2. Advertising
Advertising is a way of
communicating using marketing
skills. The affect this has on the
audience is that it encourages,
persuades and sometimes
manipulates them to take action
and purchase the item being sold
or event being held. Another
purpose of advertising is to
reassure the audience/viewer that
their company is very successful
this will affectively make the
audience trust the company more
and feel positive enough that the
condition of the item is very high
standard or event.
3. Types of advertisers.
Commercial advertisers- They focus more on the
consumption/service through branding. This includes
putting a products name or image with certain qualities to
attract consumers.
Non-commercial advertisers- They spend their money on
advertising their products to include political parties,
interest groups and religious organizations.
Non profit organizations- They rely on free mode
persuasion an example of this is public service
announcements.
4. History of advertising
In the seventeenth centaury the first
advertisement that fit the whole definition of
advertisement in the media were in newspapers.
These were very simple with no illustrations of
typefaces and were normally hard to identify
from the news stories.
In the eighteenth centaury advertisers began
to understand that they needed to create a
meaning for their product. Therefore this lead to
more sophisticated products and gathered pace.
Josiah Wedgewood who manufactured pottery
was one of the first to be good at advertising his
products and aiming his products at a target
audience which was middle class families.
5. Continuing history of advertisement
The nineteenth century was when advertisement
became a little more complex as the marketing began to
mix images and words and adopt the layout that is used
today. In this time advertising was recognized to be very
important to business.
During the Twentieth century governments began to
realize how powerful advertisement was and especially in
the first world war as advertisement was used to enlist
soldiers and enforce government polices. Also
propaganda was used in this time to manipulate an
audience which is now seen to be very unfair.
6. History of advertisement
In 1914 the advertisement industry was fully established
and was continuing to expand after the first world war.
Also new ways to attract a mass audience was becoming
possible for example cinema, radio. Advertisers were
quick to use broadcasters to help fund and advertise their
companies.
In the 1920’s radio broadcasting was very popular and
successful at grabbing audiences attention. Between
1923- 1960 60% of American owned a radio set.
7. History of advertisement
After the second world war had finished the new medium
of television had been invented. So much money was
spent to advertising agencies who advertised for example
washing machines and vacuum cleaners. These were all
new and exciting products that they never knew would be
so essential in there life's. With the combination of sound
and image made the medium of television much more
successful at advertising than the radio. Immediately the
air waves were full of television adverts.
8. History of advertisement
The 1950’s was when the advertisement industry went
crazy and was also the time when men became stars of
the media.
As the 1960’s began TV advertisement became
sophisticated and the production cost rose. Single
sponsors began to struggle and which is why commercial
breaks came into the industry.
9. First TV advert
The first television advert was in 1941 and it was
advertising Bulova watches. The advert cost $9 just 4
more dollars than the reconstruction cost
