COMMON NOUNS AND PROPER NOUNS
KEY QUESTIONS:
Have Common Nouns and Proper Nouns differences in English grammar? If yes,
how are they different? How Common Nouns and Proper Nouns are useful in English
grammar?
OBJECTIVES:
After the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Identify the key differences of a Common Nouns and Proper Nouns.
2. Describe how Common Nouns and Proper Nouns are different by giving
examples each based on a Venn diagram.
3. Define Common Nouns and Proper Nouns.
4. Present each Common Nouns and Proper Nouns found in the Venn diagram by
constructing a sentence.
5. Appreciate the importance of the common nouns and proper nouns in English
grammar.

Word Relay
The teacher prepared different questions (as a review from his previous lesson)
to be answered by the students. The word will be passed on from one student to
another while they are performing and singing the human body parts.
Guessing Game:
In this activity, four words of each group ( tree, hero, country, Dr. Jose P. Rizal,…
for example) will be given to the class and ask them if they know what are these words
all about or what kind of the parts of speech they belonged. If the students cannot
recognize any of these words, the teacher will tell the class that each of the words is a
Proper Noun and Common Noun.

The teacher will call a representative from different groups to share their
thoughts, perceptions, insights and opinions of each of the words given/presented.

Activity 1
What happens when we transform the Common Nouns to Proper Nouns inthe
sentence?
Objectives:
After performing this activity, you should be able to:
1. Describe how Common Nouns and Proper Nouns by giving examples each based on
a Venn diagram.
2. Present each example of Common Nouns and Proper Nouns found in Venn
diagram by constructing a sentence.
Materials:
1 Marker Adhesive tapes
Bond paper/Neon paper
Proper Nouns and Common Nouns Words Cards
Procedures:
1. Each group will think of a possible sentence that suits to each word.
2. Each group will write two sentences of each example of Common Noun and
Proper Noun words.
3. After that, each group will discuss each of the sentences.
4. Each group should have a representative to present and explain each of the
sentences to the class.

Common Nouns and Proper Nouns are basic categories of nouns in English
grammar. Common Nouns are names common to all individuals, places, events or
things of a group and they usually begin with a small letter while the Proper Nouns are
distinguished an individual, a place or a thing from all others in a group and they
always begin with capital letters.

Common Nouns and Proper Nouns are basic categories of nouns in English
grammar.
What are their key differences?
Common Nouns are general while the Proper Nouns are specific.
Common Nouns and Proper Nouns are very important in categorizing nouns.
So, what does it mean? It means that we can present general to specific materials and
ideas (concreteness and abstraction) of a noun.
How can we transform or convert Common Nouns to Proper Nouns?
You can convert actually Common Nouns to Proper Nouns by identifying their
specific or particular idea of a person, thing, event, place and animal.
How about the title of the books, stories, theses and research papers, Are they still
called Proper Nouns?
Yes they are. Thetitle of the books, stories, theses and research papers are proper
names of objects or entities. Hence, they are proper nouns.
