stresses most high school student out is picking and choosing what they are going to do after
high school and what college they will be going to if any. People a little bit older after college could
be stressed by trying to find a job or trying to find or support a family. Older people could be stressed
if they are running out of money but besides that older people are probably the least stressful people
in are population.

Persuasive Essay On Stress Management
Due to the hectic pace of modern day living stress is becoming more and more commonplace among
both adults and adolescents. Stress can be brought on by a number of different factors and at any
moment in time.
Some of the more common reasons for a person feeling stressed and anxious are career related
issues and family issues although these are just two examples of a long list of possible reasons.
For many stress is an everyday occurrence, it's quite simply the bodies way of sending out warning
signals when you're feeling under pressure, a coping mechanism so to speak.
It's important to take the necessary steps for dealing with stress as it affects both your mental and
physical well–being. Although you'll never completely eliminate stress from your life there are a
few simple stress management techniques that will help you deal with it more effectively.
The following are four simple and effective stress management techniques you can start applying
today to help you deal with your stress and anxiety.
Identifying the root cause of your stress
One of the root causes of stress and anxiety is "habitually" worrying anything and everything!
This is understandable as some may have demanding jobs or loved ones to tend to around the clock.
However, continually worrying resolves nothing and will affect your ability to get through the day.
Learn to identify your worries and combat them, this is very much a mental process but essential to

Stress Management
Stress management is something we as people should take a lot more seriously than we really do.
Whenever I tell someone that they need to learn how to control their stress they always tell me they
need their stress. They are right, they do need their stress, we all need a certain amount of stress in
our lives. No stress is almost just as unhealthy as too much stress. Just the right amount of stress is
called Eustress. Eustress is a healthy stressor because it helps to keep us motivated. Unhealthy
stress is called Distress. Distress is unhealthy because it can cause all sorts of health problems such
as anxiety attacks or high blood pressure. There are two different kinds of stressors, an internal
stressor and an...show more content...
 Exercise regularly
Nothing beats aerobic exercise for relieving stress. The stress reaction in the body consists of
tightened muscles, increased heart rate, Increased blood pressure, and heavier breathing . The
result is our bodies go into a state of high energy but there is usually no place for that energy to go.
Exercise is the most logical way to dissipate this excess energy. In turn relieving stress.
 Humor
"Humor is the best medicine." Laughter reduces the heart rate and arterial blood pressure to below
their original levels and causes the chest, abdomen, and shoulder muscles to contract, thus providing
release from stress. Do the quiz in one of my humor potential quiz books located in the back of this
report to test yourself and see if you should be laughing more than you do.  Realistic
Expectations
A common source of stress is unrealistic expectations. People often become upset about something
not because it is innately stressful but because it is not what they expected. For example, If you
get caught in slow moving traffic during rush hour you may not like it but it won't surprise you or
necessarily upset you. However if it occurs on a Sunday afternoon it is more than likely to stress
you out considerably. When expectations are realistic life seems more predictable and therefore
more manageable because you can plan ahead and prepare yourself. As for

Stress And Stress Management Strategies Essay
Stress Management Strategy Stress is a factor that will show up in every single person's life
every now and then. Even though there are many are many adaptation strategies to cope with
stressors, the best strategy will always be prevention. Since it is better to avoid bad outcomes
before they happen, preventing stress is better than trying to control it once it is activated.
"Stress prevention is basically about cultivating a balanced perspective towards one 's life and
place within the world." (Mills, 2008). Stress prevention may be personalized depending on
every person's ability to cope with stress, but there are five general strategies that will contribute
the necessary tools to avoid stressors. First of all, it is important to identify what are the main
things that causes you to stress. For some people this may be an easy task, being as simple as
identifying that extra work hours may cause you to feel overwhelmed and upset. For some people
it may be harder, due to many different reasons such as introversion or difficulty to express in
someone's personality. In order to be able to recognize stressors, important to identify whether the
reasons are internal or external. There are some habits that may help you recognize stressors, such as
writing down in a journal every time a stressful situation comes up. Once the stressors have been
recognized, it is important to avoid unnecessary stress. Many people worry about things they cannot
change, and that is just an extra

