SPECIFICATION
WRITING
BRIEF SPECIFICATION FOR 1ST CLASS BRICKWORK IN CM (1:6)
PropertiesofBricks–Soakinginwater–mortar–Workmanship–measurement–Scaffolding.
 Brick shall be table – moulded, well burnt in approved kiln, copper coloured, free from cracks and with sharp
andsquareedges
 The brick shall be uniform in shape and shall be of standard size and shall give a clear ringing sound when
struckwitheachother.
 Thebrick shallnotabsorb watermore thanonefifth of theirweightafteronehour of soaking inwater.
 Brickshallhavemaximum crushingstrengthof 10.5 N/mm2.
 The bricks shall be well soaked in water for atleast 12 hours before their use, preferably in water tank provided
atsiteof work.
 Theproportion of mortarshallbe 1:6 by volume.
 Thecement shallbe standardquality.
 Thesandshallbe cleanand course.
 The cement mortar shall be prepared in required quantity of not more than one bag of cement at a
timeandthisshall beconsumedin halfanhouraftermixing.
 Themixing ofmortarshall bedoneon awatertightplatformorin asteel trough.
 Thewaterfit fordrinking shallbeusedin preparingmortar.
 Thebrokenbricksshall notbeusedexceptasclosers.
 All cornersshallbetrulyin plumbandsidesshall bein line andlevel.
 Themortarshallbreakforbondingandshallnotexceed10 mm in thickness.
 All jointsshallberakedandfacesofwall shall becleanedattheendofeach dayswork.
 Only skilled masons shall be employed on the work and the work shall be kept well watered for at least 15
days.
 All brickworkshall becarriedoutin sucha waythatnoportionisraisedunduly aboveanother.
 Thelength andheight shallbemeasuredasonatsite.
 Thethicknessofwall shallbepaidforasonebrick,oneandhalfbricks,twobricksandsoon.
 Tofacilitatetheconstructionofbrickwork,necessaryandsuitablescaffoldingshall beprovided.
 Thescaffoldingshall bestrongandsoundandwithsufficientstrongsupports.
 Therateforbrickworkincludesthisnecessaryscaffoldingalso.
DETAILED SPECIFICATION FOR EARTHWORKEXCAVATION
Startingofwork–workmanship–excavatedmaterial–protectiontoexistingservices–measurement–
whattherateincludes.
 The excavation for the foundation trenches shall be carried out in all sorts of soils as per plan and
lining approvedatsite.
 Thesidesofthefoundationtrenchesshall betrulyvertical andbottomshall beuniformlylevelled.
 The excavated material shall be stacked away from the sides of the trenches of the excavation by
atleast2m.
 Thesurplusexcavatedmaterialshall bespreadoutuniformly uptoa leadof 100m.
 All the existing services such as pipes, sewers, electric cables etc., which are met with in foundation
trenchesshall becarefullysupportedandprotectedbycontractorasperinstructionoftheengineer.
 The excavation shall be measured as per exact length and width of the lowest step of footings
accordingtodrawing.
 The rate of excavation includes all timbering and other supports which are necessary for securing the
sidesofthetrenchesandthecontractorshall beresponsiblefortheirsafety.
 Noextraamountshallbepaidtothecontractorfortheexcavationoftheworkingspace.
 Thematerialorvaluablefoundduringexcavationshall bethepropertyoftheowner.
SPECIFICATION FOR MARBLE FLOORING
Quality of marble - samples –anchors and dowels –vertical and horizontal surfaces –
workmanship –finishing –measurement.
 The marble to be used for the work shall be first class quality, free from cracks, non porous, uniform in
colourandcarefullyselectedso astopresent harmoniousveins throughoutthefinished work.
 The samples of each type to be used shall be submitted to show the full range of variation and the work
shall becompletedwith marblesin accordancewiththeapprovedsamplebytheengineer.
 All necessary bronzeorbrassanchors ,dowels,clamps,wires etc,requiredtosecurethe marblesin place
shall havetobeprovidedbythe contractorandbuiltin atnoextracosttotheowner.
 Nomarbleshallbefacescrew.
 The vertical work commencing at floor level shall be allowed to set before the flooring is laid and the
marbleshall extendabout25mm belowthefinishedfloorlevel.
 The vertical and horizontal surfaces shall be laid in cement mortar (1:3) and the joints shall be finished
withwhitecement.
 The vertical marble shall be machine polished in the workshop and the hzl marbles shall be machine
polished afterlaying.
 The marble for dado and skirting shall be set in non staining white cement and of height described in
drawing.
