2. WHAT IS GOV 2.0, OPENGOV?
• Gov 2.0 is about how we can use technology to customize
government for each individual and improve its efficiency.
• It will help us return to the founding governmental principals that a
government is for, by and of the people”.
• Open Government includes a promotion of greater government
transparency, accessibility and collaboration.
• Open Government isn’t necessarily grounded entirely in
technology, although much of it does rely on technology.
• Gov 2.0 and Open Gov works with all levels of government and then
some! (municipal, provincial, federal, continental and global).

3. CANADA AND GOV 2.0
• Canada has recently taken a pledge to implement the principals
of Gov 2.0 by joining the Open Government Partnership in 2012
• This will be pursued through three main streams: Open Data,
Open Information, and Open Dialogue.

5. DATA, DATA, DATA!
A data set is information that is collected and released by the government in
machine readable formats. Data sets are provided in raw data form, so that
means as the government collects it, they throw it up on to a site for all the
citizens to see.
Some examples of data sets include, but are not limited to:
• Water quality, environment data
• Census data
• Parks and recreation data
• Transportation data
• Health and safety data
• Housing

6. DIFFERENT TYPES OF APPS
Gov 2.0 and Open Gov have led the way into the creation of new and exciting
apps for use and betterment of communities worldwide. Here are some
examples:
• Rocketman – an app to check TTC streetcar and bus schedules
• Hailo – an app to help you track down a cab
• KAIST – from South Korea, a citywide indoor navigation app
• OpenBlockOakland – from Oakland, California, an app that allows local businesses to
pair economic data with user photos to help attract more business into the downtown
core.
• Politify – an app created to visualize and personalize public policy data. It shows the
hypothetical impacts of the United States’ Presidential candidates’ proposed economic
policies at the household and postal code levels
• CitizenBridge – a platform that allows people and elected representatives to work
together. Its aim is to transform our Representative Democracy into a Participatory
Democracy.

7. TODAY’S CHALLENGE
What we need you to do today:
• Go to this link: www.bit.ly/birchmount
• Pick a data set from the list of countries provided
• Brainstorm an idea for a social innovation or civic tech-based app with
your team, using any of the data sets as a starting point. What ideas can
you come up with to make something that will benefit the community?
• Put together a ONE-MINUTE pitch to present to the judges and to the
rest of the class.
• Pick one person from your team to present your idea.
• The judges will then ask your whole team questions and provide
feedback.
GOOD LUCK!

8. WHERE DO I START?
Here are some things to think about when brainstorming ideas:
• What data set will you be using?
• What impact will this have on the community?
• What level of community does this target? Local, nationwide, world?
• How does this help the community? Who does it help?
• Who can use this? Everyone? A certain group of people?
• Could this be on several different platforms? Computer, mobile … etc.
• If this isn’t based in Canada, could this be adapted to other countries?
