timeless poems
6. It is a contest
There are winners at these levels:
school
state
regional
national
7. Awards
State winners receive $200 and a paid
trip to Washington, D.C. to compete at
the national level.
State winner receives $500 stipend for
poetry books.
The national winner receives $20,000
and there are other cash prizes for other
places.
8. Rules for Competition
Must be a US citizen or permanent
resident
Must be in grades 9-12
Need to compete at the school level to
move on to other levels
11. Choosing Poems
All poems must be selected from the Poetry
Out Loud print or online anthology
For the state and regional finals, students
must prepare 3 poems.

must prepare 3 poems.
One must be 25 lines or fewer, and one must
be written before the 20th century.

The same poem may be used to meet both
criteria and may be the student’s 3rd poem.
