Presidents
 There were two presidents during the 90’s, George
  Bush and Bill Clinton.
 President Bush oversaw the Invasion of Panama, the
Exxon Valdez oil spill, and the Break-up of the
  Soviet Union.
 Clinton was the first Democrat to win a second term
  in office since FDR.
 He backed the policy known as “Don’t ask, Don’t
Tell” which stated that no openly gay men could
  serve in the military.
Scandals
 In 1992, George Bush pardoned five high ranking
government officials who were convicted during the
Iran-Contra Affair. Their trials had not even begun,
but this pardon prevented anyone from investigating
  this matter any further.
 During his presidency, Bill Clinton was impeached
for perjury. He lied under oath about having sexual
relations with his intern. Despite these accusations,
Clinton was acquitted and was not removed as
  President.
Wars
 The Persian Gulf War, secretly named Operation
  Desert Storm, began in 1990.
 This war was in response to Iraq’s invasion of
  Kuwait.
 The American’s were later
forced to exit the war because
 they believed that Saddam
 Hussein would be taken over
  by a military coup de’tat

FASHION IS A GENERAL TERM FOR A POPULAR STYLE OR PRACTICE, ESPECIALLY IN
CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR, ACCESSORIES, MAKEUP, OR FURNITURE. "FASHION" REFERS
TO A DISTINCTIVE; HOWEVER, OFTEN-HABITUAL TREND IN A LOOK AND DRESS UP
OF A PERSON, AS WELL AS TO PREVAILING STYLES IN BEHAVIOR.

• Fashion in the 1990’s veered away from the luxury and glitz of the
1980’s in favor of more casual styles. In addition, businesses
    relaxed their dress codes.
 Individuality took on new importance in the 1990’s.
 Wide diversity of people from all levels of society, which led to a mixture
of competing and complementary clothing styles.
 Simplicity: was the slogan of the fashion scene.
 The 1990s in popular culture is typically referred to as the decade of "anti-
  fashion".
 Consumers were more interested in finding clothing that suited their
  lifestyle.
 The 1990 had two radical changes:
• The begining of the rejection of fashion
• Beginning of the adoption of tattoos and body piercings.
 Popularization of the casual chic look, including T-shirts, jeans and tennis
  shoes.
YOUTH STYLES:
 Raise of grunge fashion
• In favor of dark colors
• was a kind of revival of hippie fashion
• Sports appeal (baseball caps worn backward)
• Including in grunge fashion were: Doc Marten shoes and boots, high-top
sneakers, plaid flannel shirts, denim jackets and black-hooded sweatshirts.
 The preppy look made a comeback in 1997 among teenage males.
 Among girls spaghetti-strap tank tops became widely worn
 The oversized hip-hop look of baggy jeans and loose cargo pants became
  popular during the decade.
• Young girls imitating pop girls band like spice girls, wearing top that
    exposed the midriff.

 Hair coloring was widely popular
• Blond was a color of choice among the young
• Boys also turned to coloring their hair.
WOMEN’S FASHIONS:
 Power dressing, important to women in the 1980’s became softer in the
  1990’s
• Exagerated shoulder pads disappeared
• Clothes in general became less constrictive
 In the early 1990’s black became the dominant color in women’s clothing
• Some shades of brown and gray did become the “new black” for a few
seasons, but black always remained in style.
• Around this time in Europe and America it was also fashionable to dress
entirely in black or wear designer clothing displaying Italian or French
labels (such as Lacoste, Yves Saint-Laurent, Armani, Gucci, or Chanel) as a
way of demonstrating one's apparent social status and wealth.
 In 1997 feminine clothes in bright colors made a comeback. (lilac, shades
of purple, reds, lime green, turquoise).
 The classic blazer remained popular just in the early 1990’s fashion.
 Skirts, which had been long for most of the decade, grew shorter by the end
  of the 1990’s.
MEN'S FASHION
 In the early 1990s flannel became very popular and
lasted through most of the decade.
• the flannel shirts of the 1990s were padded and
loose-fitting for optimum warmth.
 Preppy clothing was popular in the US, where wealthy young men wore
khaki slacks, navy blue blazers and canvas boat shoes.
 Men also wore Converse All Stars, Acid wash denim jackets, straight-leg
jeans like Levi 501s, wool sweaters, black leather jackets, sheepskin coats,
Members Only jackets, polo shirts, white Adidas trainers and Aviator
  sunglasses.
 In America hip-hop fashion went mainstream, with oversized baseball
jackets, bomber jackets, Baja Jackets, gold jewellery, baggy carpenter
jeans, tracksuits and overalls popular among young men as casual wear.
 In America suits went out of fashion as men began to dress smart-casual
and business casual, a trend started by Bill Gates of Microsoft.
 At this time it became fashionable to leave shirts untucked.

