When timid users step up to your site and are spooked by the ghosts of content past, or those who dare to enter become lost in a maze of composted navigation, a dusting just won’t fix the years/decades of content rot. You know you need to pull everything out to figure out what you have, what to keep, and what to toss—but that can be a daunting and overwhelming endeavor. In this talk, I’ll equip you with the tools and approaches you’ll need to face the overwhelming content beast head-on, to organize it in a way that is not only useful to your visitors, but actually feels welcoming. This talk introduces information architecture techniques, best suited for site owners, designers, freelancers, or small teams lacking dedicated content strategists.

Put down that design tool! We typically turn toward graphic tools like Sketch for wireframing, then export into a presenter like InVision for usability tests. We try our darndest to get the menu functionality to “appear” like code, to fake responsive design, and to audit every hotspot linking to every screenshot. This is an updated version of Discussing Design: The Art of Critique. We’ve all struggled at times in sharing our designs with teammates and stakeholders and collecting feedback on them. The comments we receive can seem to more about personal preference or indicate some misalignment of goals and vision for the project. Our ability to critique and to facilitate critique with others speaks directly to the quality of these conversations. Designers frequently complain about the quality and uselessness of the feedback they are given, but we rarely take a step back and examine how to collect useful feedback and make our discussions around our designs more productive. With this talk we look deeper into the various aspects of critique, not just as an activity for collecting feedback, but as a key skill in our ability to communicate and collaborate. We examine the language, rules and strategies for critique and provide participants with takeaways that can immediately be put to work to create a useful, collaborative environment for discussing designs.

When I first started out with web and graphic design I was charging pennies because I felt I was not good enough. For my first website I charged $500 and the second website I charged $0 and was later paid $1,000. After comparing my work to others on the internet I soon found others were charging $5,000 to $10,000 for a website and were not giving as much value as I was. In this session I share my pricing journey as well as tips on how freelancers can double what they are earning by creating a process and upgrading their professionalism to earn higher value clients.
