THE GAY MARRIAGE DEBATE CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL ISSUES GROUP 2: BETHANY
DOGAN; JONATHAN FERRY; SUSAN FITTS; CLARA GIRALDO MOUNT WASHINGTON
COLLEGE Abstract Same–sex relationships date back to Greek and Roman times. They have
existed in society for hundreds of years. It was during a culture shift during the Christian revolution
that society began to condemn the practice. Our current society is realizing same–sex relationships
do exist and have done so regardless of law allowing them to outwardly celebrate their unions. Gay
couples have remained secluded in society and covered their living arrangements under feeble
explanations and lies. Hiding true feelings and living a lie is destructive to a person's well–being
and happiness. Recently the United States took steps to legalize and recognize unions of all types
whether they are of opposite–sex or same–sex. Our country stands for equality and freedom so this
is only right that our country take this step along with many others around the globe. History of
Gay Marriage Today's modern debate over gay marriage has been played by politicians over the
past few decades to win and keep the majority vote. The general public is led to believe that this
issue has come to light because of modernization and changing beliefs and loosening morals when
the fact is homosexuality and gay unions can be traced back to the times of ancient Egypt.

Gay Marriage Policy Case Summary
The policy case that I reviewed is the Gay marriage showdowns: Will voters bar marriage for
same–sex couples? By Kenneth Jost. For many years, there's been debate whether or not homosexual
individuals deserve any rights. People tend use the separation church and state as agreement against
gay marriage. "Church and state were distinct in that the Federal Government could not elevate one
denomination over others. Nor could government and its flawed inhabitants usurp divine authority
by harnessing politics to the church. Faith is no civil contract, but a personal matter not to be
profaned by politics (Flax, 2011). Churches feels that the US government have no right rendered
politics to churches, but there's injustice and inequality within Churches, it than becomes a public
problem which can lead to government intervention. Social equity was critical value in this case
study because no one, not a Church cannot tell no one who he/she can marry as it is discrimination
if people do not have the free will to marry someone of the same sex. California became the second

Is Marriage only for men and women? This became a big debate about traditional marriage and its
norm in society. Should homosexual get the same benfitis as heterosexual? Will homosexual affect
the stability of a family? There's no clear answer. Supporters for the gay marriage argued their 14th
amendment rights was violated, "no state "shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the
privileges or immunities of the citizens of the United States... [or] deprive any person of life, liberty,
or property without due process of law, [or] deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal
protection of the laws (www.law.cornell.edu)." Marriage is fundamental to society, no matter if the
individual is a homosexual or heterosexual. Individuals should be treated

Gay Marriage Controversy
Gay marriage has been a recent controversy for many reasons. Many people (religious conservatives)
believe that same–sex marriage is immoral, sinful, and threatens the traditional structure of a family.
But gay and lesbian supporters feel marriage is a right that everyone should have, backed by the Due
Process and Equal Protection of the Fourteenth Amendment. It has been proven that the outlook on
gay marriage has changed drastically based simply on the fact that younger people had supported it
and it just took time to gain enough approval from enough of the country to legalize it. Since most
of 18–29 year–olds of 2006 supported same–sex marriage, "two–thirds of Americans think that

During the Clinton presidency, gays and lebians were harassed with many of them being in the
military. The people protecting our very own country were put on witch hunts during the "Don't
Ask, Don't Tell" policy. While gay and lesbian individuals were being harassed in the military, a
good number of couples were victims of hate crimes. Who is to protect those who dedicate their
lives to protect our country? Murders based on one's sexual orientation is a form of severe
discrimination. It was counted that in "the United States, out of the almost 6,000 hate crimes
committed in 2013, 20 percent (approximately 1,200) were based on victims' sexual orientation,
according to the FBI" (1000s who died in anti–gay, anti–trans attacks (updates). (2016, June 12)).

Argumentative Essay on Gay Marriage Marriage is the ceremonial binding of two people, male and
female, into one couple. Historically, marriage has been the institution when a man and a woman
join together with the promise of love, devotion, to always stay together, to be there for each other,
to take care of one another and to start a family together. Biblically, marriage has been all the aspects

Gay Marriage Equality
Of the many societal customs engrained in humanity, marriage may be one of the most prevalent.
For most of history, man and woman have displayed their capacity for affection through this
formality; and, for most of history, marriage has been limited to only man and woman. Like
marriage, however, homosexuality too has existed for thousands of years. One could even argue that
it is simply a part of human nature. Nonetheless, those who identify as anything but heterosexual
have been persecuted for hundreds of years. In the United States of America, gay marriage has been
legal since 2015 –– and although legal, the opposition persists to this day through politicians and
religious groups. For example, while the Constitution of the United States...show more content...
Much of the argument lies in the Holy Bible, which is a book written nearly 3500 years ago.
While the book does state that man shall not lay with man, it also provides the reader with a
plethora of other suggestions. It even discusses the logistics of buying and selling slaves. With that
in mind, a large portion of the Bible cannot be taken literally, but instead read for the overall
message of the book –– which undoubtedly revolves more so around the themes love and
acceptance, rather than discrimination on a basis of sexual identity. This is a concept humanity
has failed to grasp for thousands of years, and thus the fight against gay rights continues to this
day. When arguing for the sake of equality, however, one must raise the question: if Jesus Christ
were alive today, what would he say about gay marriage? Would he use words like "faggot," or
"dike,"? Or would he walk with them, as he did with the outcasts and lepers of his time? Religious
scholars have yet to debate questions such as these, and for good reason. Jesus was more concerned
with love than discrimination; to deny that would raise questions of literacy and comprehension. To
examine love as a concept, however, is a crucial step in understanding marriage