Reflective Essay On Stress Management
I will be discussing 3 specific personal strategies that I will use to improve stress and time
management.
Upon reading the article on Stress Management, I realized that procrastination can definitely
cause stress in my life, unwanted and unnecessary stress. For years I have been in a fight with
procrastination. I am ashamed to say that I have identified this issue a long time ago and have
done nothing to get rid of it. I am even more ashamed to say that about 90% of time
procrastination wins. Whether it be a simple wash the bathroom now or no more movies, not to
mention take out the garbage now, I allow procrastination to win. I will always say, I can do it later
or I have time. This is a negative factor that affects Time and Stress Management.
I am happy to admit that over the past year I have grown a lot with managing this issue. I accept
the responsibilities of the things I need to do and take charge. I say more 'yes/okay' rather than 'I
will do it later'. This is one way that I have been strategizing and will continue to do so; say 'No' to
Procrastination and 'Yes' to what I have to do. I AVOID Procrastination with this method.
Ever since I started this University, I have started setting schedules, using Google calender. I have
gotten this great opportunity to continue my studies and get a higher education and I am definitely
not going to want it to pass me by. I have started with the schedules and sadly, I haven't done any for
the last few weeks and that again is

Stress
Stress is normal. It happens to everyone, and affects everyone differently. It is a feeling of being
overwhelmed for handling things you aren't used to. Stress is also known as a response or
something that changes in the body caused by emotions, social, physical, or economical issues
which can cause tension mentally and physically. It can be caused by external or internal situations.
What's known as the "fight or flight" response, is initiated when an individual becomes stressed. It is
the complex response of the neurologic and endocrinologic systems. Stress management includes
pharmacological and nonpharmacological elements, and was found to be an effective treatment
method for treating stress.

You also shouldn't judge yourself too harshly. Don't try so hard to be perfect, people are not meant
to be that way. By managing your stress, you can avoid becoming burned out and affecting people
around you.
Remember to NEVER take your stress out on the residents. No matter how bad your situation is,
personal matters cannot affect your job. Stress can also be from caregiving. Being a caregiver can
be an amazing experience, but also challenging. Women are more at risk for heart diseases and
harmful effects from stress involving health than men are. These effects stress can cause could lead
to many different medical conditions including psychological conditions like anxiety and depression.
Families who have had to take care of their elders have been reported to having higher levels of
stress rather than people who don't. As people who will be taking care of these residents' families,
we need to keep in mind that it may not be easy for them. We may be stressed out about something
not concerning a resident, and the family may take your actions to heart. If you bring your personal
problems to work, this could lead to neglect and upset the family.
The effects of stress are not only overwhelming for us, as the caregivers, but also the residents. The
elders may have poorly controlled diabetes, high blood pressure, slow healing, uncomfortable bowel
movements, and

Responses to stressors present different impacts on each individual. Stressors have a physical and
psychological effect on people although some people seem to be much less effected by stress being
able to withstand high levels of stress almost as if there daily lives depend on it. Even though it is
accepted stress is with us from are waking moment to the minute we sleep, almost all individuals

Here we will look at the different approaches plus the strengths and weaknesses of these methods.
PHYSICAL METHOD OF STRESS MANAGEMENT.
Drugs.
Strengths.
Prescribed drug treatment seems to be the strongest source of psychological stress control. Anti
depressants and BZs are prescribed to reduce the feelings of anxiety or depression induced through
stress induced illness. The effect of the drugs is simple; they suitably block or reduce the activity
of the brains neurotransmitter for release of serotonin, or directly reduce activity in the pathways
leading to the nervous system around the body, not allowing blood pressure or the heart rate to rise,
as it is these bodily systems that influence the feelings of anxiety. Once blocked or suppressed the
individual when faced with a stressor will feel much calmer and able to cope with the unwanted
stressor presented to them.
Weaknesses.
All drugs present side effects which are usually unpleasant. Most common side effects are nausea,
dizziness and stomach upset. Other side effects experienced are drowsiness and subdued
awareness, these are more serious side effects which can cause a threat to personal safety whilst
driving or if you are in a job that requires you to operate machinery. Drugs only treat the physical
feelings experienced from stress and not the psychological cause so also

