This introduction was given at the International Humanitarian Technology Conference. http://ihtc.ieee.ca/ . This workshop session was run with Samuel Paul Alce and Pierre Beland of HOT OSM. Summary: Since the Haiti earthquake in 2010, new partners support the UN Agencies and International organizations through the Web 2.0 or Collaborative Web. OpenStreetMap is one of these community of volunteers. It has shown on several occasions its ability to mobilize hundreds of contributors and support remotely, providing maps and services necessary for such actions. The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) makes the bridge with the humanitarian organizations. In this session, we will discuss open source methods for humanitarian technology. The workshop will include an overview of Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team’s (HOT) activities, some of the tools and best practices. We will include stories of activations around the world from Indonesia to Haiti to Philippines and the DRC. Our session also includes hands on training from HOT community leaders. Quantum GIS (QGIS) is an open-source, highly customizable geospatial application that's great for data exploration, manipulation, and cartographic preparation -- in other words, it's software that allows you to make detailed, aesthetically-pleasing maps for free! QGIS is also *extremely* script-able with Python, and integrates with a large number of database and analysis backends (GRASS, R, PostGIS, etc.). In this talk, Paige Bailey will be giving a short overview of QGIS; detailing a few mapping case studies; then showing how to leverage additional functionality by writing custom Python plugins.

It’s easy to find and create data. But what are you going to do with it? Can I ask the world complex questions such as what’s the local crime rate, distance to metro, or rating of my local school? Can you combine these all together to rate houses you may want to buy? And how do you then connect back to your government and local businesses to engage in collaborative decision making. This talk with discuss how you should consider users and their personal interactions with data and information. We’ll also peel back the covers on how open source tools such as HBase, Cascading, Geos and Polymaps handle analyzing and streaming realtime data to maps and visualizations both on the web and to mobile devices. To illustrate what’s possible, we’ll dive through GeoCommons, a large online community of data sharing and community analytics that uses open source mapping visualization, Hadoop analysis, and mobile interfaces to provide this to the world. Users can even build and socialize their own analysis methods to share their expert knowledge with other users. We’ll also review how global organizations like the World Bank and United Nations are using these tools to connect with citizens in developing countries to empower them to make decisions on building investment and understanding how climate science may affect their areas.

The communication of advances in research to the common public for both education and decision making is an important aspect of scientific work. An even more crucial task is to gain recognition within the scientific community, which is judged by impact factor and citation counts. Recently, the latter concepts have been extended from textual publications to include data and software publications. This paper presents a case study for science communication and data citation. For this, tectonic models, Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), best practices for data citation and a multimedia online-portal for scientific content are combined. This approach creates mutual benefits for the stakeholders: Target audiences receive information on the latest research results, while the use of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) increases the recognition and citation of underlying scientific data. This creates favourable conditions for every researcher as DOI names ensure citeability and long term availability of scientific research. In the developed application, the FOSS tool for tectonic modelling GPlates is used to visualise and manipulate plate-tectonic reconstructions and associated data through geological time. These capabilities are augmented by the Science on a Halfsphere project (SoaH) with a robust and intuitive visualisation hardware environment. The tectonic models used for science communication are provided by the AGH University of Science and Technology. They focus on the Silurian to Early Carboniferous evolution of Central Europe (Bohemian Massif) and were interpreted for the area of the Geopark Bergstraße Odenwald based on the GPlates/SoaH hardware- and software stack. As scientific story-telling is volatile by nature, recordings are a natural means of preservation for further use, reference and analysis. For this, the upcoming portal for audiovisual media of the German National Library of Science and Technology TIB is expected to become a critical service infrastructure. It allows complex search queries, including metadata such as DOI and media fragment identifiers (MFI), thereby linking data citation and science communication.

What is digital sustainability and what do open source communities have to do with it? The talk will introduce the concept of digital sustainability, discuss characteristics of digital resources that make them sustainable, and explain why and how communities of open source communities create digitally sustainable software. Examples of different community activities such as the LibreOffice project illustrate how collaboration works in various open source initiatives. Born 1980, Matthias studied business administration and computer science at University of Bern until 2005 (lic.rer.pol) and finished his doctoral dissertation at the Chair of Strategic Management and Innovation at ETH Zürich in 2009 (Dr. sc. ETH Zürich). His research focused on open source communities and firm involvement, the title of his PhD thesis was "How Firms Make Friends: Communities in Private-Collective Innovation". During his studies, Matthias founded two Internet start-ups and was involved in various open source initiatives. After finishing his PhD he then worked at Liip AG, a Swiss software company creating agile Internet solutions based on open source technologies. In 2010 he joined EY (Ernst & Young) as Senior, later he was promoted to Manager. Among other topics Matthias Stürmer consulted global corporations and government authorities on social media governance, open source software, and open government data. He is member of the board of Swiss Open System User Group /ch/open, member of the board of Opendata.ch, secretary of the Swiss Parliamentarian Group for Digital Sustainability, and leader of the OSB Alliance Working Group Office Interoperability. Since 2011 he is member of the city parliament of Bern. In August 2013 Matthias started as post-doc at the University of Bern to focus on topics around digital sustainability. Among other projects he created the new lecture “Open data: data management and visualization” teaching open government data theory as well as tutoring the programming of open data apps by the students.

A public lecture I gave to first-year journalism students at the Oslo and Akershus University  College of Applied Sciences in Norway. The focus of the lecture was on tips and practices. Please also mind the sources on the last slide. They provide excellent further information. # Longer Introduction On Twitter every now and then a celebrity is declared dead. Very often this is just a hoax: For instance, Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington have had a mysterious deadly snowboarding accident. And when North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il died, the rapper Lil Kim became a trending topic as many hip hop fans simply got confused due their similar names. Rumours, hoaxes and wrong information have been everyday phenomena in the news business. With social media some things have changed: User generated content has become a new source for journalists and now news spread and modify faster than ever. Journalists have to adapt to these new conditions. Last week I gave a lecture to first-year journalism students in Oslo. In the talk I put the phenomenon of rumours in social media into context and gave the students some tips on how to use the means they have available to check facts. The last slide contains links to a excellent blog posts and papers that contribute to the topic. Elsebeth Frey at Oslo and Akershus University  College of Applied Sciences was so kind to give me the opportunity to speak in her class about fact checking.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
