Strength
It is the ability to act or to over come the resistance
a) Facilitates the ability to resist disease as it affects organic efficiency .
b) It is the amount of force a muscle or muscles group can exert.
c) It is achieved by voluntary muscle contraction.
d) Specific type of strength is required in specific type of sports
DYNAMIC STRENGTH
Dynamic strength is also called isotonic strength because it is related to the
movement which is clearly visible. Dynamic strength is of diminishing
tendency in which muscles refuses to work after sometime.
In each sports movement, strength appears in a different form which are
•Maximum Strength
•Explosive Strength
•Strength Endurance
STATIC STRENGTH
Static strength is also called isometric strength.
It is the ability of muscles to act against resistance.
This type of strength is not seen directly in sports but in some
sports, it is applied in phases.
TYPES OF STRENGTH
(a)Maximum strength: - Ability to act
against maximum resistance
• Arm Wrestling
• Bench Press
• Wrestling
(b) Explosive strength: Ability to act
against resistance with speed
•Weight lifting
•Start of Sprint
•Jumps
(c) Strength Endurance: Ability to act
against resistance under condition of
fatigue.
•Cycling
•Marathon
•Football
ISOMETRIC EXERCISES
Isometric is “iso-- Same” and “metric-- Length”
•No change in the length of the muscles.
•Work done cannot be observed.
• Require less time and equipment
• Useful for maintaining strength in case of injury
Archery, weight lifting, gymnastic are the examples of isometric movements.
•Pushing the wall
•Hanging on Pole
Work done = Force × Distance moved
But distance moved is 0, therefore work done is zero.
ISOTONIC EXERCISES
1. Isotonic is “iso– same” and “tonic– tension”
2. Movements of muscles can be observed directly
3. Lengthening and Shortening of muscles can be seen and called
eccentric contraction and concentric contraction
4. When we throw a ball, jump. run, weight training, these type of
contraction occurs
5. Exercise can be done with equipment or without equipment.
6. Increase the flexibility and length of the muscles and are good for
conditioning in sports.
ISOKINETIC EXERCISES
1. ISOKINETIC is “iso – same” and “kinetic – motion”
2. Introduced by J.J. Perrine in 1968
3. Exercises are done using specially design machine and are
combination of isotonic and iso-metric exercises
4. Machines allow for maximum resistance over the complete range
of motion
5. These types of movements are usually applied in water sports,
skating, climbing, running etc.
Endurance
It is ability to continue the activity under the condition of fatigue or
for a long time.
TYPES OF ENDURANCE
•Speed Endurance :- It is the ability of an individual to perform a
movement with high speed to resist of fatigue in activities upto 45
seconds. Ex. Gymnastic, & Combat Games, 100 Meter Sprint
•Short term endurance :- Short term endurance is needed to resist
fatigue in sports activities lasting from 45 seconds to 2 minutes. Ex. 800 m
race.
•Medium term endurance :- It is the activity lasting from 2.min to 11
minutes. Ex. 1500 & 3000 mts.
•Long term Endurance :- It is needed for those sports which require
more than 11 minutes time ex. 5000m to 1000m cross
•Strength Endurance: It is the ability to overcome or act against
resistance under the condition of fatigue. Ex. Judo, Wrestling or Boxing
Methods of developing Endurance
Continuous Method :- In continuous of method, the exercise is done for a long
duration without taking rest. We do the exercise for a long duration. So the intensity of
work is low. The heart rate during the exercise for a sportsman should be between 140-
160 beats per minutes. For fast continuous method the heart rate of an athlete should
be increased about 175 - 180. Min. Its duration of exercise should be more than 30
minutes. Ex. running walking, cycling, cross-country race etc.
Advantages
1. Doing work continuously in spite of being tired strengthens the will to work.
2. According to this method increases the red blood cells in muscles.
3. In this method the working efficiency of heart and lungs get enhanced.
4. In this method Glycogen in muscles and liver gets increased.
5. Player develop self discipline and self confidence. Apart from this their will power
also gets enhanced.