Reflection On Stress Management
Journal Reflection Coping and adapting to a new environment can be challenging and stressful for
some people. Being an international and graduate student at the same time, I consistently feel
stressed out and find it hard to cope with the new environment. Therefore, I decided to establish
stress management techniques that could help me achieve a healthy lifestyle and overcome any
anxiety I face throughout the day. During the last five weeks, I have been trying to adopt a new
health behavior by implementing some stress–relieving techniques. These techniques are a
10–minute activity/2–3 times a day, including walking around the neighborhood, practicing
concentrated breathing, listening to stress relieving music, doing some home chores, or just taking
a shower. Basically, any activity that can drive my attention away from the stressor and be fully
engaged in that behavior. There are several theories that I came across that have helped me
understand how individuals can accomplish a particular behavior. One theory is the Health Belief
Model, which focuses on the attitudes and beliefs of people about a particular health behavior. In
my case, it helped me shift my mindset to focus on my perceptions to make stress management
behavior change more feasible. The most influential constructs of this model are the perceived
benefits, perceived barriers, self–efficacy, and cues to action. First, the perceived benefits, I started
with a list of stress–management health benefits that

The Importance of Stress Management Essay
The Importance of Stress Management
Stress today can be described as "that which disturbs a person's mental and physical well–being"
(Morrison 1). Common symptoms of stress include chronic fatigue, changes in appetite, drug and/or
alcohol abuse, difficulty sleeping, body aches, and changes in emotions (Cooper 1–2). And although
stress is something that is inevitable, it can be controlled. Just about everything we do today creates
stress, both good and bad. In the face paced and technological world we live in, stress management is
key to survival as well as sanity.
Stress can be caused from numerous things for example, a death in the family, divorce, or loss of a
job. But stress is also attributed to...show more content...
Stress is not only affecting individuals, but also affects how are businesses function and how our
society operates (Morrison 1).
Stress can cause many things that affect a healthy body. Stress causes quick yet shallow
breathing in which case, the body's cells are being deprived of oxygen. Stress will increase
cholesterol levels and can also cause indigestion, heartburn, a decreased sex drive, and also
arteriosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries). While these symptoms may seem minimal, stress
can decrease the activity of white blood cells. Since the white blood cells fight off sicknesses and
diseases, the immune system is affected by stress and can make the body more susceptible to colds,
viruses, flues, and diseases (Morrison 2).
Stress can affect all aspects of one's mind and body. Behaviorally, stress can cause anger, excessive
crying, depression, apprehension, increased alcohol use, mood swings, and even suicide. It can
cause problems physically as well. Anorexia, fatigue, trembling, loss of appetite, and headaches are
just a few of the symptoms that overly stressed individuals may experience (Morrison 2).
It is critical to understand important stress management skills. If stress is not dealt with, it can result
in a burnout, or perhaps worse, "People who experience high levels of anxiety are four to five times
more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke" (Morrison

