2. ‘Hannah Montana 2: <Meet Miley
Cyrus
Miley Cyrus first album was a double
album released in 2007 'Hannah
Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus'. The
cover of the album for 'Meet Miley
Cyrus' shows her as her real 14 year
old self. She is wearing typical clothes
that a 14 year old at that time would
do with a pink t-shirt and a necklace.
This connotes that she is young and
innocent and that her music is a
reflection of this. The pink colour of
the text on the album cover fits with
the colour scheme of girly and young
which helps to advertise what the
target audience is for that particular
album.
3. Breakout
Her second album 'Break out' was
released the year after when she was
15 and that differences between the
two cover it is quite a lot considering
the fact that it was only brought out a
year after the first. As you can see
when the two albums are next to each
other, it is clear to see that she has had
more work done on her appearance
with her hair and outfit which looks
more grown up for her 15 year old self.
She is still portrayed as a young girl
though, innocent shown by her pose
and clothes that are typical day to day
clothes girls her age at the time. She is
also smiling in both of the top album
covers which connotes that she is
simply having a good time.
4. Can’t Be Tamed
On the 3rd album cover, she has
started to become more grown up
with her expression and costume
by the fact that her stomach is on
show and the top is low-cut. She
looks more serious too and the
black clothes she is wearing
connote that she is more
sophisticated and relate to the
title of the album 'Can't Be
Tamed' which connotes that she is
'bad' as no one can tame her and
she is no longer the sweet and
innocent girl she used to be.
5. Bangerz
Her final and most recent album
'Bangerz' was released in 2013 after
her most dramatic change from her
former Hannah Montana self. She is
now known to be a "sexual object" in
the eyes of the audience due to what
she’s recently been doing that has
been reported in the news. The image
on the front of the album reflects this
new image that has been created by
her body language.
Biting her lip/finger, is a gesture that is
seen as a sexual gesture as she is
drawing attention to her mouth. The
fact that she is only wearing a jacket
shows that she isn't wearing other
clothes and this all adds to the new
image of her being a sexual object
rather than a teenage girl making
music.
6. Laura Mulvey - Theorist
Theorist Laura Mulvey who was a
feminist, introduced the concept of the
male gaze which is the way that men see
women. They are seen as objects rather
than actual people and are there to
please men, which is voyeurism.
However, the female gaze is the same as
the male gaze as women view women
through the eyes of men and they are
portrayed as how men think that they
should be. In relation to the 'Bangerz'
album cover, the image of Miley shows
her in a way that is appealing to men
through her costume and her
body language. If she was dressed in the
same outfit as in the picture of her on
her first album, then the audience would
have different views of her and she
wouldn't appeal as much to the male
audience.
