright colour. The colour scheme used throughout the video, is mainly primary colours. (As well as some darker hues and warm browns, as shown on the next slide) The primary colour red, connotes energy and passion and is often seen within the music industry, such as on magazine covers and band posters, the yellow is also a warm energetic colour, and both of these contrast with the darker blue, which shows creativity and is also seen as a more calming colour. The use of all three of these colours together is effective, as they compliment each other really well, and so are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they are also quite masculine colours, therefore attracting a more masculine audience.
3. Current Music Video Research/Analysis Antonia Roberts As I mentioned on the previous slide, many of the close-up shots are complimentary of warmer yellow and light brown tones, having a softer effect on the audience. They are also quite understated colours, that don’t draw attention away from what the close-up shots are showing, in this case the lead singer, the guitar and the drum kit. Indie bands put a huge emphasis on their musical ability and so the attention to the music instruments reflect this to the audience. The video itself, which shows the band playing their instruments also highlights the bands love for music and what they do, creating a positive image to their fans and audience. The music video is created from many short takes, which quickly cut from one member of the band to another, or from one instrument to another, this compliments the fast tempo of the song. I think when we create our own music video we will have to pay valid attention to the beat and tempo of the song, and thus relate our editing to it. So that the cuts and different shots don’t interrupt the flow of the song. We want our video to be relevant and appropriate to the song and artist/band we are creating it for.

5. Current Music Video Research/Analysis Antonia Roberts Like the video by the Vaccine’s, this video also features an aspect of the primary colours, seen in these shots below are red, blue and orange/yellow hues. This is something that seems like a popular colour scheme for indie music videos and so we may wish to investigate into this further when deciding on a colour scheme. This video also takes great advantage for the use of lighting, which create these colours, such as the blue light shown in the middle screen shot. A huge element to the success of our video will be how effective the lighting looks, we will need to decide whether it should look realistic or be more creative and unrealistic. The use of the leaves easily creates a setting for the music video, which is something we could take our own twist on, using props to create a certain setting or atmosphere within our budget. The costume and make-up is also reflective of a typical female artist, as it is quite unique and unusual. These are all things we have to consider when creating our music video, we want to follow the conventions of indie music video’s without falling into the trap of making it look cliché or unimaginative.
6. Current Music Video Research/Analysis Antonia Roberts I love the effect of the fairy lights in these shots, but how also with the use of other lights, they creates different atmospheres, the first shot has a darker background and the fairy lights contrast to this, and stand out from the lack of other lights/filters. In the middle screen shot there is a blue tinge, creating a calming atmosphere to the shot, which compliments the central glowing and background sparkling of the fairy lights. Unlike the other video I feel this is much more directed to females, the fairy lights are very feminine as is the light white hues created in the bottom shot. It’s interesting that indie bands/artists seem to attract an audience of the same sex, which is dissimilar to many other artists in genre’s such as pop… … So when we create our music video we will need to decide whether to follow this pattern, or to attempt to create a video which attracts both males and females. The shots I have selected here are all filmed from a low angle, creating a feeling of power and dominance from the singer, Florence, presenting her to her audience as a passionate singer in control of her own art form. Camera angles are something we will also need to discuss within our group, as many indie videos combine a mixture of low and high shots.