After learning about stress in this class my understanding is that, stress symptoms may be affecting

sometimes stress is to blame. Indeed, stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and
feelings, and your behavior. There is a long list of serious health problems that may develop due to

motivated. If I am not organized it is a huge stressor for me. When I stay motivated I accomplish a
lot more things in one day, which in return is a huge stress relief. Some areas that I show room for
improvement are I need to set more weekly or monthly goals for myself instead of just long term
goals, by doing this I believe I would feel more accomplished. Another area of improvement for
me is I need to have more trust for my boyfriend. Forgive, forget and move on. One last
improvement would be to improve my level of self discipline. The topics I related to the most or the
ones that I was most interested in were body awareness, breathing exercises, the worry and anxiety
chapter, goal setting, and time management. I really enjoyed the body awareness exercises because
it recognizes that when stressed the body automatically tenses. Our muscles become hard, tight
and tense. Holding this tension is very tiring, and hence, a feeling of fatigue can occur. If the
muscular tension has no release, because of the constant stress levels and not knowing how to
relax your muscles can cause strain on your body. After doing this exercise in the book I was able to
recognize what tense muscles felt and looked like and what relaxed muscles felt and looked like. So

Stress is defined as "any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one's well–being
and thereby tax one's coping abilities" (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 72). Stress is a natural event
that exists literally in all areas of one's life. It can be embedded in the environment, culture, or
perception of an event or idea. Stress is a constant burden, and can be detrimental to one's physical
and mental health. However stress can also provide beneficial effects; it can satisfy one's need for
stimulation and challenge, promote personal growth, and can provide an individual with the tools
to cope with, and be less affected by tomorrow's stress (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 93). When
stressful events occur three types of responses take...show more content...
Both aggression and self indulgence are harmful and have negative effects both psychologically
and physiologically. Positive coping strategies, or constructive coping, refer to strategies that are
healthy when dealing with stress. Constructive coping strategies involve realistic appraisals of the
situation, directly confronting the situation, organizing and managing the potentially disruptive
emotional reactions to stress, and exerting some control over the negative habitual behaviors
(Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 114). In order to effectively manage stress an individual must first
accurately identify the sources of the stress. Psychological tests such as the Social Readjustment
Rating Scale (SRRS), or the Life Experiences Survey (LES), can aid in identifying the extent in
which events or situations that are perceived as stressful. The SRRS test measures life change as
a form of stress. Values are assigned to 43 major life events that reflect the degree of the
readjustment required by each change (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006). A high score on the SRRS
indicates that the individual is more vulnerable to physical and psychological illnesses. However the
SRRS fails to account for many variables such as individual perception of the event or neuroticism.
The stressful events depicted in the SRRS are ambiguous, which lowers the reliability of the test.
Alternatively the LES was designed to address the problems with

"Symptoms of stress appear in many forms. Some symptoms only affect the person who is directly
experiencing stress. Other symptoms may have an impact on our relationships with others." (Archer

of symptoms one encounters with stress. The first symptom that one might face deals with the
physical aspect of their body.
Have you ever worked on a project that gave you a headache after much thought? One might face
this physical symptom. Muscular tensions, colds, ulcers and high blood pressure are but a few
physical symptoms of stress (Archer & Carroll, 2003). Next are the emotional symptoms.
Have you ever reached a point mentally where you were so overwhelmed you felt you could not go

Essay Conclusion On Stress
Introduction
Stress is a normal reaction to life events. It is what you feel when life demands more than you are
used to or more than you can handle. Some stress can be useful. For example, the stress reaction
can help you catch the last bus of the day, study for a test, or meet a deadline at work. But stress
that occurs too often or for too long can cause problems. It can affect your emotional health and
interfere with relationships and normal daily activities. Too much stress can weaken your immune
system and increase your risk for physical illness. If you already have a medical problem, stress can
make it worse.

