Life in Grade 6 – Life in Middle School
Grade 5 Information Evening, 1 June 2015
The Homeroom Teacher
…assumes primary responsibility for communicating with all parties
concerned about issues related to student development, including social
/ interpersonal skills, and academic performance.
…supports students in the process of acquiring values, attitudes and
behaviour in line with the Learner Profile / MYP ideals and the school
philosophy
…assists students in the development of appropriate Approaches to
Learning skills, particularly organization and time management
…meets students each morning and keeps the register
…follows up on unexplained absences and persistent lateness

 Language and Literature: English & German
 Language Acquisition: English, French, Spanish, German
 EAL
 In addition: 1 period of advisory & 1 Study Hall per week
Various (grades, snack, lunch, breaks…)
MYP grading is used, IB grades in years 6-12 range from 1 –
7
Students are usually expected to be outside during morning
break, food is eaten outside
Lunchtime: 1st
half of lunch is spent in the cafeteria (please
provide food or pre-order lunch), 2nd
half of lunch outside
Caring about your child - Pastoral Care
weekly advisory lesson with homeroom teacher, focusing on
pastoral care (pastoral programme)
regular assemblies
Field trips & activities
additional support provided by school psychologist and SAP
team.
Student-Parent-Teacher conferences
Lines of Communication / Reports
The subject teacher and the homeroom teacher are the first
port of call.
Only get in touch with the Head of Department or the Principal
after having spoken to the teacher directly concerned
Speak to the MYP coordinator regarding programme enquiries
Channels to use for communication: E-Mail, student planner,
telephone conversations & personal appointments
Full reports are issued at the end of each semester
Parent Teacher Conferences take place once in each semester
Timetable, Dates & School Day
 School day (Mo-Fr): registration takes place in the homeroom at 8.10
every morning. The registration period ends at 8.20. Arrivals after 8.20
are recorded as late. The school day ends at 3.30.
 The Middle School timetable is a two week timetable, alternating
between so-called blue and white weeks. These are clearly marked in
the calendar.
 Calendars and individual timetables will be handed out on the first day
of school (27 August)
 27 & 28 August: all of Middle School off timetable
 9 September 2015: Meet The Teachers
 Detailed information for the new school year, class lists and supplies
lists will be sent out during the summer break.
