1. Theme: Environment âLinear text
Linear text 1
A very good morning to the headmistress, teachers and fellow students. Cleaning up the
environment may seem like too big a problem, but we can all do our part in making the world a
cleaner place.
You could start by recycling. If we did not recycle, there would be so much rubbish on the
ground that we could not even see our own feet! When you recycle paper, it improves our
oxygen level. For example, when we recycle plastic, new things can be made from it, such as
bottles or carpets.
We should also conserve energy. Try using less water and energy The less resources we need to
take from nature, the less energy we need to produce. Therefore, do not take long showers and
turn off the lights when you leave the room. This will help save the environment and also save
your money. Apart from that, do not use the air-conditioner all the time. Try using it only when
the weather is very warm.
You should also use products that do not harm the environment. To help keep the water clean, do
not buy products that have the words 'Toxic', 'Danger' or 'Warning' on their labels. If they do,
these products are probably harmful to you and the environment.
Another way to help the environment is by having a neighbourhood gotong royong. Also, do not
throw away the toys, books or CDs that you do not want anymore. If they are still in good
condition, you could donate them to a charity. You should take your bike instead of getting a ride
from your parents if you can. This will help to reduce pollution and at the same time it is also
good for your health.

6. Read the passage below about gorillas.
The gorilla is the largest of the living primates and the last member of the ape family
known to science.
By nature, the gorilla is shy and retiring rather than ferocious. It usually seeks no trouble
unless harassed and will valiantly defend its family group if threatened. Family groups are close-
knit and may have up to 30 members. The group usually consists of at least one older male, one
or more females and a few juveniles. Gorillas have strong attachments to members of their own
group. An adult male normally leads each group, serving as its chief protector and defender.
Gorillas are nomadic - they build new nests each day at dusk, constructing them of bent branches
in a tree or of grasses on the ground.
Gorillas have a particular behaviour when they face threats. They scream, grab foliage
and stuff it in their mouths, stand erect on their hind legs, tear up and throw plants, drum on the
chest with hands or fists, stamp their feet, strike the ground with the palms of their hands and
gallop in a mock attack on all fours.
Mountain gorillas have a slow rate of reproduction. Females give birth for the first time
at about age 10 and will have offspring every three or four years and produces a single young.
Newborn gorillas are weak and tiny, weighing in at about 4 pounds.
The most serious threat to gorillas is habitat loss to agriculture. The gorilla's only known
enemies are leopards and humans. Crocodiles are potentially dangerous to lowland gorillas.

8. Read the passage on recycling
Recycling is the process of collecting materials that are often considered trash and
remanufacturing them into new products that can be resold and used again. It is made possible by
people who separate the recyclable products from their trash and send the items to a recycling
centre where the products are reprocessed into new items.
Did you know that recycling done on an everyday basis could actually help our planet Earth
on a large extent? This can begin even at home. The benefits of recycling are many, from
reducing thÂŁ effects of industrial production to saving energy.
Everybody is used to receiving junk mail via snail mail. Imagine, most of these documents
are completely worthless and discouraging the usage of this would save at least 150,000 trees
annually as these would not be cut down for the requirement of paper. We all know the
importance of trees in the ecological cycle. Most companies therefore resort to recycled paper or
the use of Internet to propagate their message. Did you know that every ton of paper saves at
least 17 trees? So avoid the unnecessary use of paper and if needed, stick to recycled paper.
Using the concept of recycling can also help to reduce the greenhouse effect. Gas emissions
occur due to the manufacturing, use and also the disposal of products that are not biodegradable.
If the greenhouse gas emissions reach dangerous concentration levels, it leads to changes in the
temperature globally, changes in the levels of the sea and other bizarre climatic conditions.
Therefore, recycling can help reduce the need to manufacture paper, plastics, metals and glass.
This would save energy needed to manufacture new products.
Using recycled products would also reduce the amount of materials (which are not
biodegradable) that end up in the landfills. Materials that end up in landfills tend to decompose
and cause the release of methane gas. This is very harmful for the environment; therefore such
landfills are the main cause of the emission of methane gas into the atmosphere.
Recycling benefits everyone and everything.