 Theskirtingshallbe plain,roundedorofbevelled edges.
 Marbleworkshall becarriedoutin thebestworkmanshipmanner.
 All necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent staining or discolouration of marble surface due to
anymaterialusedin setting.
 All joints shallshow perfectalignment ofsurfaceandshall begroutedtomatchthecolourofmarble.
 All marble work shall be covered or finished with wax or other protective material as may be necessary
when set.
 The payment shall be made for the actual work done on site on superficial area basis and no extra
amountshall bepaidforwastageofmaterials,anchors,dowels,etc,
 The rate of the marble work shall include any drilling, cutting, fitting or making any special provisions
requiredin themarblework.
SPECIFICATION FOR 12MM THICK CEMENT PLASTER IN CM (1:4)
Preliminary – process of first coat – second coat of sagol finish after six hours of first
coat –watering –three coats ofwhite or colour wash - measurement

  • 4.  Only skilled masons shall be employed on the work and the work shall be kept well watered for at least 15 days.  All brickworkshall becarriedoutin sucha waythatnoportionisraisedunduly aboveanother.  Thelength andheight shallbemeasuredasonatsite.  Thethicknessofwall shallbepaidforasonebrick,oneandhalfbricks,twobricksandsoon.  Tofacilitatetheconstructionofbrickwork,necessaryandsuitablescaffoldingshall beprovided.  Thescaffoldingshall bestrongandsoundandwithsufficientstrongsupports.  Therateforbrickworkincludesthisnecessaryscaffoldingalso.
  • 5. DETAILED SPECIFICATION FOR EARTHWORKEXCAVATION Startingofwork–workmanship–excavatedmaterial–protectiontoexistingservices–measurement– whattherateincludes.  The excavation for the foundation trenches shall be carried out in all sorts of soils as per plan and lining approvedatsite.  Thesidesofthefoundationtrenchesshall betrulyvertical andbottomshall beuniformlylevelled.  The excavated material shall be stacked away from the sides of the trenches of the excavation by atleast2m.  Thesurplusexcavatedmaterialshall bespreadoutuniformly uptoa leadof 100m.  All the existing services such as pipes, sewers, electric cables etc., which are met with in foundation trenchesshall becarefullysupportedandprotectedbycontractorasperinstructionoftheengineer.
  • 6.  The excavation shall be measured as per exact length and width of the lowest step of footings accordingtodrawing.  The rate of excavation includes all timbering and other supports which are necessary for securing the sidesofthetrenchesandthecontractorshall beresponsiblefortheirsafety.  Noextraamountshallbepaidtothecontractorfortheexcavationoftheworkingspace.  Thematerialorvaluablefoundduringexcavationshall bethepropertyoftheowner.
  • 7. SPECIFICATION FOR MARBLE FLOORING Quality of marble - samples –anchors and dowels –vertical and horizontal surfaces – workmanship –finishing –measurement.  The marble to be used for the work shall be first class quality, free from cracks, non porous, uniform in colourandcarefullyselectedso astopresent harmoniousveins throughoutthefinished work.  The samples of each type to be used shall be submitted to show the full range of variation and the work shall becompletedwith marblesin accordancewiththeapprovedsamplebytheengineer.  All necessary bronzeorbrassanchors ,dowels,clamps,wires etc,requiredtosecurethe marblesin place shall havetobeprovidedbythe contractorandbuiltin atnoextracosttotheowner.  Nomarbleshallbefacescrew.
  • 8.  The vertical work commencing at floor level shall be allowed to set before the flooring is laid and the marbleshall extendabout25mm belowthefinishedfloorlevel.  The vertical and horizontal surfaces shall be laid in cement mortar (1:3) and the joints shall be finished withwhitecement.  The vertical marble shall be machine polished in the workshop and the hzl marbles shall be machine polished afterlaying.  The marble for dado and skirting shall be set in non staining white cement and of height described in drawing.  Theskirtingshallbe plain,roundedorofbevelled edges.  Marbleworkshall becarriedoutin thebestworkmanshipmanner.  All necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent staining or discolouration of marble surface due to anymaterialusedin setting.
  • 9.  All joints shallshow perfectalignment ofsurfaceandshall begroutedtomatchthecolourofmarble.  All marble work shall be covered or finished with wax or other protective material as may be necessary when set.  The payment shall be made for the actual work done on site on superficial area basis and no extra amountshall bepaidforwastageofmaterials,anchors,dowels,etc,  The rate of the marble work shall include any drilling, cutting, fitting or making any special provisions requiredin themarblework.
