THE HUNGER GAMES
PRODUCTION
 In March 2009, Lions Gate Entertainment
e n t e r e d i n t o a c o - p r o d u c t i o n a g r e e me n t
for The Hunger Games with
production company Color Force.
 A l l i S h e a r mu r a n d J i m M i l l e r , P r e s i d e n t a n d
Senior Vice President of Motion Picture
Production at Lionsgate, took charge of
o v e r s e e i n g t h e p r o d u c ti o n o f t h e f i l m .
 L i o n s g a t e s u b s equ ent l y a c q u i r e d t a x b r e a k s
of $8 million for shooting the film in North
Carolina. The production was eventually brought
in under-budget at $78 million.
 Suzanne Collins adapted the novel for film
herself in collaboration with screenwriter Billy
R a y a n d d i r e c t or G a r y R o s s .
 The screenplay remains extremely faithful to
the original novel.
FILMING
 Gary Ross became director in November 2010.

production.
 Lawrence dyed her blonde hair dark for the
p a r t o f K a t n i s s . S h e a l s o u n d e r w e n t e x t e n si v e
training to get in shape for the role, including
archery, rock and tree climbing, combat, running,
parkour, and yoga.
 With an initial budget of $75 million , principal
photography began near Brevard in Transylvania
County in Western North Carolina in May 2011 and concluded on September 15,
2011, with a final budget reported as between $90 and $100 million, reduced to $78
million after subsidies.

BOX OFFICE
 The Hunger Games earned $408,010,692 in
North America, and $283,237,076 in other countries,
for a worldwide total of $691,247,768.
 It made the largest worldwide opening weekend
for a film not released during the summer or the
holiday period, earning $211.8 million.
 In North America, The Hunger Games is the
14th-highest-grossing film, the highest-grossing film
released outside the summer or holiday period, and the
highest-grossing film distributed by Lionsgate.
 The film set a midnight-gross record for a non-sequel
making $19.7 million.
 On its opening day, it topped the box office $67.3 million.
 It became the 14th movie to pass the $400 -million-mark.
 On April 20, 2012, Lionsgate and IMAX Corporation
announced that due to "overwhelming demand",
The Hunger Games would return to North American
IMAX cinemas on April 27 for a further one -week engagement.
 On its first weekend the film topped the box office outside North America with $59.25 million from
67 markets.
 The largest opening weekends were recorded in:
 China - $9.6 million
 Australia - $9.48 million
 UK, Ireland and Malta - $7.78 million
 In total earnings, its highest -grossing markets after North America are the UK, Ireland and Malta
($36.5 million), Australia ($31.1 million), and Germany ($20.0 million ).
MARKETING
 Movie promotion is becoming increasingly on
the Web, where studios are using social media
such as Facebook and Twitter and many other
inexpensive yet ef fective online techniques.
 Lionsgate used all the usual old -media tricks
giving away 80,000 poster s, securing almost 50
magazine cover stories, adver tising on 3,000
billboards and bus shelter s.
 To attract younger audiences they used
Facebook and Twitter, a YouTube channel, a
Tumblr blog, iPhone games and live Yahoo
streaming from the premiere .
 Lionsgate had a marketing staf f of 21 people
working with a relatively tiny budget of about
$45 million.
 They assigned one team member to cultivate
“Hunger Games” fan blogs.
HOME MEDIA
 The film was released in North America and the Netherlands
on DVD and Blu-ray Disc August 18, 2012, and in the rest of
Europe on September 3, 2012.
 Extras include 'The World is Watching: The Making of The
Hunger Games', numerous features, the propaganda video in
its entire form, a talk with the director Gary Ross and also
Elvis Mitchell and a marketing archive.
 In its first weekend on sale, Lionsgate reported that 3.8
million DVD/Blu-ray Disc copies of the movie were sold, with
more than one-third in the Blu-ray Disc format.
 Three weeks after the release of the movie to home media
formats in the US, over 5 million DVD units and 3.7 million
Blu-ray Disc units have been sold . With 7,434,058 units sold,
the DVD became the top -selling DVD of 2012

