In the story "The lady with a Dog" there are only two main characters in the whole story who play
the roles of protagonist characters. The first protagonist character is Dmitri Gurov; although the
story highlight in smaller extent the role of Anna, we get that the majority of the story is from
Gurov's perspective. At the start of the story we see Gorov parting ways with his love Anna
(Chekhov 23). The story later follows a clear perspective on his character, but not that of Anna.

meaningfully about the personal secrecies of his life, specifically Anna. This intolerable sensation
sends him to "S–," to find her. Only when Gurov is standing outside Anna's house does he actually

begins to reflect upon the two lives he is living, one that is full of the truths and another that is full

The scene looks completely ordinary, yet there are traces of positive emotions in the descriptions of
the water and the moonlight. This particular moment is seemingly not that significant, however,

that this woman is like no other woman he had affairs with. In other words, foreshadowing the deep
connection between the two. Gurov himself realises this very later, after these particular moments

inferior race" and then later in the story says this only to save face while drinking with friends, but

stories have the theme of fate in them, and the characters use fate as a reason for their affairs. In
Chekhov's story Anna says, "'It's a good thing I am leaving,' she said to Gurov. 'It's the hand of
Fate'" (218 Chekhov). Anna and Dmitri use fate as an excuse for their affair. They claim it is fate
that brought them together and now it is fate that will draw them apart. Then later on, the two
believe, "...it seemed to them that Fate itself had meant them for one another..." (224 Chekhov).
Both Anna and Dmitri believe fate is the cause of their relationship. The two believe they are forced
to be apart because of their arranged marriages, but fate has brought them back together. Dmitri and

Analysis Of ' The Lady With The Dog '
The term epiphany is pretty common in literary terms, and most often means a moment of
realization or self discovery. In a story, it's when a character discovers an awareness or knowledge
that really changes their views on life. They start to "see a new light" as some would say. In the
story of "The Lady with the Dog," there are four parts, and each of the four parts of the story
involves an epiphany of some sort, one way or another. Part I is really the start of it all, where we
discover Dmitri Gurav's honest opinion of women, and it is not a good one. He thinks all women
are pretty dumb, and even cheats on his own wife all the time. He talks about her in a degrading
way often. "She read a great deal, used phonetic spelling, called him husband, not Dmitri, but
Dimitri, and he secretly considered her unintelligent, narrow, inelegant, was afraid of her, and did
not like to be home" (Chekhov 291)
He even refers to women in general as "The Lower Race." He was a full fledged misogynist and
sexist, who like to play woman as a game. After meeting Anna Sergeyeyna, his opinion started to
change just a little bit. After their first couple of meetings, Gurav had his first epiphany. He realized
that Anna was different. She was actually intelligent, and she wasn't as easy and naГЇve as all of the
other girls that he had achieved as conquests. He had actually met a woman that he could stand to
be around for a while, which would cause him to have to think about his moral views of life

When reading fiction stories, we often wonder who is telling the story. Author's write fiction stories
using different styles of narration. This gives readers different perspectives of stories, causing them
to analyze from a specific perspective. Depending on the style of narration, readers may either feel
connected or disconnected from the narrator. Third–person narration is a style of narration that
separates the readers from the narrator because it presents thoughts and feelings of other characters.
Fiction stories often leave a reader with the question, "Who exactly is the narrator?" In third–person
narration, readers gain insight on other characters, but not the person who is telling the story. Telling
a story through third–person hides the identity of the narrator. As a non–character, a narrator's role is
limited to providing information of other characters. For instance, in the story "The Lady with the
Dog," by Anton Chekhov, the focal characters are Dmitri Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna. Neither
Dmitri nor Anna are the characters telling the story. In the beginning of the story, the narrator begins

For example, "The Cask of Amontillado," by Edgar Allan Poe, is told using first–person. In the
introduction of the story, the narrator asserts, "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I
best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge." (115; par. 1) At the start, readers
feel connected towards the narrator because the narrator is a character in the story. This allows
readers to analyze the story through a focal character's perspective, gaining insight to the thoughts
and feelings of that character, unlike in third–person narration, the reader constantly has to analyze

The Lady With The Dog Analysis
Today in many places around the world women and men work in similar jobs, and perform
similar task. The treatment toward women has improved greatly, as compared with many early
civilizations where women were considered to be at a lower level than men, they had to stay in
the home and did not have as many opportunities as the women of today do. The way in which
women were treated was due to beliefs, tradition, and how people viewed women. In "The Lady
with the Dog," by Anton Chekhov the audience is presented with a character who thinks of women
at a lower level and considers himself better and greater. The reader can see this by the way in
which the character Gurov refers to his wife, the way in which he refers to women, and by the
attitude which he takes with Anna.
By the way in which Gurov refers to his wife the audience can see that he considers himself greater
and better. At the beginning of the story he mentions "secretly considering his wife shallow,
narrow–minded, and dowdy, and mentions that he disliked being at home"(Chekhov, 1899, p.
1569). He thinks that his wife does not like to and is not willing to listen to others views, and
thinks that his wife does not have style. He thinks this secretly and never mentions it to her which
shows that he doesn't consider her important enough for him to share his opinions with her. He
mentions that he does not like to be at home because of how tired he is of his wife, and therefore
avoids being home as long as possible. This