Coping with Stress Essay
Stress is part of our lives. We live with it, deal with it, and above all worry about it. Our way of life,
the area in which we live, the economy, and our jobs can cause a great deal of stress. Not everyone
deals with the same level of stress and there are several factors that can impact our lives and cause us
to have higher or lower stress levels. We can have stress caused by Cataclysmic events which
according to Feldman (2009) are events that can affect many people at the same time and are
"disasters such as tornado and plane crashes, as well as terrorist attacks". (p418). Other factors are
personal stressors and can be caused by events such as a divorce, death or a loved one or the loss of
a job. (Feldman, 2009). The...show more content...
These are stressors we live with and deal with on a daily basis.
Work Stress and Mental Health Some people have higher levels of stress because they might have
a very stressful job. Police officers, fire fighters, soldiers in a war zone, health care providers,
long distance truck drivers, and yes, even educators (think of a classroom full of students where
you are responsible for making sure that they are learning the skills they need to succeed) have
very stressful jobs. According to Elkin and Rosch (1990) workplace related stress in a major
problem in the U.S. and it creates a major expense for corporations. Koeske, Kirk, and Koeske
(1993) indicate that all jobs have some level of stress but jobs that are in the human services have
additional stressors because they "derive from intense involvement in the lives of others".
(p.319). They also refer to the type of stress experienced by individuals working in human
services as "burnout" (Koeske, Kirk, and Koeske, 1993, p.319). Another factor that can influence
our stress level is how we handle life's demands. There are different ways of reacting to the situations
we face every day of our lives. We have all heard of expressions such as 'road rage' and 'going postal'.
These are terms that we have come to identified with violent reactions to stressors caused by
situations all of us face every day. How many of us have experiences in the road that

last couple of decades. It has become a major concern among various organizations creating an
impact on the management and operations of the organization. This paper will give a detailed
definition of what stress in the workplace is and the most common causes of stress amongst both
employers and employees. In the midst of investigating the causes of stress, I will give an outline of
what can be done to manage the stress by not only the individual but also by the employers
themselves.
I will also mention the effects of stress to an individual, which can be categorized as short–term
effects both psychological and...show more content...
In the United States, the American Institute of Stress (AIS) has estimated that 40% of the worker
turnover is due to stress and the cost of stress in the workplace has been estimated to be over
$300 billion per year. However, the ability of employers to lower the rate of stress in the workplace
has shown to improve the employee's quality of work and their health (Lee 36).
Causes of stress in the workplace
There are a variety of different causes of stress in the workplace and an ability to identify these as

the workers about changes in the business or the technology they are using in their systems which
can cause tension and uncertainty. Because of this, the worker can feel a constant fear of losing their
position if they do not work efficiently and understand the new changes in the organization.
Another cause of stress is a change in the workplace environment. As an

Satish Chandra Pandey (8m Journal, JIMS April–June 1997) has given some valid points on
managing stress, some of which are as follows–
1. Develop training programs for executives and other staff members for their total personality
development based on Indian values, so that they can develop their own strategies for coping with
their organizational environment/stressors.
2. Each organization must develop its own management philosophy based on Indian values and
educate its employees about that philosophy to motivate them for achieving excellence in different

3. Organizations must know that reducing organizational stress is as important as motivating

  • 9. Reflective Essay On Stress Management I will be discussing 3 specific personal strategies that I will use to improve stress and time management. Upon reading the article on Stress Management, I realized that procrastination can definitely cause stress in my life, unwanted and unnecessary stress. For years I have been in a fight with procrastination. I am ashamed to say that I have identified this issue a long time ago and have done nothing to get rid of it. I am even more ashamed to say that about 90% of time procrastination wins. Whether it be a simple wash the bathroom now or no more movies, not to mention take out the garbage now, I allow procrastination to win. I will always say, I can do it later or I have time. This is a negative factor that affects Time and Stress Management. I am happy to admit that over the past year I have grown a lot with managing this issue. I accept the responsibilities of the things I need to do and take charge. I say more 'yes/okay' rather than 'I will do it later'. This is one way that I have been strategizing and will continue to do so; say 'No' to Procrastination and 'Yes' to what I have to do. I AVOID Procrastination with this method. Ever since I started this University, I have started setting schedules, using Google calender. I have gotten this great opportunity to continue my studies and get a higher education and I am definitely not going to want it to pass me by. I have started with the schedules and sadly, I haven't done any for the last few weeks and that again is Get more content on HelpWriting.net

