The presentation gives an overview of how the HOTEL (Holistic Approach to Technology Enhanced Learning) project intends to develop and test an Innovation Support Model which will help research projects in TEL/e-learning reach sustainability / commercialisation.
Time for a New Approach to Innovation in Technology Enhanced Learning?
1. Presenter: Anthony F. Camilleri (EFQUEL)
Paper Contributors: Fabio Nasimbeni (MENON Network), Claudio Dondi
(SCIENTER), Ulf Ehlers (EFQUEL), Carmen L. Padron-Napoles (ATOS Innovation)
Time for a New Approach to Innovation in
Technology Enhanced Learning?
3. Issues addressed by HOTEL
• TEL research so far focused mostly on technologies developed «ad-
hoc» for learning
• Bottom up innovation in TEL not yet sufficiently considered by
research (input to learning theories)
• Impact of available learning theories on TEL practices not sufficiently
analysed
Need for working paradigms on
how to support innovation and
mainstreaming
4. • To design an innovation support model to speed up
mainstreaming;
• To pilot the designed innovation cycle in three real life environments
(Learning Exploratorium Labs on Higher Education, Workplace and
Individual Professional Learning);
• To disseminate and create awareness in the research and practice
community about the results of HOTEL;
• To help FP7 projects to identify new challenges and include TEL
projects in the Labs, where relevant;
• To ensure sustainability and multiplication of HOTEL by providing
to TEL actors and stakeholders a validated shortened Innovation
Cycle for TEL.
The HOTEL objectives
6. • Report attempts comprehensive list of emerging
technologies, grouped into clusters.
Emerging Technologies Landscape
• Web 2.0 based tools and systems
• Ubiquitous computing
• Augmented reality
• Access-to-content related technologies
• Human computer interaction
• Learning analytics
• Games and virtual worlds
• Environments and technologies for
collaboration
• Semantic-aware systems
• Personalised, adaptive technologies
• Other technologies
• Networks of excellence
• Each technology analysed in terms of relevance to education, and
time/barriers to mainstream adoption
7. • Why do so many research projects into technology fail to provide
sustainable results? (over 50 surveyed)
• What is missing from the typical
Research Develop Pilot Disseminate Valorise methodology?
• How can we improve things (support action)?
Unofficial Research Question
13. • Public call for innovators via the HOTEL website
• C. 60 applications received – 21 to be tested to be tested
conceptually, and 9 to be tested ‘live’

14. • Lab 1: Learning in Higher Education – hosted by
UNIR university (La Rioja)
• Lab 2: Learning at Work – hosted by UNIR
• Lab 3: Learning in Professional Networks –
hosted by EFQUEL
Each lab will serve as a live test-bed for testing and
implementing innovations
and the support model itself

16. Testing Adoption / Diffusion Potential
Step 1: Classify cases in terms of learning-theories:
17. Testing Adoption / Diffusion Potential
Step 2: Collect information on target groups, and
intended aims
Step 3: Analyse these in terms of needs / problems
addressed and potential impact
Step 4: Assess Innovativeness – cross with
emerging technologies map
18. • Stakeholder Panel to Assess Innovation
• Innovator Panel to Assess Innovation
Analysing Perceived Characteristics of the
Innovation
Criteria:
• relative advantage: how is it better than the existing method in terms of
potential for learning?
• efficiency: does it achieve the same learning with fewer resources?
• complexity: how difficult is it to understand / interface with pedagogical
norms
• startup difficulty: how hard is it to implement within the context of
existing systems
• scalability: how easy is it to deploy across educational systems?
19. Desired Outcomes
Our Innovation Support Model, after several iterations should:
• Provide an analytical framework to classify innovations, and properly
understand their advantage/contribution within a pedagogical context
• Assist decision-makers/funders to pick ‘winners’
• Help innovators to:
• properly formulate their ideas in a way which aids introduction
• highlight lacunae in their diffusion/adoption strategies
• assist them in developing indicators to improve their
diffusion/adoption
• OVERALL: Accelerate mainstreaming of technologies into education
