2. Gotye – Like Drawing Blood
I have decided to deconstruct Gotye’s album, Like Drawing Blood.
As I have found that it contrasts with other Singer/Songwriter
albums I have looked at.
3. The first thing which is noticeably
different is the artwork. The colours
of Goyte’s digipack are quite drab
and also suggest a dark side, as
the artwork has been giving a blood
stained effect. This is making
reference to the title.
Instead of having the artwork make
reference to the artist it is linked
with the album title and
tracklistings. Here some
characteristics of the
singer/songwriter genre are
expressed, the use of the colours
connotes that he is trying to
express heartbreak and romance in
his work. From previous research I
found that singing about romance
and heartbreak is associated with
this genre.
4. The positioning of
Goyte’s name and album
title are very subtle, with
Gotye’s name being
positioned in the bottom
right corner in small red
ink style writing. There we
could connote this is a
link to the album title -
Like Drawing Blood
The only place the album
title is placed is on the
spine of the case in a
beige/ cream colour,
which has been
contrasting with the red
blood colour on all of the
artwork.
5. The way that Gotye has used a blood stained pattern instead of a
photo of himself. Although this is different for the genre, the colours
which have been used are drab, from these colours we connote that
they are trying to express heartbreak and upsetting themes in his
songs.
