One of Brisbane's most treasured attractions. The Story Bridge is more than just a massive
structure utilized for everyday transportation. The bridge is abounding in heritage and interesting
history that adds to its magnificence. In embarking on a climb, you will be exposed to a whole new
way of viewing Brisbane as well as good to know facts and trivia about the bridge itself.
The bridge opened for use on July 6, 1940. It took fourteen years after the initial proposal to start
construction, and five years after the start of construction before it was in full operation. At the time
of the Great Depression, construction of the bridge provided much needed employment for
citizens.
The Consulting Engineer for the Story Bridge was Dr. John Bradfield with a design team that
worked on 600 drawings for the bridge's design. It was constructed by Evans Deakin-Hornibrook
Constructions Limited on April 30, 1935. The first sod was turned by Premier of Queensland,
William Forgan Smith which marked the start of construction. That day was May 24, 1935.
The Story Bridge had another name prior to its completion and opening. The bridge was originally
named the Jubilee Bridge in honour of King George V. On July 6, 1940 it was opened by Sir Leslie
Orme Wilson, then Governor of Queensland, and named after John Douglas Story, who was a
senior and influential public servant. Story rallied strongly for the bridge's construction, which
subsequently became one of his many advocacies.
The construction of the bridge was synchronized from both ends, where main piers were primarily
set up. The bridge's construction also makes a mark in history as the deepest airlock work in
Australia at that time, the excavations for the south pier required men to work in watertight airlock
chambers in steel caissons as deep as 40 metres below ground level.
The Story Bridge is one of Queensland's engineering achievements, and it was only until 1942
that the bridge was fully utilized when the American Troops arrived. The bridge was operated with
toll fees at that time and continued until its turn over to the Brisbane City Council 1947.
The cost of the Story Bridge construction amounted to 1.6 million pounds. It took 7 years for the
construction cost to be recovered.