Gay marriage is an up and rising controversial issue, until seven years ago it wasn't common to

my attention because several of my family members including the newest member my older sister,
are now considered a part of the homosexual community, and it seems as time goes on this population
continues to grow. For the past thousand years, marriage has been recognized as the social union
between man and woman. Same–sex marriage is the legal union between two people of the same
gender. Throughout history, same sex unions have taken place around the world, but laws
recognizing such marriages did not start occurring until more modern times. In most cultures across
the world, homosexuality was viewed as wrong, and marriages between same–sex couples were
forbidden. The issue of gay marriage has been a raging battle since the late twentieth century. The
individual States are left to determine the laws that govern this situation today. Gays and other
liberals feel that they have a right to join together in harmony, while the conservative groups in the
United States fight this situation persistently. Gay marriage can be a touchy subject for some and
the way people were brought up could ultimately affect their views and opinions. With an increased

Gay Marriage
There seem to be Specific time in history where certain issues define the culture tension in a society.
They become representative of large worldview and clearly emphasize the battle between divergent
moral and spiritual perspectives. Homosexual marriage in the United States is one of these issues.
In the past five years, there have been various threats and debates about the possibility of legalizing
homosexual union. The issue took centre stage in February largely. The U.S Senate quashes a
proposed constitutional amendment to ban gays from marrying. President Bush and other same–sex
marriage opponents say they will try again. Most of Americans are against same–sex marriage

Third, gay marriage is against "Religious Speech". Some religious leaders think it could become
more difficult legally to lecture against homosexuality if the nation were to support same sex
marriage as a fundamental right. The argument has spread, reaching Christian television shows and
church pulpits. Major religious organizations have issued warnings, including concerned women for

Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized? Essay
Introduction What does it mean to be gay and why does society discriminate against those who
are deemed to be gay? This paper establishes that being gay is primarily based on the supposition
that one is either homosexual, transgender, lesbian, or bisexual. It also establishes that one of the
primary reasons why gays are discriminated against within the society is religion; that some of the
views held by different religious conclaves substantiate gay rejection by the society. On a more
personal rather than institutional level, this paper also reveals that the culture of gay is also largely
rebuked based on individual philosophies and moral standings which is precisely the min reason as
to why hate crimes against gays have in the past found a substantive projection. In the American
socio–cultural fabric, the emergence of gays has generated a continuous debate about gay marriage;
essentially whether it should be legalized or not. The debate has pitted religion verses gay rights
activists who base their arguments on the equal rights protection clause of the Fourteenth
Amendment of the US Constitution. In conclusion, this paper will elaborate on some of the some
of the states that have inherently legalized gay marriage, the projection of the issue five years from
today, and how society can assist in making the world a better place for gays.

Critical Review – Gay Marriage "Unnatural" Sheldon L, 1996, Gay Marriage "Unnatural", USA
Today, USA. Homosexual marriage is one of the old but controversial issues around the world.
Compared to the past, it seems to become a more open debate among people. At the same time,
people seem to be more swayable than before, but towards the gay marriage, different voices have
still been hovering in the air. Gay people and their supporters have been striving for their rights to
get married legally, while others who against gay marriage have never stopped deterring it. Strongly
against gay marriage is the central theme of Louis P. Sheldon's article Gay Marriage "Unnatural".
According to the author's views, gay marriage is 'unnatural', and...show more content...
The numbers he presented seem attractive and persuasive, but it is worth noting that no source has
been provided for them, so readers do not know how trustworthy they are. In my view, it would be
more convincing for example to try referencing the data in his claims like the quoted above as well
as the gay people's average income is twice higher than that of non–gay people in America, and his
figures will not be questioned. The author of this article can therefore be criticised here for a lack
of citation of sources to back up his views. Another questionable aspect of this article is its hidden
premises. Although the author does not openly state that the marriage should be generational,
otherwise they should get divorce, this could be understood from the authors's statement that gay
marriage is "not generational". While marriage is not only about generating offspring but also
means love. It is an insulting claim for the couples who in love but unfortunately could not have
children might because fertility problems, health issues, over age, their chosen life style of Dink

marriage? I do not think so. In my view, whether to have kids or not in couples' marriage lives, it is
a matter that couples, including gay couples need to consider and judge not by other irrelevant
people, and it should not be an excuse to despoil

