the en and in modern warfare its smooth execution can only
be possible by hard work and thorough knowledge of its
basic techs. The comprehensive trg in minor ops of war is
the backbone of success in the battlefield.

7. PART-I
Definition of Raid
Raid is an attk by a force to accomplish
a specific purpose with in the en posn with no
intension of holding the invaded objective.
8. Types of Raid
The raid msns are divided into fol two parts: Short Term Raid.
In short term msn, the raiding force is req to stay
in the en area for a very short Pd.
Long Term Raid.
The force has to penetrate deep into the en area
and stay there for a long Pd. A raid msn more than two
days can be categorized under this type.
9. Purposes of Raid
A raid of a pl str may be conducted to: Capture Prisoners.
Capture or destroy specific en pers or material.
Obtain specific info about enemy localities, str,
disposns and intentions.

14. Phases of Raid
Raid op have fol three phases: Preparatory Phase.
Execution Phase.
Disengagement and Wdr Phase.
15. Preparatory Phase
The under mentioned are essential actions which
a raiding force Ldr must complete in this phase:
Max possible info about the tgt.
Adequate time for recce.
Pers sel
Wpn and eqpt.
Ration & clo.
Rehearsals.
16. Execution Phase
This phase covers all the actions which are carried
out in two stages as under: Mov from FDLs/hide out to the RV and action in the RV.

17. Action Group
It consists of the fol parties:-
Fwd Command Party
Composed of the Comd, his runner, operator and is resp to con
the entire op.
Sentry Disposal Party
Normally two men are emp. One disposes off the sentry while
second covers him. It’s no would vary according to the no of sentries
in the tgt area.
Action Party
This party is resp to carry out the final msn that is destruction of
a tgt. The str of this party will depend upon the size and type of tgt.
Special Task Party
Any spec task which is not undertaken by the above parties such
as, destroying of automatic wpns on fixed lines, comd vehs wrls set
and cutting of tel lines etc.
Holding Party
Carries LMG sited at a reasonable distance with a task to bring
eff fire on en pers who may directly interfere with the action party.
18. Covering Group
It comprises of the fol parties: -
Rear Comd Party.
Normally consists of 2IC, to take over
in case of comd becomes a casuality.
Covering Party.
The task of this party is to provide
secure base from which the action gp will develop its raid on the
objective. It is also resp to cover the wdr of the action gp.
Reserve Party.
Elms not emp in action or covering gps
will constitute this party. This is req to meet any unforeseen sit
which may develop during the conduct of the raid and rapid wdr.
Flank Protection Party. To protect the exposed flanks
and blocks the reinforcement/escape.
19. Disengagement and Wdr Phase
This is the most difficult phase and success of entire op
depends upon the raid comd ability to make timely decision for
disengagement on completion of the task and on skill of indl gps comd
to move their men with speed to rallying pt. Parties and gps should be
able to cover the wdr of each other by covering fire if possible,
otherwise this should be arranged within each gp/party during their
wdr. Wdr is the most difficult phase of raid op and normally carried out
in two stages as under:-
First Stage
From site to pre-selected RV at reasonably safe distance
(800-1000 m) depending upon the gr and en disposns.
Sec Stage
From RV to hideout or Bn HQ.
20. CONCLUSION
Properly planned and executed raid pays dividend out of all
proportions to the resources used. It is a hazardous op and as such
demands physical fitness from all indls taking part which can be
achieved by intensive trg. Collection of max info and planning are
essential for the success. Max use of surprise and shock action
coupled with max freedom allowed to raiding force comd have dir
