15. • P&G wanted to create a perfect chip to address consumer
complaints about broken, greasy, and stale chips, as well as
air in the bags.The task was assigned to chemist Fredric
Baur, who, from 1956 to 1958, created chip’s saddle shape
from fried dough, and the can to go with it. Baur could not
figure out how to make the chips taste good and he
eventually was pulled off the job to work on another brand.
• In the mid-1960s, another P&G researcher, Alexander
Liepa restarted Baur’s work, and set out to improve on the
taste, which he succeeded in doing.While Baur was the
true inventor of the Pringles chip, Liepa's name is on the
patent. Gene Wolfe, a mechanical engineer-author known
for science fiction and fantasy novels, developed the
machine that cooks them. Their consistent saddle shape is
mathematically known as a hyperbolic paraboloid.Their
design is reportedly aided by supercomputers to ensure
safe aerodynamics while packaging.
18. • When the DuPont chemist ROY PLUNKET combined a specific
gas with hydrochloric acid. He gathered the desired gas
(tetrafluoroethylene) but wasn't quite ready to start
experimenting. So he cooled and pressurized the gas in
canisters overnight. But when he returned the next day, the
gas was gone. The canisters weighed the same amount as
when they were full, but nothing came out. Confused,
Plunkett cut the canisters in half. The gas had solidified on the
sides, creating a slick surface. “Rather than discard the
apparent mistake, Plunkett and his assistant tested the new
polymer and found that it had some very unusual properties:
it was extremely slippery as well as inert to virtually all
chemicals, including highly corrosive acids,“ writes DuPont in
its corporate history. "The product, trademarked in 1945, was
first used by the military in artillery shell fuses and in the
production of nuclear material for the Manhattan Project
21. • The State Mutual Life Assurance Company of
Worcester Massachusetts had purchased Guarantee
Mutual Company of Ohio. The merger resulted in low
employee morale. In an attempt to solve this, Harvey
Ball was employed in 1963 as a freelance artist, to
come up with an image to increase morale. What he
created was a X face ,which was created in less than 10
minutes. The simplicity of the image brought smiles to
the faces of the executives, who paid him $45 for his
creation.