The Debate On Gay Marriage
I.Introduction to Moral Dispute: Gay Marriage Contemporary moral disputes are constantly
ongoing around the world and in the United States. For hundreds of years marriage has been
defined as the legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman as partners in a
relationship. Up until relatively recently the debate on gay marriage has not been a popular topic.
Gay marriage has been illegal in the US and most countries around the world up until the early
2000s.[1] The debate on gay marriage has grown with more and more people publicly speaking and
giving their opinions on it, especially in the Unites States.
II.Opposing Views Gay marriage has been largely opposed in the US for years now for several
different reasons that mostly...show more content...
[3] The strong support of this argument by religious figures, such as the Pope, makes this a strong
argument for the opposing side. However, in more recent years Pope Francis has made a slightly less
opposing statement, when he said "Who am I to judge a gay person?" [4] Showing how times have
certainly changed in regards to view on homosexual people. American historian Harry Jaffa agreed
with this idea that being gay is not natural, he then argues that if people think that this is natural than
many other 'bad' things are also natural. Jaffa believes, "if sodomy is not unnatural, nothing is
unnatural. And if nothing is unnatural, then nothing – including slavery and genocide – is unjust".
[5]Jaffa argues that homosexuality is not natural because the only natural reason for relationships,
according to the bible, is to have children. So, these arguments that homosexuality is unnatural and
deviant (once again based off of the bible and religion) couple with the argument that the purpose
for marriage, as defined by religion and the bible, is to reproduce, and since two men or two women
cannot reproduce they should not be able to wed. An obvious continuation to this argument is the
idea that by legalizing gay marriage it is giving the approval of homosexual

Homosexuality has been a sensitive topic and risen a lot of controversial opinions when some states
approved same–sex marriage laws. Although same–sex marriage is against the traditional family
structure previously established, many people think it has to be dealing with a more equal and
integrating focus. Therefore, they think they should be accepted into society and treated with the
same opportunities and rights. As a human, the individual seeks mostly the same goal, to build a
family. And this goal is set regardless of gender, age, beliefs background and other factors. Since
some states have qualified homosexual people to be merited with the same benefits as others;
therefore, gay, and lesbian people look forward to having kids after they marry. Leading to the
outburst of debating whether same–sex parents are able to raise a good family. A person who is in
the LGBT community will never stop fighting for his dream to create their own love nest even when
some counterparts do not support the idea of same–sex parenting. Many psychologists,
organizations, children, same–sex parents claim that children who are raised by gay or lesbian
families, develop as well as those peers who are educated and grew up in a traditional family. On the
other hand, some study groups, researchers, Add Health organization, and other adults report that
there is high risk for children to suffer from depression, stigma, and does not behave right in the
same–sex household. Which leaves people asking

their home state California, they were unable to legally wed. Despite this obstacle, they did

considered themselves married. One day to a trip to Washington D.C, Robert had a health

Gay and lesbian loving each other, in a committed relationship, does not threaten stability of
heterosexual marriage. While Bill and Roberts story illuminates some of the problems gay couples

saying that there are well over 1,000 individual rights and benefits which homosexual couples are
denied. Rights that heterosexual couples receive including tax breaks, social security benefits, and
hospital visitation rights, and this is only counting for federal benefits and doesn't factor in the
countless local and state laws, which regulate everything from medical benefits to adoption

Homosexuality can be characterized as sexual attraction towards others of one's own sex. In the
United States of America, laws regarding homosexuality have evolved throughout the years. The
United States is one of the free countries in the world, which other nations admire. America is nation
filled with people of multicultural backgrounds and identities. Homosexuality in today's modern
world is still seen by many people as intolerable and wrong. However, in today's growing society
Homosexuality is beginning to become more accepted and tolerated. Issues surrounding the LGBT
community have resulted in a wide range of political and social forces that have led to the
acceptance and tolerance of homesexuality throughout the years. In traditional cultures, men and
women marry each other and create children together. Same–sex couples were unheard off in the
earlier days, because being attracted to people of one's own sex was seen as an abomination by
Christian churches, which condemned homosexuality. According to statistics, approximately one in
ten American women and two in one hundred American men identify as homosexual. However, in
younger generations homosexuality is morally acceptable and the statistical data on people who are
identifying as homosexual is increasing. In the United States, same–sex marriage is allowed and
recognized in some states, such as New york, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Other states are

Persuasive Essay On Gay Marriage
This issue continues to arise and spark debate year after year and decade after decade however the
facts remain that this issue should simple be answered with a yes due to the fact that all humans
deserve a right to freedom and as such that right to freedom will technically dictate that they will be
given the right to decide any decision they may come across, however on the technical side of
debate the four main theories of morality& religion, ethical naturalism, moral relativism and nihilism
all present a different side and different approach to the issue.
This issue is highly problematic in the sense that a lot of people are wasting time on an issue that
really should not affect the day to day lives of anyone, yet a majority of people still chime in and
create debates against the ideas of gay marriage on the basis of a variety of nonsense that they
choose to follow, In terms of the theories I think I fall into the moral relativism category as I
believe this is a personal choice and anyone should be allowed to make whatever choice they wish,
they should not be affected and prevented from doing so unless it directly leads to damage or harm
to someone else and in the case of gay marriage, it isn't and therefore it would...show more content...

Gay Marriage And The Constitution Essay
Gay Marriage and the Constitution

Gay Marriage and the Constitution Is it okay to not believe in gay marriage, yet at the same time
support the constitutional rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for homosexual couples?
Even though most churches' beliefs conflict with marrying same–sex partners, government should
not deny a person's right to their happiness; because any person, no matter race, color, sex, religion
or sexual orientation, should be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights as Americans to
pursue their happiness; and married gay couples should be able to have a spectrum of rights and
benefits if their gay partnership is legalized.

