•  European Commission (EC): “media literacy is the
   competence to cope, autonomously and critically,
   with the communication and media environment
   established within the consequense of the
   ʻinformation society.” (EAVI study, 2009, p. 21) !

•  EC makes a clear distinction between two
   dimensions: !
   o  1) Individual competences (for example: technical use,
       critical understanding and social skills) !
   o  2) Environmental factors (for example: media
       education, policies and regulation, media availability)!

“The terms ʻcompetenceʼ and ʻkey competenceʼ are preferred to ʻbasic
 skillsʼ which was considered too restrictive as it was generally taken to
 refer to basic literacy and numeracy and to what are known variously
 as ʻsurvivalʼ or ʻlifeʼ skills. ʻCompetenceʼ is considered to refer to a
 combination of skills, knowledge, aptitudes and attitude, and include
 the disposition to learn in addition to know-how.” (Martin & Grudziecki,
 2006, p.256) !

  • 2. User Empowerment is... ! “Enabling citizens to control their own lives and to take advantage of opportunities. It means increasing the range of human choise.” (Walker & Van Der Maesen, 2003, p .5)!
  • 3. Media  literacy  is…   •  Knowing how to keep personal information private! •  Differentiate between media violence and real world violence •  Recognize bias and stereotyping in the media
  • 4. Media  literacy  is…! •  Consume and produce media messages for civic engagement •  Understanding how media messages are constructed •  Knowing which online information is reliable and knowing how to recognise correct information
  • 5. Media  literacy  is…! “ The ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create messages across a variety of contexts.” (Livingstone, 2004, p. 5)
  • 6. Media  literacy  is…! •  European Commission (EC): “media literacy is the competence to cope, autonomously and critically, with the communication and media environment established within the consequense of the ʻinformation society.” (EAVI study, 2009, p. 21) ! •  EC makes a clear distinction between two dimensions: ! o  1) Individual competences (for example: technical use, critical understanding and social skills) ! o  2) Environmental factors (for example: media education, policies and regulation, media availability)!

Searching for sense! •  Media competences =! •  Competences vs skills: ! “The terms ʻcompetenceʼ and ʻkey competenceʼ are preferred to ʻbasic skillsʼ which was considered too restrictive as it was generally taken to refer to basic literacy and numeracy and to what are known variously as ʻsurvivalʼ or ʻlifeʼ skills. ʻCompetenceʼ is considered to refer to a combination of skills, knowledge, aptitudes and attitude, and include the disposition to learn in addition to know-how.” (Martin & Grudziecki, 2006, p.256) !
