American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoia During the late sixteenth century, the French took an early lead in the fur trade by establishing a summer presence at Tadoussac. The French traders developed alliances because of this.  The mariners would by fur from Indians and offered manufactured goods to them such as beads, kettles, and knives.  In 1610, The alliance brought on by the French caused the Iroquois to obtain metal weapons from the Dutch. They attacked the small French colony on the St. Lawrence. The French made dangerous enemies because of the fur trade.  The fur trade pitted the Indians against one another in destructive competition.
American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoia Canada: 	- French had put their focus on moving up north for the fur trade. They decided to go to Canada.  	- in 1609, Champlain and nine French soldiers joined a large allied war party the attack the Iroquois.  	- This grew the fur trade more competitive because officials fibbed the sale of guns to Indians.
American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoia The Five nations were especially allies with the French.  Even though they were alliances/ enemies, they relied on each other during most of the 17th century.  The Indians had better quality goods than the French.
American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoia The Jesuits played a role for the French colonies in North America.  They spread the word of god to the Indians and tried to convert them into Christianity.  Some missionaries would live with some tribes to get to know their culture and language to teach them and convert them.
American Colonies 16 – French America French immigrants were sent to America to form new colonies and to live a better life.  The French claimed and affected more of the continent than any other empire.  The French had farming  Maintained a good alliance with the Indians as long as the trading stayed stable and ran smoothly.

In 1650 = 700 colonists In 1663 = 3000 colonists By 1660, the English had 58,000 colonists in New England and the Chesapeake French trader married native women, which gave them predominance in the fur trade In 1701, Iroquois made a peace that conceded the upper country to the French and their allies
American Colonies 16 – French America New Orleans became the colony’s largest town, seaport and government headquarters The French colonies reflected a more militaristic, paternalistic, and centralized form of authority  Noble birth and aristocratic honor, rather than acquired wealth, were the primary criteria of status and authority in New France
American Colonies 16 – French America Selective settlement divided the vast colony of Louisiana into two very different landscapes:  	- a small plantation core remade by settlers 	- an immense hinterland dominated by Indians Exposed to alcohol, disease, and violence, the Petite Nations dwindled from 24,000 in 1685 to just 4,000 in 1730 In 1717 a Canadian official states that the trade with the Indians are a necessary commerce.