How long must gays fight for equal rights that they were given at birth as a legal citizen of
America? If gay marriage is legalized, this would mean a restructuring for employers.
Benefits and Rights
If gay marriage is legalized, employers would therefore be affected. Affected in the way that
benefits available to married heterosexuals will then be the same for married gay couples. In the
event of legalizing gay marriage, same–sex married couples will be given a range of benefits that
include employee benefits, inheritance and real estate rights, child custody, emergency health care
procedures and tax laws. (Kuiow, Spring 2001) There are some employers that currently give
domestic partners benefits, at their discretion. However, because there is not a final document of
proof that a gay couple is indeed domestic partners, it makes it difficult for employers and others to
determine what constitutes as a gay partnership. How does one go about in proving that they do in
fact have a spousal equivalent in a same–sex relationship, rather than just a roommate? Granting gays
the right to marriage or the equivalent of being married without the Church being involved would
open up numerous solutions and put the gray areas of gay relationships to rest.
Resolution
As the numbers of gay couples have risen exuberantly in the last two decades, they no doubt

The Same Sex Marriage Debate Essay
The Same Sex Marriage Debate
The controversial debate over whether same sex marriage should be legalized has gained a lot of
attention in recent years and there are strong arguments for each side of the issue. There are many
different factors that must be looked at when considering same–sex marriage. A marriage is not
something that is just slapped on a piece of paper to show a couple's love; it involves legal, social,
economic, and spiritual issues. Throughout this essay, I intend to focus on all of the issues just
mentioned, and how all of these issues are interrelated in some way, shape or form. I will also pay
attention to the state influence on marriage, how one state's decision affects another state's actions,

Although the gay community makes up a small percentage of the American population, they have
and will be very influential in our society. Our society sets many standards for people to live by,
but often times these standards evolve through time in such a way that no one can predict.
Slavery serves as a good example: A survey done in the 1700's of the American colonies would
probably reveal a majority of people felt slavery was alright, some might have even pointed out
that Christians used slavery in the past, as mentioned in the bible. Slowly the black population,
who was clearly the minority, gained more and more support for freedom. While there are still
Americans who do not see the black community as equals, it is safe to say that society as a whole
believes discrimination against blacks is wrong.
While slavery is far more extreme of an issue than homosexuality, the two have some things in
common. For example, during the civil war there were Americans on one side that supported an
amendment to ban slavery and those on the other side who opposed it. Today there are citizens who
support an amendment to ban same sex marriages just as there are those who are against legislation.
Even though the black community sought out the slavery amendment and the gay community is
trying to stop the amendment to ban same sex marriage, both minorities were trying to change a
precedent in society. The gay

Critical essay on gay marriage
To begin, I must admit that I approached David Blankenhorn's book The Future of Marriage with
some trepidation, as I know that he is against extending marriage to same–sex couples. After reading
the book, however, I have to give him credit for approaching the issue with more respect than most
who believe in preserving "family values." He doesn't fall into the easy and usual trap of moralizing
about homosexuality being "wrong," "perverted," or "unnatural." In fact, he goes as far as saying
"homosexual behavior is an important and normal (expected) occurrence in human societies"
(Blankenhorn 115) and "[w]e as a society can and should accept the dignity of homosexual love and
the equal worth of gay and lesbian persons" (179). Such...show more content...
And children born into married households are greatly advantaged. As such, "Marriage is society's
most pro–child institution" (5). In the larger cultural, political, and legal debates over homosexuality,
one significant smaller debate has been over homosexual parents: do children who are raised by
homosexual parents or caregivers suffer disadvantages in comparison to children raised in other
family structures––particularly children raised by a married mother and father? This question is
essential to political and ethical debates over adoption, foster care, and artificial reproductive
technology, and it is highly relevant to the raging debate over same–sex "marriage." The argument
that "children need a mom and a dad" is central to the defense of marriage as the union of one man
and one woman. The research on how child fare in a two–parent household cemented by marriage is
now voluminous. No other type of relationship is as good for children as heterosexual marriage.
Family structure, in other words, matters overwhelmingly for children.
In a historic study of children raised by homosexual parents, sociologist Mark Regnerus of the
University of Texas at Austin has overturned the conventional academic wisdom that such children
suffer no disadvantages when compared to children raised by their married mother and father. Just
published in the journal Social Science Research, a careful, rigorous, and methodologically study

Reflective Essay On Gay Marriage
As a nurse I know that I will have to be aware of any prejudice and biases I may have toward a
certain group of people. There was one instance where the idea of two men together seemed to
bother me. One of my best friends in high school was homosexual and it never concerned me at that
moment. It was fun hanging out with him. I went out with him and his potential new boyfriend to
the movies and it didn't trouble me. After high school we went our separate ways and he moved
away. I started hanging out more with a girlfriend of mine and some of her co–workers are
homosexuals. We would go to a gay club with them and it was enjoyable and pleasant not to have
creepy men trying to hit on us. On the way back home from the club she drove her friend back
with his boyfriend and they started having a make out session in the car. It could have been that it
was my first time seeing two individuals of the same sex behaving romantically. I remember my
friend telling me, "Oh you'll get used to it, I thought it was weird to, but now I am over it." My
friends statement was true I did eventually get over it, this was just something that I have never
experiences before. Additionally, this is a learning experiences for me. Ineed to need to keep an