Interval Method :- This method is very effective for developing endurance for
track runners. Intervals are given to the athlete in between the repetition for recovery.
The recovery period for athlete varies from person to person. The Heart should go up
to 18 beat/ min. and when the heart rate comes down to 120-130 beats/ min again the
repetition/ work starts. The training load should be given again after checking the
heart rate of the athlete.
Ex. Middle distance race, foot ball, hockey etc.
Advantages
1. If an athlete perform these exercise in proper way then it will help to improve the
working capacity in short time.
2. This method has a positive effect on both respiratory system and circulatory system.
3. The trainer can observe a player easily. The player in short time can enhance his
endurance.
4. The player comes to learn about the effect of his training.
5. If the player mistake in executing the coach/ trainer can give him useful suggestion
during recovery time. Thus, the players moral may be boosted.
Fartlek Training Method: It is another method to develop the endurance ability.
This method was developed by Swedish coach “ Gosta Holmer” in 1930. So it is also
known as “Swedish play” or “Speed play” (charges his/her pace. Himself/herself
according to surrounding (Hills, River, Forest, Mud etc.)
This method helps in development of endurance of the sports person. Athlete changes
his/her speed according. So it is self-disciplined in nature. The heart rate fluctuate
between 140 - 180 beats/ minute Fartlek training involves varying our pace throughout
our run. Alternating between fast and slow pace.
Advantages
•It’s a great test for strength and endurance
•It improves speed and race tactics
•It improves the mind over matter game
•It improves your ability to put on a spurt in races and overtake a competitor when tired,
or knock seconds off your finish time
•It is great for getting into the racing mindset as a fartlek session mimics the surges of
speed you may put on in a race for example: to pass other runners, sprint for the line, or
reach check point on time
•Incorporating these surges of speed helps runners to gauge and learn how much they
can push their body over shorter segments while at the same time keeping enough
physical and mental energy in reserve to go the whole distance and complete a race
•There is a lot of flexibility within the workout, for example a high intensity session
where you push your body to its limits or a low intensity session if you are tapering for a
race or easing back into running post-injury
•A fartlek session can be completed alone or with another runner or in a group.
Speed
1. It is the ability or capacity of an individual to perform a
movement of the same pattern at faster rate.
2. Different sports skills require different types of fast
movements and quick reactions.
3. Speed depends on heredity factor specially on types of muscle
fiber one has.
TYPES OF SPEED ABILITY
1. Reaction speed ability: It is the ability to
act against a signal. Ex. Start a race on
bullet shot, Hitting a cricket ball,
Hitting on no ball in cricket
2. Acceleration speed ability: It is the ability
to achieve max speed in minimum possible
time. Ex. Running between the wicket in
Cricket, Long Jump Approach run, Fast
Bowler run up
3. Movement speed ability : It is the ability
to do a single small movement in minimum
possible time. Ex. Throws, Jumps etc
4. Locomotor speed ability: It is the ability
to maintain max speed as long as possible.
Ex. 100 meter Sprint
5. Speed Endurance: It is the ability to do
the movement as quick as possible under
the condition of fatigue. Ex. 400 Meter race
Methods to improve Speed
Pace run : Pace run means running the whole distance with a constant speed.
Generally 800 meter and above races are included in pace races. An athlete can run
a distance of 300 meter. at full speed but in longer races such a 800 mtr. or
above, he must conserve his energy by reducing the speed. Example-If there is a
runner of 800m race. His best time is 1 minute 40 seconds. So he should run first
400 m in 49 seconds and next 400m in 51 seconds. This procedure is called pace
race or pace run.
Acceleration Run : Acceleration run are usually used to develop speed indirectly by
improving explosive strength, technique, flexibility and movement frequency.
It is the ability of a sprinter to achieve high speed from a stationary position.
For direct improvement of acceleration speed a sprinter should do 25-30 mtr. sprint
of 6-12 times. The maximum speed should be achieved within 5-6 sec. Sufficient
intervals should be provided between the repetitions.
