Bridge Program JOIN BRIDGE AND CHANGE YOUR FUTURE WHY SHOULD YOU GET INVOLVED?
Bridge Program ABOUT BRIDGE Bridge (Puente, in USA) is an academic, counseling and mentoring program of support for students to build the skills necessary for success in both academic and career goals.  Students in Puente work closely with their counselor, English instructor and MENTOR to prepare for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students should be prepared to participate in the following components:   ENGLISH INSTRUCTION:  As Puente students in USA, our Bridge students will take two English classes, one each semester. These classes stimulate and build Bridge students' confidence in reading, critical thinking, and writing skills through an exploration of multicultural literature which incorporates all Indian multi cultural experiences.   COUNSELING: As in USA, here Bridge students take two Guidance classes and work closely with their Bridge counselor until they graduate, exploring career options, developing an academic educational plan and identifying lifetime goals. Students visit Universities in Andhra Pradesh and attend a statewide annual Counseling and Transfer Conference.

A program to develop critical reading and 	writing skills. 3.	 A program to support students in developing 	personal and life-long goals. 4. 	A program to expose students to real life 	career opportunities.
Bridge Program What are you asked to do in the Bridge Program? 1.  	Enroll in Bridge English courses for two semesters to 	develop critical reading and writing skills necessary 	to succeed in a college or university. 2.  	Enroll in Bridge Guidance courses for two semesters 	to develop self-confidence, essential study skills and 	knowledge of educational requirements necessary 	for transfer. 3.  	Participate in Bridge Mentoring for two semesters 	with professional, volunteer mentors who will provide 	you with support and professional networking 	opportunities. 4.  	Participate in Bridge Educational, Career, & Cultural 	Activities each semester to expose you to academic, 	career and community resources
Bridge Program HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN PUENTE (BRIDGE) What should you ask yourself before you get started? 1.  Will I embrace and commit to all components of the program (i.e., classes, mentoring, trips, activities)? 2.  Do I have the time to participate in activities that take place in the evening, overnight or on Saturdays? 3.  Am I able to take both Puente (Bridge) classes in the fall and the spring? 4.  Am I able to stay in the program for the full year?

Bridge Program ABOUT BRIDGE   ENGLISH INSTRUCTION:  As Puente students in USA, our Bridge students will take two English classes, one each semester. These classes stimulate and build Bridge students' confidence in speaking, reading, critical thinking, and writing skills.      ENGLISH  I35 A: Low Intermediate Listening and Speaking  (36 hours) This course is designed for Non-English medium students.  Course focus is on casual and  formal dialogues in common place situations, everyday language functions and conversation skills.  Students learn common courtesy expression strategies, idiomatic expressions and grammatical patterns in English.   ENGLISH  I35 B: High Intermediate Listening and Speaking (36 hours) This course focuses on speaking and listening skillsfor students at high intermediate level of English.  Students practice a variety of conversational and listening strategies and engage in discussions.  Through role play and simulation exercises, students learn to express the options and agreements.

Students write short compositions on familiar topics.  They learn to apply principles of grammar as they write.     ENGLISH  I37 B: High Intermediate Writing and Grammar  (36 hours) This course helps students at the high intermediate level develop writing and grammar skills appropriate for educational and personal success.  Students write short compositions on familiar topics.  They learn to apply principles of grammar as they write.
Bridge Program ABOUT BRIDGE COUNSELING: As in USA, here Bridge students take two Guidance classes and work closely with their Bridge counselor until they graduate, exploring career options, developing an academic educational plan and identifying lifetime goals. Students visit Universities in Andhra Pradesh and attend a statewide annual Counseling and Transfer Conference.   Guidance 150: College Success		(12 hours) This course provides an introduction to methods of effective study, including analysis of current skill, principals of learning and application of learning techniques, text book study, note taking, and exam taking strategies.   Guidance 156: Self-Esteem			(18 hours) A personal development course focusing on the genesis of self-esteem.  This personal development course focuses on specific ideas and techniques to overcome negative feeling such as loneliness, guild, depression, and inferiority.  Students will develop a personal value system that leads to greater happiness and productivity.
Bridge Program ABOUT BRIDGE   Guidance 200: Career and Life Planning		(24 hours) This group guidance course is designed to assist students in the career and life planning process through consideration of individual needs, personality, interests, abilities, and values.  Emphasis will be placed on assessment, career research, goal setting, and decision making   Guidance 201: First Year Experience		(36 hours) This comprehensive course integrates personal growth, academic and career success with problem solving, critical and creative thinking.  The course focuses on the following topics: Life management, goal setting, career decision making educational planning college requirements and expectations, instructor-student interaction, cultural diversity, health maintenance, stress management, campus resources, learning styles, and strategies including lecture note-taking, test taking, and concentration.
Bridge Program ABOUT BRIDGE MENTORING: Each BRIDGE student is matched with a MENTOR from the business, academic or professional community of interest. MENTORS share with students their personal, academic and career experiences, and thereby provide a window into "real-life" work environments. The network of trained Bridge MENTORS provides many resources for the Puente students, their families, their colleges, and the community.   RESULTS (USA):  As a result of Puente's success, the program has increased to include 95 community colleges and high schools throughout the state making The Puente Project a successful vehicle for social change among historically marginalized communities. Puente community college students transfer to four-year colleges and universities at greater rates (47%) than their peers (27%)[1].  Puente high school students consistently graduate at greater rates (88%) than their peers (69%)[2] and enroll at four-year colleges and universities at twice the rate of matched controls.[3]
Bridge Program TYPES OF ACTIVITIES DO STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN Students are encouraged and required to take part in individual and group activities that will expose them to new experiences and offer opportunities to develop leadership and networking skills. These experiences not only provide students a way to get to know each other outside of the classroom, they also offer students unique ways of connecting with mentors and community leaders.

Puente community college students transfer to four-year colleges and universities at greater rates (47%) than their peers (27%)[1].  Puente high school students consistently graduate at greater rates (88%) than their peers (69%)[2] and enroll at four-year colleges and universities at twice the rate of matched controls.[3]

Bridge Program TYPES OF ACTIVITIES DO STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN Students are encouraged and required to take part in individual and group activities that will expose them to new experiences and offer opportunities to develop leadership and networking skills. These experiences not only provide students a way to get to know each other outside of the classroom, they also offer students unique ways of connecting with mentors and community leaders.

Bridge Program TYPES OF ACTIVITIES DO STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN Special Activities - The Puente Program coordinates special activities each semester to welcome mentors, new students and their families into what we consider a family environment. At the beginning of the semester, new mentors and students meet for the first time at the "Student/Mentor Match Dinner". Later in the semester, students are asked to invite their mentor and families to the "Family and Friends Potluck".  The "End of Semester Recognition Dinner" offers administrators and friends of the program an opportunity to honor both students and mentors for their participation in the program.
  • 25. Bridge Program TYPES OF ACTIVITIES DO STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN College Tours - Each year the Bridge Program coordinates a trip to visit various local private and government colleges.In the Summer of each year, students travel to various Andhra Pradesh State University campuses.

The Puente Club officers will take the lead in facilitating these activities and all Puente students are encouraged to participate.