On Saturday, June 27th, 2015 gay marriage was legalized nationwide by a supreme court ruling. On
Sunday, June 28th, 2015, I went to Via Christi Hospital's Catholic Church with my grandparents,
parents, brother, and great aunt and uncle. What happened that warm Summer's day made me decide
to leave the Catholic Church.
I went to St. Mary Catholic School from pre–3 to 8th grade. In me was instilled a devoutness that
was supposed to last me throughout my life. If it weren't for my dad disliking organized religion
then they would have brainwashed me into being a devote catholic. Free thinking wasn't allowed
and if we didn't agree with the viewpoints that they were trying to teach, then we would get shut
out. When I would disagree with some of the viewpoints all the teachers would say is, "That's a
question for father Jim." The few times I actually asked the questions it seemed as though he
couldn't give me a straight answer. I always thought to myself, "what is the point of believing in an
ideology if you don't have answers to questions that an eight year old comes up with."
The most important thing in life is happiness and I am not going to stop anybody from achieving
that. I'm not talking about getting ice cream happy or having a good day happy, I'm talking about the
happiness that someone feels in the deepest reaches of the soul when they are looking at someone
they love. Being homosexual is natural, it's something that comes at birth. Everytime I think of

Gay Marriage Debate Essay

  • 1. THE GAY MARRIAGE DEBATE CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL ISSUES GROUP 2: BETHANY DOGAN; JONATHAN FERRY; SUSAN FITTS; CLARA GIRALDO MOUNT WASHINGTON COLLEGE Abstract Same–sex relationships date back to Greek and Roman times. They have existed in society for hundreds of years. It was during a culture shift during the Christian revolution that society began to condemn the practice. Our current society is realizing same–sex relationships do exist and have done so regardless of law allowing them to outwardly celebrate their unions. Gay couples have remained secluded in society and covered their living arrangements under feeble explanations and lies. Hiding true feelings and living a lie is destructive to a person's well–being and happiness. Recently the United States took steps to legalize and recognize unions of all types whether they are of opposite–sex or same–sex. Our country stands for equality and freedom so this is only right that our country take this step along with many others around the globe. History of Gay Marriage Today's modern debate over gay marriage has been played by politicians over the past few decades to win and keep the majority vote. The general public is led to believe that this issue has come to light because of modernization and changing beliefs and loosening morals when the fact is homosexuality and gay unions can be traced back to the times of ancient Egypt. Information on gay unions is backed up with the discovery of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Gay Marriage Policy Case Summary The policy case that I reviewed is the Gay marriage showdowns: Will voters bar marriage for same–sex couples? By Kenneth Jost. For many years, there's been debate whether or not homosexual individuals deserve any rights. People tend use the separation church and state as agreement against gay marriage. "Church and state were distinct in that the Federal Government could not elevate one denomination over others. Nor could government and its flawed inhabitants usurp divine authority by harnessing politics to the church. Faith is no civil contract, but a personal matter not to be profaned by politics (Flax, 2011). Churches feels that the US government have no right rendered politics to churches, but there's injustice and inequality within Churches, it than becomes a public problem which can lead to government intervention. Social equity was critical value in this case study because no one, not a Church cannot tell no one who he/she can marry as it is discrimination if people do not have the free will to marry someone of the same sex. [or] deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, [or] deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws (www.law.cornell.edu)." • 3. Gay Marriage Controversy Gay marriage has been a recent controversy for many reasons. Many people (religious conservatives) believe that same–sex marriage is immoral, sinful, and threatens the traditional structure of a family. But gay and lesbian supporters feel marriage is a right that everyone should have, backed by the Due Process and Equal Protection of the Fourteenth Amendment. It has been proven that the outlook on gay marriage has changed drastically based simply on the fact that younger people had supported it and it just took time to gain enough approval from enough of the country to legalize it. Since most of 18–29 year–olds of 2006 supported same–sex marriage, "two–thirds of Americans think that same–sex marriage will eventually be legal in the United...show more content... Murders based on one's sexual orientation is a form of severe discrimination. It was counted that in "the United States, out of the almost 6,000 hate crimes committed in 2013, 20 percent (approximately 1,200) were based on victims' sexual orientation, according to the FBI" (1000s who died in anti–gay, anti–trans attacks (updates). Argumentative Essay on Gay Marriage Wesley King Grammar and Composition lesson 75 Argumentative Essay on Gay Marriage Marriage is the ceremonial binding of two people, male and female, into one couple. Historically, marriage has been the institution when a man and a woman join together with the promise of love, devotion, to always stay together, to be there for each other, to take care of one another and to start a family together. Biblically, marriage has been all the aspects above, but including honoring, loving and growing closer to God and raising their family in ways that the Lord would have them, by abiding to the Word of God. • 5. Gay Marriage Equality Of the many societal customs engrained in humanity, marriage may be one of the most prevalent. For most of history, man and woman have displayed their capacity for affection through this formality; and, for most of history, marriage has been limited to only man and woman. Like marriage, however, homosexuality too has existed for thousands of years. One could even argue that it is simply a part of human nature. Nonetheless, those who identify as anything but heterosexual have been persecuted for hundreds of years. In the United States of America, gay marriage has been legal since 2015 –– and although legal, the opposition persists to this day through politicians and religious groups. For example, while the Constitution of the United States...show more content... Much of the argument lies in the Holy Bible, which is a book written nearly 3500 years ago. While the book does state that man shall not lay with man, it also provides the reader with a plethora of other suggestions. It even discusses the logistics of buying and selling slaves. With that in mind, a large portion of the Bible cannot be taken literally, but instead read for the overall message of the book –– which undoubtedly revolves