M2M (Machine to Machine) communication or MTC (Machine Type Communication) technologies are the key
enablers for emerging IoT connectivity. Recently several telecom operators are deploying LTE based M2M (LTE-

applications and issued patents in the USPTO as of 4Q 2015 that are related to the smart home applications are
reviewed. More than 400 patent applications are selected. As shown in the figure, the key indented IoT innovation
players are Samsung Electronics, Google (Nest Labs), General Electric, LG Electronics, Allure Energy, Honeywell,
Ecofactor, ABL IP Holding LLC, Echostar Technologies, Philips, Qualcomm, and Apple.
In number of patent applications, Samsung Electronics and Google (including Nest Labs) dominate the patent
applications. Samsung Electronics patent applications are highly focused on the home automation and security to
supportits current Samsung SmartThings business. Samsung SmartThings is the first fully integrated smart home
system for providing the home automation and safety services to make people’s daily lives easier, more