  • 21. FASHION IS A GENERAL TERM FOR A POPULAR STYLE OR PRACTICE, ESPECIALLY IN CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR, ACCESSORIES, MAKEUP, OR FURNITURE. "FASHION" REFERS TO A DISTINCTIVE; HOWEVER, OFTEN-HABITUAL TREND IN A LOOK AND DRESS UP OF A PERSON, AS WELL AS TO PREVAILING STYLES IN BEHAVIOR. • Fashion in the 1990’s veered away from the luxury and glitz of the 1980’s in favor of more casual styles. In addition, businesses relaxed their dress codes.
  • 22.  Individuality took on new importance in the 1990’s.  Wide diversity of people from all levels of society, which led to a mixture of competing and complementary clothing styles.  Simplicity: was the slogan of the fashion scene.  The 1990s in popular culture is typically referred to as the decade of "anti- fashion".  Consumers were more interested in finding clothing that suited their lifestyle.  The 1990 had two radical changes: • The begining of the rejection of fashion • Beginning of the adoption of tattoos and body piercings.  Popularization of the casual chic look, including T-shirts, jeans and tennis shoes.
  • 23. YOUTH STYLES:  Raise of grunge fashion • In favor of dark colors • was a kind of revival of hippie fashion • Sports appeal (baseball caps worn backward) • Including in grunge fashion were: Doc Marten shoes and boots, high-top sneakers, plaid flannel shirts, denim jackets and black-hooded sweatshirts.  The preppy look made a comeback in 1997 among teenage males.  Among girls spaghetti-strap tank tops became widely worn  The oversized hip-hop look of baggy jeans and loose cargo pants became popular during the decade. • Young girls imitating pop girls band like spice girls, wearing top that exposed the midriff.  Hair coloring was widely popular • Blond was a color of choice among the young • Boys also turned to coloring their hair.
  • 24. WOMEN’S FASHIONS:  Power dressing, important to women in the 1980’s became softer in the 1990’s • Exagerated shoulder pads disappeared • Clothes in general became less constrictive  In the early 1990’s black became the dominant color in women’s clothing • Some shades of brown and gray did become the “new black” for a few seasons, but black always remained in style. • Around this time in Europe and America it was also fashionable to dress entirely in black or wear designer clothing displaying Italian or French labels (such as Lacoste, Yves Saint-Laurent, Armani, Gucci, or Chanel) as a way of demonstrating one's apparent social status and wealth.  In 1997 feminine clothes in bright colors made a comeback. (lilac, shades of purple, reds, lime green, turquoise).  The classic blazer remained popular just in the early 1990’s fashion.  Skirts, which had been long for most of the decade, grew shorter by the end of the 1990’s.
  • 25. MEN'S FASHION  In the early 1990s flannel became very popular and lasted through most of the decade. • the flannel shirts of the 1990s were padded and loose-fitting for optimum warmth.  Preppy clothing was popular in the US, where wealthy young men wore khaki slacks, navy blue blazers and canvas boat shoes.  Men also wore Converse All Stars, Acid wash denim jackets, straight-leg jeans like Levi 501s, wool sweaters, black leather jackets, sheepskin coats, Members Only jackets, polo shirts, white Adidas trainers and Aviator sunglasses.  In America hip-hop fashion went mainstream, with oversized baseball jackets, bomber jackets, Baja Jackets, gold jewellery, baggy carpenter jeans, tracksuits and overalls popular among young men as casual wear.  In America suits went out of fashion as men began to dress smart-casual and business casual, a trend started by Bill Gates of Microsoft.  At this time it became fashionable to leave shirts untucked.