Flexibility
•It is the range of movements of joints
•Range of movements varies significantly from joint to joint but depends
on the structure of the surrounding tendons, ligaments and muscle tissues
•Flexibility is related to genetic factors and physical activity programme.
Methods to Develop Flexibility
Ballistic method: In ballistic method, the movement is performed with a swing
in a rhythmic way. The related joint is stretched with a swing. The stretching exercise
can be performed rhythmically with a count. At each count, the joint is stretched to
the maximum limit and then it is again flexed.
Static stretching method: Static stretching method involves gradually easing
into the stretch position and holding the position. The amount of time a static
stretch is held depends on one’s purpose. If it is a part of cool down, then the stretch
should be held for 10 seconds.
Dynamic stretching method: Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and
arm swings that take you gently to the limit of your range of motion. Where the event
requires a dynamic movement it is appropriate to conduct dynamic stretching
exercises.
Proprioceptive Neuro Muscular Facilitation: PNF stretching is much longer
stretching (Supine and Chair) session when compared to the other types. It requires a
partner‘s help to utilize this technique. The use of a partner is so that there can be a
contraction and relaxation phase. This type of stretching is actually the most
effective form of stretching, but it is also considered the most painful type of
stretching,
Coordinative abilities
Coordinative abilities are those abilities of an individual which enable the
individual to do various related activities properly as well as efficiently. Our accuracy,
rhythm, flow and constancy depend on our coordinative abilities.
Types of Coordinative Ability
Orientation ability: It is the ability to determine the position of the body and
its parts in time and space in relation to gravity, moving objects like ball,
opponent, partner and playing field etc. This ability depends on functional
capacity of sensory organs like eyes and kinesthetic sense organs etc.
Coupling ability: Coupling ability is the ability to combine the movements of
different body parts for performing perfect sports movements. This ability is very
significant for approximately all sports but specially in team games, gymnastics
and combative sports (boxing and wrestling etc.). For example in boding, the
movements of hands, head, trunk and fat are essential to couple to achieve a
certain goal.
Adaptive ability : It enables modifications of motor activity on the basis of
comparison or anticipation of new or changing conditions during performing
motor activity.

Strength It is the ability to act or to over come the resistance a) Facilitates the ability to resist disease as it affects organic efficiency . b) It is the amount of force a muscle or muscles group can exert. c) It is achieved by voluntary muscle contraction. d) Specific type of strength is required in specific type of sports

  • 5. DYNAMIC STRENGTH Dynamic strength is also called isotonic strength because it is related to the movement which is clearly visible. Dynamic strength is of diminishing tendency in which muscles refuses to work after sometime. In each sports movement, strength appears in a different form which are •Maximum Strength •Explosive Strength •Strength Endurance STATIC STRENGTH Static strength is also called isometric strength. It is the ability of muscles to act against resistance. This type of strength is not seen directly in sports but in some sports, it is applied in phases.

TYPES OF STRENGTH (a)Maximum strength: - Ability to act against maximum resistance • Arm Wrestling • Bench Press • Wrestling (b) Explosive strength: Ability to act against resistance with speed •Weight lifting •Start of Sprint •Jumps (c) Strength Endurance: Ability to act against resistance under condition of fatigue. •Cycling •Marathon •Football

ISOMETRIC EXERCISES Isometric is “iso-- Same” and “metric-- Length” •No change in the length of the muscles. •Work done cannot be observed. • Require less time and equipment • Useful for maintaining strength in case of injury Archery, weight lifting, gymnastic are the examples of isometric movements. •Pushing the wall •Hanging on Pole Work done = Force × Distance moved But distance moved is 0, therefore work done is zero.
  • 8. ISOTONIC EXERCISES 1. Isotonic is “iso– same” and “tonic– tension” 2. Movements of muscles can be observed directly 3. Lengthening and Shortening of muscles can be seen and called eccentric contraction and concentric contraction 4. When we throw a ball, jump. run, weight training, these type of contraction occurs 5. Exercise can be done with equipment or without equipment. 6. Increase the flexibility and length of the muscles and are good for conditioning in sports.
