All-America
Selections
A Brief overview
What is All-America Selections (AAS)?
• Founded in 1932, AAS is the only national, non-profit plant trialing
organization in North America.
• Our mission statement is: “To promote new garden varieties with superior
garden performance judged in impartial trials in North America.”
• AAS does not breed, or sell, any plants.
AAS conducts four types of plant trials each year
to determine if there are new varieties worthy of the
AAS Winner award designation:
EDIBLES (FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES) GROWN
FROM SEED IN-GROUND
AND IN CONTAINERS
PERENNIALS SEED ORNAMENTALS
GROWN IN-GROUND AND
IN CONTAINERS
NON-SEED
ORNAMENTALS GROWN
IN-GROUND AND IN
CONTAINERS
AAS Trial
Grounds
These trials are
conducted at trial
grounds across North
America by volunteer
independent, unbiased,
horticulture
professionals – our AAS
Judges!
Entering the
Trials
Breeders enter their new,
never-before sold cultivars to
see if they have created a
variety that is superior to
what is currently on the
home garden market.
Judging
•AAS Judges grow and evaluate
these entries alongside well-
known, successful varieties used
as comparisons.
•If the entry variety out-
performs the comparison
varieties and is deemed superior
to what is currently available to
home gardeners, it is awarded
the AAS Winner designation.
Judging
•AAS Judges look for some
of the following traits:
•More flowers
•Better branching
•Disease resistance
•Better taste (veggies)
•Higher yield
•Unique/new colors
•Proudly display the AAS Winner logo
•Are listed on the AAS website
•Are promoted by AAS on social media
•Are written about by garden writers
•Are provided to public gardens
participating in the AAS Display
Garden program.