more so around the themes love and acceptance, rather than discrimination on a basis of sexual identity. This is a concept humanity has failed to grasp for thousands of years, and thus the fight against gay rights continues to this day. When arguing for the sake of equality, however, one must raise the question: if Jesus Christ were alive today, what would he say about gay marriage? Would he use words like "faggot," or "dike,"? Or would he walk with them, as he did with the outcasts and lepers of his time? Religious scholars have yet to debate questions such as these, and for good reason. Jesus was more concerned with love than discrimination; to deny that would raise questions of literacy and comprehension. To examine love as a concept, however, is a crucial step in understanding marriage Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This topic caught my attention because several of my family members including the newest member my older sister, are now considered a part of the homosexual community, and it seems as time goes on this population continues to grow. For the past thousand years, marriage has been recognized as the social union between man and woman. Same–sex marriage is the legal union between two people of the same gender. Throughout history, same sex unions have taken place around the world, but laws recognizing such marriages did not start occurring until more modern times. In most cultures across the world, homosexuality was viewed as wrong, and marriages between same–sex couples were forbidden. The issue of gay marriage has been a raging battle since the late twentieth century. The individual States are left to determine the laws that govern this situation today. Gays and other liberals feel that they have a right to join together in harmony, while the conservative groups in the United States fight this situation persistently. Gay marriage can be a touchy subject for some and the way people were brought up could ultimately affect their views and opinions. They become representative of large worldview and clearly emphasize the battle between divergent moral and spiritual perspectives. Homosexual marriage in the United States is one of these issues. In the past five years, there have been various threats and debates about the possibility of legalizing homosexual union. The issue took centre stage in February largely. Some religious leaders think it could become more difficult legally to lecture against homosexuality if the nation were to support same sex marriage as a fundamental right. Major religious organizations have issued warnings, including concerned women for America, focus on the family and the liberty counsel, and Orlando based group that has become a national leader in the fight against same– sex marriage. • 8. Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized? Essay Introduction What does it mean to be gay and why does society discriminate against those who are deemed to be gay? This paper establishes that being gay is primarily based on the supposition that one is either homosexual, transgender, lesbian, or bisexual. It also establishes that one of the primary reasons why gays are discriminated against within the society is religion; that some of the views held by different religious conclaves substantiate gay rejection by the society. On a more personal rather than institutional level, this paper also reveals that the culture of gay is also largely rebuked based on individual philosophies and moral standings which is precisely the min reason as to why hate crimes against gays have in the past found a substantive projection. In the American socio–cultural fabric, the emergence of gays has generated a continuous debate about gay marriage; essentially whether it should be legalized or not. The debate has pitted religion verses gay rights activists who base their arguments on the equal rights protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the US Constitution. In conclusion, this paper will elaborate on some of the some of the states that have inherently legalized gay marriage, the projection of the issue five years from today, and how society can assist in making the world a better place for gays. Background on Homosexuality For purposes of coherence, the word gay will be periodically interchanged with the phrase homosexual. To Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay on Gay marriage Critical Review – Gay Marriage "Unnatural" Sheldon L, 1996, Gay Marriage "Unnatural", USA Today, USA. Homosexual marriage is one of the old but controversial issues around the world. Compared to the past, it seems to become a more open debate among people. At the same time, people seem to be more swayable than before, but towards the gay marriage, different voices have still been hovering in the air. Gay people and their supporters have been striving for their rights to get married legally, while others who against gay marriage have never stopped deterring it. Strongly against gay marriage is the central theme of Louis P. Sheldon's article Gay Marriage "Unnatural". According to the author's views, gay marriage is 'unnatural', and...show more content... In my view, it would be more convincing for example to try referencing the data in his claims like the quoted above as well as the gay people's average income is twice higher than that of non–gay people in America, and his figures will not be questioned. The author of this article can therefore be criticised here for a lack of citation of sources to back up his views. Another questionable aspect of this article is its hidden premises. Although the author does not openly state that the marriage should be generational, otherwise they should get divorce, this could be understood from the authors's statement that gay marriage is "not generational". While marriage is not only about generating offspring but also means love. It is an insulting claim for the couples who in love but unfortunately could not have children might because fertility problems, health issues, over age, their chosen life style of Dink family, so do they have to separate with each other just because of that? Is it really the essence of marriage? I do not think so. • 10. The Debate On Gay Marriage I.Introduction to Moral Dispute: Gay Marriage Contemporary moral disputes are constantly ongoing around the world and in the United States. For hundreds of years marriage has been defined as the legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman as partners in a relationship. Up until relatively recently the debate on gay marriage has not been a popular topic. Gay marriage has been illegal in the US and most countries around the world up until the early 2000s.