2. Pre-production
• What are you making? (explain what you have been asked to do)
• For my project I will be creating a photography magazine that draws larger audiences in that can inform them and influence
them to take an interest into the photography world. I want my magazine to be educational while also still being interesting
to read and look at, for the overall theme I am going to make it a monochromatic magazine as I think that this adds a twist
and separates it from other magazines out there. I am going to take a simplistic approach as I feel that this gives it a more
mature and sophisticated vibe and this will attract a wider audience if I keep it very minimalistic. In the magazine I will
showcase all my own photography and different edits while also including famous photographers articles and I think that this
will gain a larger interest to buy if I promote the use of a celebrity that is well known in the photography industry.
• Why? (What is the purpose of making your Film)
• I want to make a photography magazine to educate and attract a larger audience to the photography scene and the overall purpose of
creating this is to in the end sell it in the shops as I want to create something unique that draws peoples attention because they haven't
seen much else like it out there in the magazine business, by creating a magazine I get to use my own photography and showcase it in a
real life way (using a magazine) while also get to use my own editing skills in the magazine as well as writing and creating many
different articles about my work and just about photography in general, I want people to come away from reading my magazine to have
learned something while still enjoyed it.
• Who is it for? (Audience)
• For my magazine I have chosen to target an age range of 16-21 years as I feel that this is a wide range of ages that would benefit most
from my product I also think I have an advantage of choosing this age range as I myself am in this category therefore I will know what
attracts this audience more rather than if I chose an older age range. In my opinion I think that my magazine isn't really aimed towards
one type of person as it can be viewed and enjoyed by anyone and this is a factor that I enjoy about the thought of my magazine as
anyone can you use in whatever manner however they please.
• Where will it appear/on what? (How will audience see it)
• I will like to see my magazine being sold in many various different shops for example in local supermarkets as I think that this
will allow a wider range of people to see and actually want to purchase my magazine while also I want it to be sold in specific
stores that are related to the contents for example a photography camera store I would like the magazine to be promoted
there as people would be more willing to by it as they have gone into that store for a reason.
Reflection:
3. Style Sheet Fonts
I found this font on Dafont.com and I really like it as it keeps the calligraphy style font
that I like and that I am trying to achieve however it is still clear and more likely to be
used for the masthead on my magazine as it is clear and shows a hint if the style of the
magazine just from the masthead. I think that this font vibes a calm vibe with abit of a
mature feel. I think that I am likely to use this font as it ticks a lot of the boxes that I
am wanting from a font.
This font was deep down inside Dafont.com and I really like the overall appearance of
it as I think that it gives a very mature and sophisticated feel as it feels very
handwritten and homely and I think that if I used this it would draw the older
audience as it feel like text that you could really trust and enjoy the font.
I found this font on Dafont.com and I really like it as I think it still keeps in the
calligraphy theme while having a more bolder approach therefore I could see
myself using it in a sub header or maybe if I have a piece of text and information
that I want to be bolder and draw more attention.
I found this font on Dafont.com and I think that this is my overall favourite as it
combines all the three fonts that I previously found together to make the
perfect font as it has a nice hand written vibe which keeping a bold structure
which draws a lot of attention towards it and it is still clear to read and
understand. I will definitely use this in my actually work as I think that this is my
favourite so far, it also will appeal to all age ranges as it still keeps that
sophisticated theme while still looking calm and informative.
4. Style sheet colours
From these images we found out some information about the science
behind the colour wheel and how they really work together and what
to pair together for what style you are really going for. Analogous is
when the colours are adjacent to each other, complementary colours
are when the colours on the colour wheel are opposite each other and
I think I will use this approach as I want the colour scheme to be very
complementary on all of the other colours. A split complementary is
when the colours on the colour wheel are adjacent to your main
colours complimentary colour, finally one more colour scheme I will
most likely use is the monochromatic approach and for this you use
just one segment of the colour wheel while using a variation of
lightness and saturation. Finding out this information was very helpful
as I want my magazine to look overall pleasing to look at therefore
these small steps I can take to find out which colours I really should be
paring together.
5. Style sheet colours
This colour scheme is called Colourful and Balanced and I really enjoy the way that this
looks as they have used warm and cool hues are combined in this Colourful yet not
over the top pallet, from an appealing and bright turquoise-green to an earthy
terracotta, this colour scheme is well-suited for youthful and modern designs.
This colour scheme is called Bright Accent colours and I think that this works well
however I don’t think I could see myself using this purely because it doesn’t give the
right vibe and appeal as I am wanting to make. There is a clear contrast between the
vivid blue background and red- orange accents and this is very attention grabbing
however overall I think that this page seems very hectic and that there is a lot going on.
