‘‘A hematologist, a surgeon and an anesthetist meet at a meeting and start
talking. . .’’
That is not the beginning of a joke, but the beginning of
ANEMO.1
ANEMO is born from an idea of two physicians, a hema-tologist
(GI) and an anesthetist (MP) who care for blood
saving: they started to inform, sensitize and involve physi-cians
and surgeons about these issues through meetings
and publications.
Their enthusiasm and determination attracted other
physicians interested on the topic, and the initial group
is progressively grown. Recently, the Italian Society for
haemapheresis and cell manipulation (SIdEM) has identi-fied
ANEMO group as a suitable partner to pursue a com-mon
mission: to improve culture and knowledge of blood
saving strategies.
ANEMO, in collaboration with SIdEM and the Italian
Society for Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Inten-sive
Therapy (SIAARTI), has started many initiatives aimed
at the diffusion of blood saving strategies in surgical
patients. Recently, a national survey has been launched
on the evaluation of blood needs and pre-surgical prepara-tion
of patients.
This ‘‘Theme Section’’ collects the papers presented at
the last annual meeting of the group held in Milan on April
5, 2011.

1 The name ANEMO takes its origin by union of beginning words of
ANEstesia and EMatOlogia (in Italian language) medical specialities at
whom belong the greater part of its members. This name was chosen
because in ancient Greek language it means ‘‘bloodless’’.