PHYSICAL METHOD OF STRESS MANAGEMENT. Drugs. Strengths. Prescribed drug treatment seems to be the strongest source of psychological stress control. Anti depressants and BZs are prescribed to reduce the feelings of anxiety or depression induced through stress induced illness. The effect of the drugs is simple; they suitably block or reduce the activity of the brains neurotransmitter for release of serotonin, or directly reduce activity in the pathways leading to the nervous system around the body, not allowing blood pressure or the heart rate to rise, as it is these bodily systems that influence the feelings of anxiety. Once blocked or suppressed the individual when faced with a stressor will feel much calmer and able to cope with the unwanted stressor presented to them. Weaknesses. All drugs present side effects which are usually unpleasant. Most common side effects are nausea, dizziness and stomach upset. Other side effects experienced are drowsiness and subdued awareness, these are more serious side effects which can cause a threat to personal safety whilst driving or if you are in a job that requires you to operate machinery. • 12. Reflection On Stress Management Journal Reflection Coping and adapting to a new environment can be challenging and stressful for some people. Being an international and graduate student at the same time, I consistently feel stressed out and find it hard to cope with the new environment. Therefore, I decided to establish stress management techniques that could help me achieve a healthy lifestyle and overcome any anxiety I face throughout the day. During the last five weeks, I have been trying to adopt a new health behavior by implementing some stress–relieving techniques. These techniques are a 10–minute activity/2–3 times a day, including walking around the neighborhood, practicing concentrated breathing, listening to stress relieving music, doing some home chores, or just taking a shower. Basically, any activity that can drive my attention away from the stressor and be fully engaged in that behavior. There are several theories that I came across that have helped me understand how individuals can accomplish a particular behavior. One theory is the Health Belief Model, which focuses on the attitudes and beliefs of people about a particular health behavior. In my case, it helped me shift my mindset to focus on my perceptions to make stress management behavior change more feasible. The most influential constructs of this model are the perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self–efficacy, and cues to action. First, the perceived benefits, I started with a list of stress–management health benefits that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. The Importance of Stress Management Essay The Importance of Stress Management Stress today can be described as "that which disturbs a person's mental and physical well–being" (Morrison 1). Common symptoms of stress include chronic fatigue, changes in appetite, drug and/or alcohol abuse, difficulty sleeping, body aches, and changes in emotions (Cooper 1–2). And although stress is something that is inevitable, it can be controlled. Just about everything we do today creates stress, both good and bad. Stress is not only affecting individuals, but also affects how are businesses function and how our society operates (Morrison 1). Stress can cause many things that affect a healthy body. Stress causes quick yet shallow breathing in which case, the body's cells are being deprived of oxygen. Stress will increase cholesterol levels and can also cause indigestion, heartburn, a decreased sex drive, and also arteriosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries). While these symptoms may seem minimal, stress can decrease the activity of white blood cells. Since the white blood cells fight off sicknesses and diseases, the immune system is affected by stress and can make the body more susceptible to colds, viruses, flues, and diseases (Morrison 2). Stress can affect all aspects of one's mind and body. Behaviorally, stress can cause anger, excessive crying, depression, apprehension, increased alcohol use, mood swings, and even suicide. It can cause problems physically as well. Anorexia, fatigue, trembling, loss of appetite, and headaches are just a few of the symptoms that overly stressed individuals may experience (Morrison 2). It is critical to understand important stress management skills. If stress is not dealt with, it can result in a burnout, or perhaps worse, "People who experience high levels of anxiety are four to five times more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke" (Morrison Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Stress Management Reflection Essay After learning about stress in this class my understanding is that, stress symptoms may be affecting your health, even though you might not realize it. You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent forgetfulness or your decreased productivity at work. But sometimes stress is to blame. Indeed, stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior. There is a long list of serious health problems that may develop due to stress. Some include depression, diabetes, hair loss, heart disease, high blood pressure, stomach upset, sleep problems, chest pain, back pain, obesity, obsessive–compulsive or anxiety disorder, sexual dysfunction, tooth and gum disease, ulcers, cancer. I believe my strengths are