This colour scheme is called Natural and Earthy and I really enjoy the first impression of
this colour scheme as I feel that it comes across very relaxed and makes the viewer feel
like they are choosing to look at it as there is nothing pushing them to look at specific
bright parts. This colour scheme is very comforting and down to earth and I think that
this colour scheme would look good inside my magazine.
This colour scheme is called Cool and Fresh and I think that this is a good mix of colours
as on the one hand it has the cool and soft colours with a dark imperial blue mixed with
the emerald green creates a clean and new colour scheme. I think that this colour
scheme works well and I can picture myself using this clean and new theme in my own
work.
This colour scheme is called Modern and Minimalist and I think that this would really
work for my theme of magazine as it feels fresh and new but still draws peoples
attention without feeling crowded with colours as the pops of colour are very muted
and not too bright.
6. Outfits for photos
Front cover.
For this outfit I want the
front cover to be focused
on the shoes and socks as
I plan to change the
colour while putting
everything else in black
and white. I think shorts
will work well a
s the shoes are really
chunky therefore with the
thin leg I think that it will
work better especially
when it comes to the
editing as well as then I
don’t have to separate
the shoe and the leg. I
think that this outfit will
work well as when I make
it black and white it will
work better because the
clothes are already dark
and therefore easier to
make darker, I also plan
on having a white
background therefore the
dark hoodie and shorts
will bounce of the
background.
Double page spread.
For the double page
spread I plan on editing
this image quiet heavily
therefore I didn’t want
to have an outfit that
was too bright and in
your face however I still
wanted the contrast of
the black and white
tops so that when I do
edit them there is a
nice contrast with the
actual boy himself as
well, saying this I don’t
plan on having the
bottom half of him for
now in the double page
spread but if I do it will
most likely be just black
trousers to keep to dark
monochromatic theme.
The outfits I am using
are very basic and this
works well as I do plan
on heavily editing the
double page spread
therefore I want that to
be the main focus.
7. Locations for shoots
Scarborough
Scarborough is a town on the north
sea coast of North Yorkshire,
England, I have decided to go to
this location first as I want to try
get some water/beach shoots
however there is a lot that I need
to consider. For example the times
of day that I plan to go really
matter as the tide comes in and
you cant go onto the beach at
certain times of the day. I used the
tide predictions app to help me
with what time I can and cant go
on the beach. However I am going
to plan other locations as on the
day I plan to go it is suppose to be
foggy and rainy which could affect
the outcome of the pictures.
The second back up
location is going to be
Dalby Forest as it is not
too far away from
Scarborough however I
think if it is raining and
foggy it wont really
matter as we are in a
forest and I think that
it is a completely
different setting and
therefore I will get a
different style of
photos. I did some
research all about
Dalby forest and there
are not really any rules
about times or
anything however I
would want to go
when its less busy to
get the best shots as
possible.
8. Location Recces
Prior to the photography shoot I decided to go to Dalby
forest to look at potential spots and really see if it would
be a good place for me and the best parts of it. I think
initially at the front of Dalby forest walking in from the
car park there were a lot of things that I could
potentially use in the children's play park as I think using
the swings and playground I could get some good shots,
through the forest near the rope swings there is a little
river which islands in the middle that you can get to
quite easily therefore I think this would be a great
location for the photography shoot.
9. Image Styles
These are the types of images that I will be using throughout my magazine
as I think that they are very typical and usual to be used in a magazine as
its just one model in each of the pictures that stands out the most and
from these pictures that I took prior to this I think that each of these
images could be used for the type of magazine that I am wanting to
create. I like the editing styles in these photos as I think here you can
definitely tell that it has been edited however I think that they are easy on
the eye and not too much where the viewer may feel overwhelmed. For
my actual images I do plan on editing them quite a bit however I still feel
like I don’t want to overdo it but I do want to my the reader really look at
the picture. I think looking at some of these previous edits I have made is
helpful as it gives me ideas about things I have already done and all the
different styles that you can do from just one picture. For my magazine I
am going to be doing a monochromatic black and white with a pop of
colour as I feel that this will suit my audience more however I have never
really made an edit with black and white before therefore I haven't got a
lot of experience as in these edits I have used very warm subtle colours.
All these pictures were taken in the same places on the same day however
they are all different and I think this is because of the different styles of
editing and the way I have presented it as a image and I really enjoy this
aspect and I plan to use this in my FMP magazine.