[1] The debate on gay marriage has grown with more and more people publicly speaking and giving their opinions on it, especially in the Unites States. II.Opposing Views Gay marriage has been largely opposed in the US for years now for several different reasons that mostly...show more content... [3] The strong support of this argument by religious figures, such as the Pope, makes this a strong argument for the opposing side. However, in more recent years Pope Francis has made a slightly less opposing statement, when he said "Who am I to judge a gay person?" [4] Showing how times have certainly changed in regards to view on homosexual people. American historian Harry Jaffa agreed with this idea that being gay is not natural, he then argues that if people think that this is natural than many other 'bad' things are also natural. Jaffa believes, "if sodomy is not unnatural, nothing is unnatural. And if nothing is unnatural, then nothing – including slavery and genocide – is unjust". [5]Jaffa argues that homosexuality is not natural because the only natural reason for relationships, according to the bible, is to have children. So, these arguments that homosexuality is unnatural and deviant (once again based off of the bible and religion) couple with the argument that the purpose for marriage, as defined by religion and the bible, is to reproduce, and since two men or two women cannot reproduce they should not be able to wed. An obvious continuation to this argument is the idea that by legalizing gay marriage it is giving the approval of homosexual Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Argumentative Essay On Gay Marriage Homosexuality has been a sensitive topic and risen a lot of controversial opinions when some states approved same–sex marriage laws. Although same–sex marriage is against the traditional family structure previously established, many people think it has to be dealing with a more equal and integrating focus. Therefore, they think they should be accepted into society and treated with the same opportunities and rights. As a human, the individual seeks mostly the same goal, to build a family. And this goal is set regardless of gender, age, beliefs background and other factors. Since some states have qualified homosexual people to be merited with the same benefits as others; therefore, gay, and lesbian people look forward to having kids after they marry. Leading to the outburst of debating whether same–sex parents are able to raise a good family. A person who is in the LGBT community will never stop fighting for his dream to create their own love nest even when some counterparts do not support the idea of same–sex parenting. Many psychologists, organizations, children, same–sex parents claim that children who are raised by gay or lesbian families, develop as well as those peers who are educated and grew up in a traditional family. On the other hand, some study groups, researchers, Add Health organization, and other adults report that there is high risk for children to suffer from depression, stigma, and does not behave right in the same–sex household. • 13. Argumentative Essay On Gay Marriage Homosexuality can be characterized as sexual attraction towards others of one's own sex. In the United States of America, laws regarding homosexuality have evolved throughout the years. The United States is one of the free countries in the world, which other nations admire. America is nation filled with people of multicultural backgrounds and identities. Homosexuality in today's modern world is still seen by many people as intolerable and wrong. However, in today's growing society Homosexuality is beginning to become more accepted and tolerated. Issues surrounding the LGBT community have resulted in a wide range of political and social forces that have led to the acceptance and tolerance of homesexuality throughout the years. In traditional cultures, men and women marry each other and create children together. Same–sex couples were unheard off in the earlier days, because being attracted to people of one's own sex was seen as an abomination by Christian churches, which condemned homosexuality. According to statistics, approximately one in ten American women and two in one hundred American men identify as homosexual. However, in younger generations homosexuality is morally acceptable and the statistical data on people who are identifying as homosexual is increasing. In the United States, same–sex marriage is allowed and recognized in some states, such as New york, Connecticut and New Hampshire. • 14. Persuasive Essay On Gay Marriage This issue continues to arise and spark debate year after year and decade after decade however the facts remain that this issue should simple be answered with a yes due to the fact that all humans deserve a right to freedom and as such that right to freedom will technically dictate that they will be given the right to decide any decision they may come across, however on the technical side of debate the four main theories of morality& religion, ethical naturalism, moral relativism and nihilism all present a different side and different approach to the issue. This issue is highly problematic in the sense that a lot of people are wasting time on an issue that really should not affect the day to day lives of anyone, yet a majority of people still chime in and create debates against the ideas of gay marriage on the basis of a variety of nonsense that they choose to follow, In terms of the theories I think I fall into the moral relativism category as I believe this is a personal choice and anyone should be allowed to make whatever choice they wish, they should not be affected and prevented from doing so unless it directly leads to damage or harm to someone else and in the case of gay marriage, it isn't and therefore it would...show more content... Even though most churches' beliefs conflict with marrying same–sex partners, government should not deny a person's right to their happiness; because any person, no matter race, color, sex, religion or sexual orientation, should be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights as Americans to pursue their happiness; and married gay couples should be able to have a spectrum of rights and benefits if their gay partnership is legalized. If gay marriage is legalized, this would mean a restructuring for employers. Benefits and Rights If gay marriage is legalized, employers would therefore be affected. Affected in the way that benefits available to married heterosexuals will then be the same for married gay couples. In the event of legalizing gay marriage, same–sex married couples will be given a range of benefits that include employee benefits, inheritance and real estate rights, child custody, emergency health care procedures and tax laws. (Kuiow, Spring 2001) There are some employers that currently give domestic partners benefits, at their discretion. However, because there is not a final document of proof that a gay couple is indeed domestic partners, it makes it difficult for employers and others to determine what constitutes as a gay partnership. How does one go about in proving that they do in fact have a spousal equivalent in a same–sex relationship, rather than just a roommate? Granting gays the right to marriage or the equivalent of being married without the Church being involved would open up numerous solutions and put the gray areas of gay relationships to rest. A marriage is not something that is just slapped on a piece of paper to show a couple's love; it involves legal, social, economic, and spiritual issues. Throughout this essay, I intend to focus on all of the issues just mentioned, and how all of these issues are interrelated in some way, shape or form. I will also pay attention to the state influence on marriage, how