1. King Street Station Rehabilitation Project Phase 2 In this slide show: Jackson Plaza demolition 4th floor fire sprinkler installation August 30, 2010 Update
2. Looking north at S Jackson St. and 2nd Ave. Ext. as demolition of King Street Station’s Jackson Plaza begins.
3. A close-up of the areas where asphalt and concrete have been removed, exposing the original steel structural beams.
12. Below the Plaza is an extension of King Street Station’s first floor north of the waiting and ticketing area.
13. Another view of the Station’s first floor below the Plaza and 2nd floor. Eventually, this will be a new baggage, ticket and office space for Amtrak, allowing expansion of the existing waiting area.
14. The old steel structural beams have been taken down and lay in a heap just right of center. The yellow beams temporarily support the existing walls until the new Plaza structure is installed.
15. The view from the top of what will be the restored Grand Staircase leading from the main waiting area onto the new Jackson Plaza and out to S Jackson St.
16. A close-up of equipment and debris to be cleared from the site.
17. This south view shows how the Plaza and 1st floor space below it will connect to the Station. On the far right of the station is where the Grand Staircase will connect to the Plaza.
18. This area must be cleared to allow installation of new structural beams, and the Station’s new geothermal wells to be used for heating and cooling.
23. With the Plaza’s structural beams removed, these yellow support beams ensure the walls are stable.
24. Another view of the support beams facing west toward King St. Center building.
25. Facing south toward the station, in the center of the building, framed with wood, is the second floor Station entrance from the Plaza.
26. The gray/blue beams attached to the wall will support a restored Station canopy.
27. The east wall of the Station is adjacent to the Amtrak platform. This wall supports the Plaza and is temporarily shored with yellow beams.
28. Another view of the Station’s east wall on the first floor on which the Plaza will rest.
29. In preparation for utility work on the west side of the Station near the King St. entrance workers remove sidewalk bricks and stack them for storage until they are replaced.
31. A trench is dug on the west side of the station north of the King St. entrance for installation of utilities.
32. Among the Station’s 4th floor steel structural beams and wooden roof planks are the thin, gray pipes of a newly installed fire-suppression sprinkler system .
33. A close-up of the 4th floor fire-suppression sprinklers.
35. The sprinkler system is part of a larger update of the Station’s mechanical systems that is part of the restoration and certification of King Street Station as a LEED building.
36. The sprinklers’ thin gray lines can be lost among the massive black steel supporting the roof.
