Ambient intelligence (AmI) is the smart environments that the IoT (Internet of Things) devices supportpeople in
carrying out their everyday life activities. AmI provides personalized, adaptive, autonomous, context aware, space
and time aware, and anticipatory services in many IoT applications (Fordetails regarding AmI, please see the
Wikipedia article).
Washington State University patent application US20150057808 illustrates AmI for smart home applications. The
smart home AmI discovers and recognizes patterns in resident behavior and generates adaptive automation rules
for controlling the IoT devices based on the patterns. The smart home AmI is equipped with motion sensors on the
ceiling. In addition, sensors are installed to provide ambient temperature readings and readings for hot water, cold
water, and stove burner use. Contact switch sensors monitored the open/closed status of doors and cabinets, and
pressure sensors monitored usage of key items such as the medicine container, cooking phone, and phone book.
Sensor data are captured using a sensornetwork and stored in a database and processedin the remote server.

As illustrated in US20150039105, the smart home AmI can also be equipped with identification sensorand a real-
time locating system. The identification sensor detects the presence of a home member and identifies the home
member. The real-time locating system automatically identifies and track location of the home member in real time
within the house. The smart home AmI sets the preferred control parameters based on the identification and
location information and directs the home appliances to operate with the set of preferred control parameters for the
detected home member exploiting the machine learning.

KAIST patent application US20150230167 illustrates AmI for smart office building applications. For example, as a
personarrives in front of the building, the person receives, by the smart phone of the person, a welcoming message
of an access information service of the building. If the person responds to such welcoming message, reservation
information that has been prearranged through the calendar service can be notified to the smart phone of the person.
The personthen moves on to the reserved conference room by being provided with a Wi-Fi signal based location
guidance through the smart phone of the person. When the person enters the reserved conference room, lights and
lamps installed in the conference room can be automatically turned on, and operation of a ventilation system can be
initiated. Thereafter, the projector can be turned on, blinders of the conference room windows can be shut, and the
lights can be turned off automatically.
Wipro patent application US20140108307 illustrates AmI for connected cars applications. Base on the profile and
contextual information, AmI provides suggestions to the driver exploiting machine learning. For example, AmI
obtains contextual information indicating that a contactof the driver is only a few minutes in driving time from the
driver’s route. Further, based on social communications and social media information stored in the driver profile,
AmI can also determine that the contact is a friend of the user. Based on that determination, AmI informs the driver,
"Your friend Peter is at a few minutes away from your route; would you like meet?"
The connected cars AmI can also determine that a venue located at a geographic location and frequently visited by
the driver in the past as illustrates in Apple patent application US20150237470. Using past behavior patterns and a

current location, the connected cars AmI can determine a condition to trigger execution of an application program
or display of certain content. The condition can be personalized to match a life style of the driver. For example, on
the way to nearby shopping mall, the driver hears a voice massage that the driver needs to exit at the next to buy
milk. The onboard screen shows a map for nearby shops with milk price if a shop is on sale.
ETRI patent application US20130054090 illustrates the connected cars AmI for safe and convenient driving
services. The connected cars AmI automatically cognizes the emotion of a driver and passenger and the condition
of a vehicle. Then, the connected cars AmI provides the safe driving control and service based on cognized
information.