The Hunger Games

  • 2. PRODUCTION  In March 2009, Lions Gate Entertainment e n t e r e d i n t o a c o - p r o d u c t i o n a g r e e me n t for The Hunger Games with production company Color Force.  A l l i S h e a r mu r a n d J i m M i l l e r , P r e s i d e n t a n d Senior Vice President of Motion Picture Production at Lionsgate, took charge of o v e r s e e i n g t h e p r o d u c ti o n o f t h e f i l m .  L i o n s g a t e s u b s equ ent l y a c q u i r e d t a x b r e a k s of $8 million for shooting the film in North Carolina. The production was eventually brought in under-budget at $78 million.  Suzanne Collins adapted the novel for film herself in collaboration with screenwriter Billy R a y a n d d i r e c t or G a r y R o s s .  The screenplay remains extremely faithful to the original novel.
  • 3. FILMING  Gary Ross became director in November 2010.  F i r e ma n 's F u n d I n s u r a n c e C o m p a n y i n s u r e d t h e production.  Lawrence dyed her blonde hair dark for the p a r t o f K a t n i s s . S h e a l s o u n d e r w e n t e x t e n si v e training to get in shape for the role, including archery, rock and tree climbing, combat, running, parkour, and yoga.  With an initial budget of $75 million , principal photography began near Brevard in Transylvania County in Western North Carolina in May 2011 and concluded on September 15, 2011, with a final budget reported as between $90 and $100 million, reduced to $78 million after subsidies.  F o r b e s m a g a z i n e e s t i m a t e d t h a t t h e s t a t e e c o n o my g a i n e d u p t o $ 6 0 m i l l i o n f r o m the production, with over 5,000 people employed as extras, crew and support staff.  M a n y o f t h e u r b a n a n d i n t e r i o r l o c a t i o n s , i n t h e C a p i t o l a n d e l s e w h er e, w e r e filmed in Shelby and Charlotte.  F o r K a t n i s s ' n e i g h b o u r h o o d i n D i s t r i c t 1 2 , t h e p r o d u c ti o n t e a m f o u n d H e n r y R i v e r Mill Village, an abandoned mill town.

BOX OFFICE  The Hunger Games earned $408,010,692 in North America, and $283,237,076 in other countries, for a worldwide total of $691,247,768.  It made the largest worldwide opening weekend for a film not released during the summer or the holiday period, earning $211.8 million.  In North America, The Hunger Games is the 14th-highest-grossing film, the highest-grossing film released outside the summer or holiday period, and the highest-grossing film distributed by Lionsgate.  The film set a midnight-gross record for a non-sequel making $19.7 million.  On its opening day, it topped the box office $67.3 million.  It became the 14th movie to pass the $400 -million-mark.  On April 20, 2012, Lionsgate and IMAX Corporation announced that due to "overwhelming demand", The Hunger Games would return to North American IMAX cinemas on April 27 for a further one -week engagement.  On its first weekend the film topped the box office outside North America with $59.25 million from 67 markets.  The largest opening weekends were recorded in:  China - $9.6 million  Australia - $9.48 million  UK, Ireland and Malta - $7.78 million  In total earnings, its highest -grossing markets after North America are the UK, Ireland and Malta ($36.5 million), Australia ($31.1 million), and Germany ($20.0 million ).
  • 6. MARKETING  Movie promotion is becoming increasingly on the Web, where studios are using social media such as Facebook and Twitter and many other inexpensive yet ef fective online techniques.  Lionsgate used all the usual old -media tricks giving away 80,000 poster s, securing almost 50 magazine cover stories, adver tising on 3,000 billboards and bus shelter s.  To attract younger audiences they used Facebook and Twitter, a YouTube channel, a Tumblr blog, iPhone games and live Yahoo streaming from the premiere .  Lionsgate had a marketing staf f of 21 people working with a relatively tiny budget of about $45 million.  They assigned one team member to cultivate “Hunger Games” fan blogs.

HOME MEDIA  The film was released in North America and the Netherlands on DVD and Blu-ray Disc August 18, 2012, and in the rest of Europe on September 3, 2012.  Extras include 'The World is Watching: The Making of The Hunger Games', numerous features, the propaganda video in its entire form, a talk with the director Gary Ross and also Elvis Mitchell and a marketing archive.  In its first weekend on sale, Lionsgate reported that 3.8 million DVD/Blu-ray Disc copies of the movie were sold, with more than one-third in the Blu-ray Disc format.  Three weeks after the release of the movie to home media formats in the US, over 5 million DVD units and 3.7 million Blu-ray Disc units have been sold . With 7,434,058 units sold, the DVD became the top -selling DVD of 2012