  • 9. ISOKINETIC EXERCISES 1. ISOKINETIC is “iso – same” and “kinetic – motion” 2. Introduced by J.J. Perrine in 1968 3. Exercises are done using specially design machine and are combination of isotonic and iso-metric exercises 4. Machines allow for maximum resistance over the complete range of motion 5. These types of movements are usually applied in water sports, skating, climbing, running etc.
  • 10. Endurance It is ability to continue the activity under the condition of fatigue or for a long time.
  • 11. TYPES OF ENDURANCE •Speed Endurance :- It is the ability of an individual to perform a movement with high speed to resist of fatigue in activities upto 45 seconds. Ex. Gymnastic, & Combat Games, 100 Meter Sprint •Short term endurance :- Short term endurance is needed to resist fatigue in sports activities lasting from 45 seconds to 2 minutes. Ex. 800 m race. •Medium term endurance :- It is the activity lasting from 2.min to 11 minutes. Ex. 1500 & 3000 mts. •Long term Endurance :- It is needed for those sports which require more than 11 minutes time ex. 5000m to 1000m cross •Strength Endurance: It is the ability to overcome or act against resistance under the condition of fatigue. Ex. Judo, Wrestling or Boxing
  • 12. Methods of developing Endurance Continuous Method :- In continuous of method, the exercise is done for a long duration without taking rest. We do the exercise for a long duration. So the intensity of work is low. The heart rate during the exercise for a sportsman should be between 140- 160 beats per minutes. For fast continuous method the heart rate of an athlete should be increased about 175 - 180. Min. Its duration of exercise should be more than 30 minutes. Ex. running walking, cycling, cross-country race etc. Advantages 1. Doing work continuously in spite of being tired strengthens the will to work. 2. According to this method increases the red blood cells in muscles. 3. In this method the working efficiency of heart and lungs get enhanced. 4. In this method Glycogen in muscles and liver gets increased. 5. Player develop self discipline and self confidence. Apart from this their will power also gets enhanced.
  • 13. Interval Method :- This method is very effective for developing endurance for track runners. Intervals are given to the athlete in between the repetition for recovery. The recovery period for athlete varies from person to person. The Heart should go up to 18 beat/ min. and when the heart rate comes down to 120-130 beats/ min again the repetition/ work starts. The training load should be given again after checking the heart rate of the athlete. Ex. Middle distance race, foot ball, hockey etc. Advantages 1. If an athlete perform these exercise in proper way then it will help to improve the working capacity in short time. 2. This method has a positive effect on both respiratory system and circulatory system. 3. The trainer can observe a player easily. The player in short time can enhance his endurance. 4. The player comes to learn about the effect of his training. 5. If the player mistake in executing the coach/ trainer can give him useful suggestion during recovery time. Thus, the players moral may be boosted.
  • 14. Fartlek Training Method: It is another method to develop the endurance ability. This method was developed by Swedish coach “ Gosta Holmer” in 1930. So it is also known as “Swedish play” or “Speed play” (charges his/her pace. Himself/herself according to surrounding (Hills, River, Forest, Mud etc.) This method helps in development of endurance of the sports person. Athlete changes his/her speed according. So it is self-disciplined in nature. The heart rate fluctuate between 140 - 180 beats/ minute Fartlek training involves varying our pace throughout our run. Alternating between fast and slow pace. Advantages •It’s a great test for strength and endurance •It improves speed and race tactics •It improves the mind over matter game •It improves your ability to put on a spurt in races and overtake a competitor when tired, or knock seconds off your finish time •It is great for getting into the racing mindset as a fartlek session mimics the surges of speed you may put on in a race for example: to pass other runners, sprint for the line, or reach check point on time •Incorporating these surges of speed helps runners to gauge and learn how much they can push their body over shorter segments while at the same time keeping enough physical and mental energy in reserve to go the whole distance and complete a race •There is a lot of flexibility within the workout, for example a high intensity session where you push your body to its limits or a low intensity session if you are tapering for a race or easing back into running post-injury •A fartlek session can be completed alone or with another runner or in a group.
