Artifact 1 This was posted in the room. I thought it was a great addition to the class.  Mrs. Perez drew the students attention to it when they were working on parts of speech and vocabulary lessons.
Artifact 2 This is a test that was given while I was in the class.   It is pulled from Core Curriculum.

Artifact 3 This was an example of a lesson on making inferences. Mrs. Perez would bring up examples in both Spanish and English.

Lesson Plan I thought this was a great idea the daily lesson plan is posted on the front board. They also have it in their daily planners.  The students are aware of the standards that are being worked on every week.
On the other side of the room there is Homework Listing for the week. It list English, Math and Spanish homework for each day.  They all tie to the theme of the week.  This also goes in their planners that goes home to their parents.
Mrs. Perez interacting with her students during a Spanish lesson.  She walks the room at all times and sits with students and assist.  If they need further instructions she provides them in either English or Spanish depending which is the students native language.
I was very impressed with all the great bulletin boards and supplies in Mrs. Perez classroom.   Mrs. Perez class taught both English and Spanish the in classroom library was filled with both languages.  They had English and Spanish  dictionaries as well as Spanish chapter books. Very impressed by the variety.
This was a interesting board. It showcased how the students did on the previous weeks mini benchmark test in both  Reading and Math.  The frogs have each students “secret” name.  This is a name only they and Mrs. Perez knows.  This helps eliminate peer pressure the students are only competing with themselves.
Teacher Interview What teaching strategies do you use to accommodate non-native English speakers in your classroom? I provide extra time for them to read through and comprehend the assignment.  If there first language is Spanish I will tell them the directions first in English and then explain further in Spanish.  Seeing this class also teaches Spanish to non Spanish students I use the students a lot to assist.  The English speaking students buddy with the Spanish speaking. They assist each other when they need help in the languages.  What form of program is used? (bilingual, transitional, submersion, etc.) How did it help the ESL student. Hillcrest Elementary is an amazing school because it is a foreign language academy. Every student is a langue learner.  I think this helps my ESL students feel comfortable in a new surrounding.  What kind of assistive technology or other educational resources are used for this particular group of students? We are fortunate to have 5 computers for the students to use. I have programs that teaches in both English and Spanish.  The students can take assessments, play language games and do research about current class themes. We also have a large library within our classroom filled with both English and Spanish reference materials and chapter books.
Teacher Interview What is your greatest challenge when teaching ESL students? Making them feel confident in themselves that they can learn a new language and hold on to the heritage they came from.  It can be very stressful to a child to learn something new.  That is the great thing about Hillcrest every student studies in two languages usually their native language and an additional language.   What forms of assessment would be best for non-native English speakers I try to use the same assessments for all students. But, I keep in mind any learning disabilities, language delays, etc. into consideration.  I also look at the daily work they do and how they have improved social as well.  I feel all aspects of the school day academically and socially should be taking into account when accessing any students growth.  That is one reason why we do the mini benchmarks test every week. This allows the students not to feel as much as pressure in regards to big test.  They learn how to improve their skills as they go.

  • 2. Artifact 1 This was posted in the room. I thought it was a great addition to the class. Mrs. Perez drew the students attention to it when they were working on parts of speech and vocabulary lessons.
  • 3. Artifact 2 This is a test that was given while I was in the class. It is pulled from Core Curriculum.
  • 5. Artifact 3 This was an example of a lesson on making inferences. Mrs. Perez would bring up examples in both Spanish and English.
  • 7. Lesson Plan I thought this was a great idea the daily lesson plan is posted on the front board. They also have it in their daily planners. The students are aware of the standards that are being worked on every week.
  • 8. On the other side of the room there is Homework Listing for the week. It list English, Math and Spanish homework for each day. They all tie to the theme of the week. This also goes in their planners that goes home to their parents.
  • 9. Mrs. Perez interacting with her students during a Spanish lesson. She walks the room at all times and sits with students and assist. If they need further instructions she provides them in either English or Spanish depending which is the students native language.
  • 10. I was very impressed with all the great bulletin boards and supplies in Mrs. Perez classroom. Mrs. Perez class taught both English and Spanish the in classroom library was filled with both languages. They had English and Spanish dictionaries as well as Spanish chapter books. Very impressed by the variety.
  • 11. This was a interesting board. It showcased how the students did on the previous weeks mini benchmark test in both Reading and Math. The frogs have each students “secret” name. This is a name only they and Mrs. Perez knows. This helps eliminate peer pressure the students are only competing with themselves.
  • 12. Teacher Interview What teaching strategies do you use to accommodate non-native English speakers in your classroom? I provide extra time for them to read through and comprehend the assignment. If there first language is Spanish I will tell them the directions first in English and then explain further in Spanish. Seeing this class also teaches Spanish to non Spanish students I use the students a lot to assist. The English speaking students buddy with the Spanish speaking. They assist each other when they need help in the languages. What form of program is used? (bilingual, transitional, submersion, etc.) How did it help the ESL student. Hillcrest Elementary is an amazing school because it is a foreign language academy. Every student is a langue learner. I think this helps my ESL students feel comfortable in a new surrounding. What kind of assistive technology or other educational resources are used for this particular group of students? We are fortunate to have 5 computers for the students to use. I have programs that teaches in both English and Spanish. The students can take assessments, play language games and do research about current class themes. We also have a large library within our classroom filled with both English and Spanish reference materials and chapter books.
  • 13. Teacher Interview What is your greatest challenge when teaching ESL students? Making them feel confident in themselves that they can learn a new language and hold on to the heritage they came from. It can be very stressful to a child to learn something new. That is the great thing about Hillcrest every student studies in two languages usually their native language and an additional language. What forms of assessment would be best for non-native English speakers I try to use the same assessments for all students. But, I keep in mind any learning disabilities, language delays, etc. into consideration. I also look at the daily work they do and how they have improved social as well. I feel all aspects of the school day academically and socially should be taking into account when accessing any students growth. That is one reason why we do the mini benchmarks test every week. This allows the students not to feel as much as pressure in regards to big test. They learn how to improve their skills as they go.
