In collaboration with participating faculty at California State University Northridge, Oviatt Library Research Fellows have developed a pilot that facilitates both course and information literacy objectives. Using Scalar, an open source semantic Web-authoring program, the Guided Resource Inquiry Tool (GRI) combines assignment prompts, digitized primary sources and digital information literacy media into a single online interface. The GRI leverages renewed pedagogical interest in ‘knowledge synthesis’ by placing documentary evidence as the point of departure for critical inquiry. The tool incorporates materials from archival and digital collections repositories to supply content for course assignments. The GRI contains links to existing archives and information literacy resources that teach students as they complete the assignment. Specific benefits include: 1) archives and information literacy instruction within an applied research context; 2) course learning through critical analysis of primary documents, 3) extended outreach for digital collections and archival repositories; 4) 24/7 access to the GRI assignment online; 5) no limits on class size, 6) integrated exposure to finding aid and secondary source databases as well as Special Collections patron protocols. In the undergraduate engineering program at Griffith University in Australia, the unit 1006ENG Design and Professional Skills aims to provide an introduction to engineering design and professional practice through a project-based learning (PBL) approach to problem solving. It provides students with an experience of PBL in the first-year of their programme. The unit comprises an underpinning lecture series, design work including group project activities, an individual computer-aided drawing exercise/s and an oral presentation. Griffith University employs a ‘Student Experience of Course’ (SEC) online survey as part of its student evaluation of teaching, quality improvement and staff performance management processes. As well as numerical response scale items, it includes the following two questions inviting open-ended text responses from students: i) What did you find particularly good about this course? and ii) How could this course be improved? The collection of textual data in in student surveys is commonplace, due to the rich descriptions of respondent experiences they can provide at relatively low cost. However, historically these data have been underutilised because they are time consuming to analyse manually, and there has been a lack of automated tools to exploit such data efficiently. Text analytics approaches offer analysis methods that result in visual representations of comment data that highlight key individual themes in these data and the relationships between those themes. We present a text analytics-based evaluation of the SEC open-ended comments received in the first two years of offer of the PBL unit 1006ENG. We discuss the results obtained in detail. The method developed and documented here is a practical and useful approach to analysing/visualising open-ended comment data that could be applied by others with similar comment data sets.

Presented at the SoundSoftware 2012 Workshop: http://soundsoftware.ac.uk/soundsoftware2012 Sustainable and reusable software and data are becoming increasingly important in today's research environment. Methods for processing audio and music have become so complex they cannot fully be described in a research paper. Even if really useful research is being done in one research group, other researchers may find it hard to build on this research - or even to know it exists. Researchers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to publish and maintain software code alongside their results, but practical barriers often prevent this from happening. We will describe the Sound Software project, an effort to support software development practice in the UK audio and music research community. We examine some of the the barriers to software reuse, and suggest an incremental approach to overcoming some of them. Finally we make some recommendations for research groups seeking to improve their own researchers' software practice.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