keeping organized and motivated. If I am not organized it is a huge stressor for me. When I stay motivated I accomplish a lot more things in one day, which in return is a huge stress relief. Some areas that I show room for improvement are I need to set more weekly or monthly goals for myself instead of just long term goals, by doing this I believe I would feel more accomplished. Another area of improvement for me is I need to have more trust for my boyfriend. Forgive, forget and move on. One last improvement would be to improve my level of self discipline. The topics I related to the most or the ones that I was most interested in were body awareness, breathing exercises, the worry and anxiety chapter, goal setting, and time management. I really enjoyed the body awareness exercises because it recognizes that when stressed the body automatically tenses. Our muscles become hard, tight and tense. Holding this tension is very tiring, and hence, a feeling of fatigue can occur. If the muscular tension has no release, because of the constant stress levels and not knowing how to relax your muscles can cause strain on your body. After doing this exercise in the book I was able to recognize what tense muscles felt and looked like and what relaxed muscles felt and looked like. So now when I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Stress Management Essay Stress is defined as "any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one's well–being and thereby tax one's coping abilities" (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 72). Stress is a natural event that exists literally in all areas of one's life. It can be embedded in the environment, culture, or perception of an event or idea. Stress is a constant burden, and can be detrimental to one's physical and mental health. However stress can also provide beneficial effects; it can satisfy one's need for stimulation and challenge, promote personal growth, and can provide an individual with the tools to cope with, and be less affected by tomorrow's stress (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 93). When stressful events occur three types of responses take...show more content... Both aggression and self indulgence are harmful and have negative effects both psychologically and physiologically. Positive coping strategies, or constructive coping, refer to strategies that are healthy when dealing with stress. Constructive coping strategies involve realistic appraisals of the situation, directly confronting the situation, organizing and managing the potentially disruptive emotional reactions to stress, and exerting some control over the negative habitual behaviors (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006, p. 114). In order to effectively manage stress an individual must first accurately identify the sources of the stress. Psychological tests such as the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS), or the Life Experiences Survey (LES), can aid in identifying the extent in which events or situations that are perceived as stressful. The SRRS test measures life change as a form of stress. Values are assigned to 43 major life events that reflect the degree of the readjustment required by each change (Weiten & Lloyd, 2006). A high score on the SRRS indicates that the individual is more vulnerable to physical and psychological illnesses. However the SRRS fails to account for many variables such as individual perception of the event or neuroticism. The stressful events depicted in the SRRS are ambiguous, which lowers the reliability of the test. Alternatively the LES was designed to address the problems with Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Our way of life, the area in which we live, the economy, and our jobs can cause a great deal of stress. Not everyone deals with the same level of stress and there are several factors that can impact our lives and cause us to have higher or lower stress levels. We can have stress caused by Cataclysmic events which according to Feldman (2009) are events that can affect many people at the same time and are "disasters such as tornado and plane crashes, as well as terrorist attacks". Police officers, fire fighters, soldiers in a war zone, health care providers, long distance truck drivers, and yes, even educators (think of a classroom full of students where you are responsible for making sure that they are learning the skills they need to succeed) have very stressful jobs. Causes of stress in the workplace There are a variety of different causes of stress in the workplace and an ability to identify these as an employer is important because it will help in knowing how to deal with and correct any problems arising from it. Most of the stresses are caused when the demands at work become extreme or excessive. Many of these demands are a direct result of technological advances that have made work processes easier but on the other hand, require employees to do more tasks. Current technology demands the workers to constantly perform near peak levels, be competitive and be cognizant of technological breakthroughs. In some circumstances, the organization fails to inform the workers about changes in the business or the technology they are using in their systems which can cause tension and uncertainty. Because of this, the worker can feel a constant fear of losing their position if they do not work efficiently and understand the new changes in the organization.