  • 15. Speed 1. It is the ability or capacity of an individual to perform a movement of the same pattern at faster rate. 2. Different sports skills require different types of fast movements and quick reactions. 3. Speed depends on heredity factor specially on types of muscle fiber one has.
  • 16. TYPES OF SPEED ABILITY 1. Reaction speed ability: It is the ability to act against a signal. Ex. Start a race on bullet shot, Hitting a cricket ball, Hitting on no ball in cricket 2. Acceleration speed ability: It is the ability to achieve max speed in minimum possible time. Ex. Running between the wicket in Cricket, Long Jump Approach run, Fast Bowler run up 3. Movement speed ability : It is the ability to do a single small movement in minimum possible time. Ex. Throws, Jumps etc 4. Locomotor speed ability: It is the ability to maintain max speed as long as possible. Ex. 100 meter Sprint 5. Speed Endurance: It is the ability to do the movement as quick as possible under the condition of fatigue. Ex. 400 Meter race
  • 17. Methods to improve Speed Pace run : Pace run means running the whole distance with a constant speed. Generally 800 meter and above races are included in pace races. An athlete can run a distance of 300 meter. at full speed but in longer races such a 800 mtr. or above, he must conserve his energy by reducing the speed. Example-If there is a runner of 800m race. His best time is 1 minute 40 seconds. So he should run first 400 m in 49 seconds and next 400m in 51 seconds. This procedure is called pace race or pace run. Acceleration Run : Acceleration run are usually used to develop speed indirectly by improving explosive strength, technique, flexibility and movement frequency. It is the ability of a sprinter to achieve high speed from a stationary position. For direct improvement of acceleration speed a sprinter should do 25-30 mtr. sprint of 6-12 times. The maximum speed should be achieved within 5-6 sec. Sufficient intervals should be provided between the repetitions.
  • 18. Flexibility •It is the range of movements of joints •Range of movements varies significantly from joint to joint but depends on the structure of the surrounding tendons, ligaments and muscle tissues •Flexibility is related to genetic factors and physical activity programme.
  • 19. Methods to Develop Flexibility Ballistic method: In ballistic method, the movement is performed with a swing in a rhythmic way. The related joint is stretched with a swing. The stretching exercise can be performed rhythmically with a count. At each count, the joint is stretched to the maximum limit and then it is again flexed. Static stretching method: Static stretching method involves gradually easing into the stretch position and holding the position. The amount of time a static stretch is held depends on one’s purpose. If it is a part of cool down, then the stretch should be held for 10 seconds. Dynamic stretching method: Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and arm swings that take you gently to the limit of your range of motion. Where the event requires a dynamic movement it is appropriate to conduct dynamic stretching exercises. Proprioceptive Neuro Muscular Facilitation: PNF stretching is much longer stretching (Supine and Chair) session when compared to the other types. It requires a partner‘s help to utilize this technique. The use of a partner is so that there can be a contraction and relaxation phase. This type of stretching is actually the most effective form of stretching, but it is also considered the most painful type of stretching,
  • 20. Coordinative abilities Coordinative abilities are those abilities of an individual which enable the individual to do various related activities properly as well as efficiently. Our accuracy, rhythm, flow and constancy depend on our coordinative abilities.
  • 21. Types of Coordinative Ability Orientation ability: It is the ability to determine the position of the body and its parts in time and space in relation to gravity, moving objects like ball, opponent, partner and playing field etc. This ability depends on functional capacity of sensory organs like eyes and kinesthetic sense organs etc. Coupling ability: Coupling ability is the ability to combine the movements of different body parts for performing perfect sports movements. This ability is very significant for approximately all sports but specially in team games, gymnastics and combative sports (boxing and wrestling etc.). For example in boding, the movements of hands, head, trunk and fat are essential to couple to achieve a certain goal. Adaptive ability : It enables modifications of motor activity on the basis of comparison or anticipation of new or changing conditions during performing motor activity.
