3. INTRODUCTION
• Locomotives in india consist of electric and diesel
locomotives. Locomotives are also called locos or engines.
• An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity
from overhead lines, an on-board energy storage device such as a
chemical battery or fuel cell.
• Electricity is used to eliminate smoke and take advantage of the high
efficiency of electric motors.

4. HISTORY
• The country's first railway, built by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR),
opened in 1853, between Bombay and Thane.
• A British engineer, Robert Maitland Brereton, was responsible for the
expansion of the railways from 1857 onwards.

5. HISTORY
The Allahabad-Jabalpur branch line of the East Indian
Railway had been opened in June 1867. Brereton was
responsible for linking this with the GIPR, resulting in
a combined network of 6,400 km .

6. OVERVIEW OF DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE
• Early internal combustion engine-powered
locomotives and railmotors used gasoline as their
fuel. Soon after Dr. Rudolf Diesel patented his first
compression ignition engine[1] in 1892, it was
considered for railway propulsion
• his engine design was successfully applied to marine
propulsion and stationary applications.
• The locomotive weight was 95 tonnes and the power
was 883 kW with a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

A DIESEL ENGINE SPEED IS MONITORED AND
CONTROLLED THROUGH A GOVERNOR.
THE GOVERNOR ENSURES THAT THE ENGINE
SPEED STAYS HIGH ENOUGH TO IDLE AT THE
RIGHT SPEED AND THAT THE ENGINE SPEED WILL
NOT RISE TOO HIGH WHEN FULL POWER IS
DEMANDED.
THE GOVERNOR IS A SIMPLE MECHANICAL
DEVICE WHICH FIRST APPEARED ON STEAM
ENGINES.
IT OPERATES ON A DIESEL ENGINE AS SHOWN IN
THE DIAGRAM BELOW.
THE GOVERNOR CONSISTS OF A ROTATING
SHAFT, WHICH IS DRIVEN BY THE DIESEL ENGINE.
GOVERNER
11. 11
A pair of flyweights are linked to the
shaft and they rotate as it rotates.
The centrifugal force caused by the
rotation causes the weights to be
thrown outwards as the speed of the
shaft rises.
If the speed falls the weights move
inwards.
The flyweights are linked to a collar
fitted around the shaft by a pair of
arms.
As the weights move out, so the
collar rises on the shaft.
If the weights move inwards, the collar
moves down the shaft.
The movement of the collar is used to
operate the fuel rack lever controlling
the amount of fuel supplied to the
engine by the injectors.
WORKING OF CENTRIFUGAL GOVERNERS
12. 12
Woodward Governor – Engine
speed is mechanically
controlled by centrifugal
governor.
Governor receives analog input
signals from controller.
Speed Sensor – Magnetic
sensor that supplies
information to the Woodward
controller.
Woodward 2301A Controller –
Receives signals from speed
sensor and transmits signals to
governor and external
customer supplied switch
boards.
WOODWARD UNIVERSAL GOVERNER
13. 13
Woodward’s UG “universal” governors are mechanical-
hydraulic governors for controlling diesel, gas, or dual
fuel engines, or steam turbines.
This proven design has been an industry standard for
many years and worldwide acceptance provides easy
service in most engine and governor shops.
UG governors have their own self-contained oil supply
and are driven by a suitable UG drive from an engine or
turbine.
They operate either isochronously or in droop, and have a
wide variety of optional features for use in generator,
pump, marine propulsion, and other applications.
UG governors have a maximum drive speed of 1500 to
1600 rpm.
14. CONCLUSION
Main Objective was to learn GOVERNERS in diesel locomotive In
Railways.
I am thankful to the supporting people of the Tuglakabad.
GOVERNERS are used to control the speed of the engine as per
variation of load .
