4. Introduction
Community is a part of the society and education is the counterpart of
both the community and school .School is the social institution where
consciously designed learning experiences are provided with the objectives of
achieving social aim at large, over a period of time school is also defined as a
subsystem of the larger system of the society. It has to functionally coordinate
with its immediate encuronment, the community in which it is situated.
The community is meant to employ a wider grouping of people located
within fairly recognizable boundaries and related to each other by socio –
economic and civic activities which produce oneness among them sufficient
to develop a recognizable identity as a group .The main group and agents
involved in the dynamics of the relationship between school & community are
school administration, teachers, non teaching staff, students & parents,
governing bodies and school board.
Relation with school & community
Beyond immediate proximity with the schools are the local
political authorities, governmental bodies and political parties as well as other
public, social & cultural institutions. Parent’s are always in a constant touch
with the school and are proper channel of the procedure which is the part of
the community.
Though parents meetings in a school is informal of the general ignorance
of people in a village regarding keeping their immediate surrounding clean
staff members can take up this as a serious can take up this as a serious
mission./Hence , parents are a counterpart of the school subsystem.
5. Every school should be a model home, complete community actively
developing future compassionate citizens capable of creating, leading and
contributing to the kind of democratic communities – in which we all long to
live.
No matter the size of the school, collaborative teams of knowledgeable
teachers – the insiders” -are the ones who try to listen daily to the voices of
learners, who are aware of moment – to – moment interaction trust rations,
hopes and levels of student’s learning .They and knowledgeable school
leaders are the experts who best can transform their own school into authentic
learning communities that ready today’s youth for this 21st
century Era of
learning .Schools and the community partner effectively, children and young
people’s life and learning outcomes improve. In school, however, it is also
important for students to have time to relax and play.
Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities are activities that are not a part of the regular
curriculum .Often these activities take place before or after school however
sometimes they will take place during school time, such as during a lunch
break. Many activities are open to all students, and teachers volunteer to
supervise and facilitate the activity .participating in these activities is
voluntary .Some examples of extracurricular activities or clubs include drama,
debate, student government, music, art, student newspapers, music, art,
student sports and chess. Getting involved in extracurricular activities is an
opportunity for students to make new friends, explore new interests, and learn
new skills.
6. Field Trips
Field trips, also known as school trips, refer to learning activities students
do as a class, outside of the regular school environment. It provides students
with a learning opportunity different from their everyday classroom lessons.
On field trips, students are able to apply some of the lesson they are learning
in class to the outside world especially community.
Every school should have three types of information about the community it
serves.
Information about the composition of the community, such as the income,
educational level & occupations of the majority of the residents is useful in
formulating new programs or adapting existing ones to meet student’s
particular needs.
The school should know that community opinion is regarding both broad
educational issues and the day to day operation of the school itself.
The school should also have some familiarity with the educational
resources available in the community in order that they can be utilized to
enrich & enhance the school program.
Bringing the community to the school
Some of the importance means of bringing the community to the school are
given below:
Celebration of Festivals:
Our festivals are the visible embodiments of our culture. They form an
integral part of community life. They can be exploited for enriching
educational programmes and activities in schools.
7. I Religious festivals such as Shiva Rathri, Durga Ashtami, Id, Moharaam
Easter, Christmas etc
ii Cultural festivals of national and international importance such as Onam,
Christmas, Holi, Deepavali and Dussehra.
iii National festivals such as Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi
Jayanthi etc.
iv Celebrations of the birthdays of National religious and political leaders
such as Budha,Shankara,Sri Narayana ,Nehru , Netaji, Tilak,Bhagat singh
etc.
2 The school as a social, recreational and cultural centre:
As most of the village schools are the only common
meeting place in the villages, the cultural, physical and social activities in
such localities should be planned, organized and held in the school as a joint
venture of the public, the staff and the pupils. In this way, social service
activities such as health and education weeks can be organized in the schools.
Religious discourses, national celebrations, etc will attract members of the
community to the school.
3 Adult Education Centre:
The schools should become centers of adult education both in
rural and urban areas. They should conduct regular campaigns against
illiteracy and educate the adults of the locality. Students should also be
associated in this work.
4 School Library;
Efforts should be made to extend the services of the school
library to the community and this may take many forms:
i Issuing of books to parents and together members of the family in the
name and responsibility of the pupils
8. ii Opening of school library for public use before and after school hours, on
holidays and during vacations.
iii Giving a room to some social service organization for keeping books.
This may be used by the community as a library.
iv Issuing of books to the secretary of the old students association, who may
act as librarian to the old students and be held responsible for returning the
books to the school
Experience of the Members of the public: Various resource visitors may be
invited to the school and made to give out their experiences in various walks
of life and thus e3nrich the general knowledge of the pupils. What we would
like to see is a two-way traffic, thus observed the secondary Education
Commission. Interested members of the community engaged in various useful
vocations and professions, may be invited to the school from time to time to
talk about their vocation.
Parent – Teachers Association:
There should be a parent- teachers association in the school
which will help all concerned to understand each other’s point of view and will
enable them to learn to co-operatein the common task of giving a better, more
rational and more sympathetic deal to the children.
Exhibition:
On occasions like the school day, an exhibition may be arranged for
the benefit of the students and the public. This school exhibition may consist
of two sections namely;
1. Meeting with the parents of children of a particular class: the parents of children of
one particular class at a time may be invited to have a general discussion with
9. the teachers in charge of various subjects in that class. Discussion may centre
around the quality of academic performance, projects under taken by the
class, progress of children’s programmes like medical examination and
various other matters directly pertaining to the welfare of the children
2. Inviting parents to witness talents and proficiencies displayed by children’s in various
field: proficiency gained by a child in a particular game or special aptitude
shown at a particular co- curricular activity may be brought to the notice of
the parents
Career conferences:
This was just mentioned earlier .Career conferences may be organized
and the parents asked to attend them. Specialists in different fields may be
selected from amongst the parents also, if such persons are available and their
talks arranged on the various aspects of their occupations.
Association of the parents in the management of the
school:
Parents may be associated with the managing committee of the
school concerned. There can be no other person more interested in the proper
management of a school than the parents of the pupils.
Educational Conferences:
Educational conferences should be organized in which parents; teachers
and representatives of the education department participate. These
conferences help exchange of thoughts, opinions, expericnces, stock taking of
the past and planning for the future.
Making the school a centre of community service :
National, social and cultural functions should be organized into school
and the parents invited to attend them .School library may be thrown open to
the parents .Labor weeks may be organized where in students render social
service to the community.
10. Celebrations of parent’s days:
It may be a full working day. The parents may be taken round the school
so that they may see how the classes are held and where their taken round the

sit.Actual teaching done in the class may be shown to them.
CONCLUSION
Schools are the back bone of all community. The functioning of the
school is directly affects the society. Pupils are the nation builders with the
support of schools and teachers. They can create a well efficient community
through their education. So schools and community have an equal
participation for develop the nation.