10. Layout plan 1 For this first layout plan I think that I kept the
normal magazine layout that a lot of popular
magazine companies use and I think that they
use this simple layout as it is very strong the
way that there is room for full image and the
masthead with some sub headers and
information on the left side, I think that it
works well as it makes the overall look not
look too crowded and over the top as there is
a good clear space for everything and nothing
is really squeezed on as I have placed to have
there each place. I think using the rule of 3
works well with the image of the magazine as
it means that you will either center the image
so that the model is the main focus as the
audience first look at it, or using the image of
the model to either the left or right side
making there more room for information
down the side. In my opinion I think that using
the image on the side works well as it is still
the main focus as it’s the only image on there
but it overall makes the magazine look more
professional and like there has been more
thought put into the layout. In my magazine I
will be putting the masthead behind the model
to make it look like the masthead is part of the
image and overall look, I also think that this
looks more technical rather than just having a
separate masthead and separate image.
Overall I think that I will use this layout as it is
the most common but for good reason as it is
almost iconic and I think it gives a mature
theme while still being fun and interesting.
11. Layout plan 2
For my layout plan 2 I decided to use some of
the magazine covers from my research to find
another popular magazine layout where the
image isn't really the main focus as the
masthead goes down the side of the page
drawing more attention towards it. In my
opinion I don’t think I would use this kind of
layout as I think that it isn't very easy to work
out what the magazine is advertising as well
as making the overall page look very crowded
and overwhelming, I also think that having the
photo at the bottom of the page makes the
page look very cramped and small whereas if I
placed the photo at the top it would elongate
the page making it look longer with more
information. I also think that having
subheadings at the top confuses the audience
as it makes it look like there will be lots of
different information and this might confuse
the reader on which part of information is the
most important . Overall I don’t see myself
using this type of layout plan as I think that it
just isn't really the style and approach that I
am going for because I think it gives of a very
messy and childish vibe whereas I want my
magazine to look clean and well thought out
but sophisticated at the same time, although I
do think that this layout is interesting I still
think that the generic one will work well for
my audience and my magazine in general.
12. Magazine text
Front cover
Double page spread
Double page spread
On the front cover I will include many different subheadings along with small parts of information that will draw the audience in to read the rest
of the magazine. Some of the sub headers that I will use, How Ansel Adams became the greatest Photographer of all time.
In the first double page spread I will be conducting the interview with a photographer, I think that this will work well as in the front cover I
will advertise this and then people are more likely to read it as well as it will get people more interested to read the rest of the magazine. The
interview will consist of the photographer talking about how he got into photography and tips and advice.
The interview- Hi my name is Oliver Jones and I am a free lance photographer, growing up in Yorkshire there was never a lot to do however my
mother enjoyed taking lots of photographs of family and once I started using her camera I found a great interest in it. I continued to do photography
at university in London and though it had been a dream of mine it was very different from where I grew up and I felt out of place after dropping out
after my first year I decided to go back to Yorkshire and just start working for people which included, weddings , birthdays , promotion events
however I did not enjoy this but I think that this is a critical part of being a photographer as this is how I started to get my name around and make it to
where I am today. My biggest inspiration was definitely my mother as if it wasn’t for her who known’s what I would be doing.
The next double page spread will consist of different camera tips along side some ‘well known’ images that can be talked about by the
photographers, I will be writing this in a non formal way with the camera tips all around some of the images as I think that this really makes it
more suited towards my audience instead of specifically for photographers. I will link the writing in to each of the photos here
14. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
camera could run out of battery make sure everything is well organised and
charged up well as well as taking spare batteries
to ensure that you could never run into this
problem
Photoshop could crash and delete work make sure to consistently keep saving as well
as making backups to ensure that you don’t
loose all your work
SD card could corrupt make sure to save your work to lots of different
places and sending it back to yourself e.g. email
computer could over heat make sure that you take regularly to ensure
computer doesn’t over work
studio lights could fall over make sure that everyone is organised and there
is no chance that things could get knocked over
you could loose your memory pen with all your
work on
make sure that you have multiple copies and
backups just in case.
15. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
computer over heating could cause a fire make sure to take regular breaks so the risk is
lower
could drop some equipment on someone
causing an injury
make sure that you wear all safety straps to
ensure nothing could fall
studio lights could over heat and cause a fire make sure you take regular breaks so that they
don’t overheat and cause someone an injury
you could develop hand strain from typing too
much
taking regular breaks will help to control hand
strain
back pain could occur from sitting down too
much while editing
make sure breaks and standing up to decrease
chance of developing back pain
you could develop eye strain make sure you take breaks so that your eyes
don’t get tired.
16. Production Schedule
