ZFS is the next generation filesystem originally developed at Sun Microsystems. Available under the CDDL, it uniquely combines volume manager and filesystem into a powerful storage management solution for Unix systems. Regardless of big or small storage requirements. ZFS offers features, for free, that are usually found only in costly enterprise storage solutions. This talk will introduce ZFS and give an overview of its features like snapshots and rollback, compression, deduplication as well as replication. We will demonstrate how these features can make a difference in the datacenter, giving administrators the power and flexibility to adapt to changing storage requirements. Real world examples of ZFS being used in production for video streaming, virtualization, archival, and research are shown to illustrate the concepts. The talk is intended for people considering ZFS for their data storage needs and those who are interested in the features ZFS provides.

Full Disk Encryption (FDE) may be rather useful as a defense mechanism against potential theft of a computer system. Usually such protections comes with some levels of hardening like removing administrative rights. However, when the system is compromised and requires careful forensic analysis, FDE and hardening can be quite painful to forensic analysts. Software is often improved incrementally. Each software optimization should be assessed with microbenchmarks. In a microbenchmark, we record performance measures such as elapsed time or instruction counts during specific tasks, often in idealized conditions. In principle, the process is easy: if the new code is faster, we adopt it. Unfortunately, there are many pitfalls, such as unrealistic statistical assumptions and poorly designed benchmarks. Abstractions like cloud computing add further challenges. We illustrate effective benchmarking practices with examples.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