one state's decision affects another state's actions, and last how the...show more content... Although the gay community makes up a small percentage of the American population, they have and will be very influential in our society. Our society sets many standards for people to live by, but often times these standards evolve through time in such a way that no one can predict. Slavery serves as a good example: A survey done in the 1700's of the American colonies would probably reveal a majority of people felt slavery was alright, some might have even pointed out that Christians used slavery in the past, as mentioned in the bible. Slowly the black population, who was clearly the minority, gained more and more support for freedom. While there are still Americans who do not see the black community as equals, it is safe to say that society as a whole believes discrimination against blacks is wrong. While slavery is far more extreme of an issue than homosexuality, the two have some things in common. For example, during the civil war there were Americans on one side that supported an amendment to ban slavery and those on the other side who opposed it. Today there are citizens who support an amendment to ban same sex marriages just as there are those who are against legislation. Even though the black community sought out the slavery amendment and the gay community is trying to stop the amendment to ban same sex marriage, both minorities were trying to change a precedent in society. • 17. Critical essay on gay marriage To begin, I must admit that I approached David Blankenhorn's book The Future of Marriage with some trepidation, as I know that he is against extending marriage to same–sex couples. After reading the book, however, I have to give him credit for approaching the issue with more respect than most who believe in preserving "family values." He doesn't fall into the easy and usual trap of moralizing about homosexuality being "wrong," "perverted," or "unnatural." In fact, he goes as far as saying "homosexual behavior is an important and normal (expected) occurrence in human societies" (Blankenhorn 115) and "[w]e as a society can and should accept the dignity of homosexual love and the equal worth of gay and lesbian persons" (179). In the larger cultural, political, and legal debates over homosexuality, one significant smaller debate has been over homosexual parents: do children who are raised by homosexual parents or caregivers suffer disadvantages in comparison to children raised in other family structures––particularly children raised by a married mother and father? This question is essential to political and ethical debates over adoption, foster care, and artificial reproductive technology, and it is highly relevant to the raging debate over same–sex "marriage." The argument that "children need a mom and a dad" is central to the defense of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The research on how child fare in a two–parent household cemented by marriage is now voluminous. No other type of relationship is as good for children as heterosexual marriage. Family structure, in other words, matters overwhelmingly for children. In a historic study of children raised by homosexual parents, sociologist Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas at Austin has overturned the conventional academic wisdom that such children suffer no disadvantages when compared to children raised by their married mother and father. • 18. Reflective Essay On Gay Marriage As a nurse I know that I will have to be aware of any prejudice and biases I may have toward a certain group of people. There was one instance where the idea of two men together seemed to bother me. One of my best friends in high school was homosexual and it never concerned me at that moment. It was fun hanging out with him. I went out with him and his potential new boyfriend to the movies and it didn't trouble me. After high school we went our separate ways and he moved away. I started hanging out more with a girlfriend of mine and some of her co–workers are homosexuals. We would go to a gay club with them and it was enjoyable and pleasant not to have creepy men trying to hit on us. On the way back home from the club she drove her friend back with his boyfriend and they started having a make out session in the car. It could have been that it was my first time seeing two individuals of the same sex behaving romantically. I remember my friend telling me, "Oh you'll get used to it, I thought it was weird to, but now I am over it." My friends statement was true I did eventually get over it, this was just something that I have never experiences before. Additionally, this is a learning experiences for me. Ineed to need to keep an open mind and although it may see unusual to me I shouldn't disapprove right away, without giving it a chance. Now when I see two same sex individuals it's like nothing and I applaud them for standing up for love. Moreover, I do tend to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Gay Marriage Argument Paper "On June the 26, 2015 after many years of debating, gay marriage was made legal according to the US Constitution. This meant that all 50 states must allow gay marriage, and any previous bans were null and void."(Gay Marriage in the US Supreme Court, 2015. par 1) After this bill passed, clergy and business owners were expected to perform certain duties that compromised their religious beliefs. Because of this, the First and Fourteenth Amendment were looked at more closely to determine exactly what rights citizens have. "The First Amendment states that" Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." • 20. Argumentative Essay On Gay Marriage On Saturday, June 27th, 2015 gay marriage was legalized nationwide by a supreme court ruling. On Sunday, June 28th, 2015, I went to Via Christi Hospital's Catholic Church with my grandparents, parents, brother, and great aunt and uncle. What happened that warm Summer's day made me decide to leave the Catholic Church. I went to St. Mary Catholic School from pre–3 to 8th grade. In me was instilled a devoutness that was supposed to last me throughout my life. If it weren't for my dad disliking organized religion then they would have brainwashed me into being a devote catholic. Free thinking wasn't allowed and if we didn't agree with the viewpoints that they were trying to teach, then we would get shut out. When I would disagree with some of the viewpoints all the teachers would say is, "That's a question for father Jim." The few times I actually asked the questions it seemed as though he couldn't give me a straight answer. I always thought to myself, "what is the point of believing in an ideology if you don't have answers to questions that an eight year old comes up with." The most important thing in life is happiness and I am not going to stop anybody from achieving that. I'm not talking about getting ice cream happy or having a good day happy, I'm talking about the happiness that someone feels in the deepest reaches of the soul when they are looking at someone they love. Being homosexual is natural, it's something that comes at birth. Everytime I think of someone that is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
